Jung stuns Sandgren as Anderson moves on
Top seed Alexander Bublik out-aced and outlasted Ivo Karlovic to kick off his Hall of Fame Open campaign with a 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-1 victory on Wednesday.
In his first match as a tournament’s first seed in his career, 2019 finalist Bublik withstood 21 aces from the big-serving Karlovic, who lifted the Newport trophy in 2016. He broke serve twice and served up 22 aces of his own en route to the quarter-finals.
“Ivo is a great player and there is not much to say about this match other than it was server versus server,” Bublik said. “In the first set, I got a bit lucky and he gave me two double faults, in the second set I gave him [four] and he gave up five in the third. I’m happy to get through and I’m happy to be in the quarter-finals.”

The No. 37 player in the FedEx ATP Rankings reached his first tour-level final two years ago here in Newport. Bublik looked as comfortable as ever on the stadium court, going toe-to-toe with the 6’11” Karlovic through a tightly contested, 50-minute opening set.
The 42-year-old fought off two break points to take them into a tie-break but, under pressure from Bublik, he surrendered the first set with just his second double fault of the match. Karlovic brushed it off in the second set, and won 94 per cent (15/16) of points behind his big first serve to level the score.
But Bublik, who kept Karlovic on his toes throughout the contest with his variety and signature underarm serves, raised his level in the decider. He only dropped one point behind his serve, and reeled off the last five games of the match before sealing the victory with his 22nd ace.
How To Watch
Through to his fifth quarter-final of the season, Bublik will next face Chinese Taipei’s Jason Jung, who stunned fifth seed Tennys Sandgren in a 6-2, 6-2 rout. Jung saved all six of the break points he faced and won 82 per cent (32/39) of points behind his first serve to advance.
Seventh seed Jordan Thompson and eighth seed Kevin Anderson also made their way into the Newport quarter-finals in straight sets. Thompson raced past Yuichi Sugita at the expense of just two games, 6-0, 6-2. He will next face Maxime Cressy, who is contesting his first ATP Tour main draw on grass this week. The American stunned second seed Sam Querrey 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 and fired 16 aces en route to victory.
Anderson took down Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner in a close contest, needing an hour and 33 minutes to secure a 7-5, 7-6(3) victory. Anderson served up 18 aces and did not face a break point as he won 94 per cent (31/33) of points behind his first serve. He will next face Jack Sock, who toppled third seed Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 6-3 in his first tour-level main draw since last year's Roland Garros.

South African ends Sock’s comeback run to reach SF
Eighth seed Kevin Anderson rallied from a set down against the resurgent Jack Sock on Thursday to reach his first semi-final of the year at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport.
Former World No. 5 Anderson fired 20 aces and won 88 per cent (42/48) of his first serve points as he fought his way into a tour-level semi-final for the first time since Vienna last October (ret. vs. Rublev).
“I was up against a really, really good player. Jack has had a couple of tough years, but his level is way above his ranking,” Anderson said. “I really had to dig deep, it was a very physical match and conditions were much warmer today. I thought I did a good job, battling hard and fighting for every point. Fortunately, I was able to figure out a way to come through in the end.”

Sock, who was contesting his first tour-level quarter-final since 2018 in Paris-Bercy, grabbed the first set after saving a set point. Sock and Anderson traded service breaks early on, and they stayed level as the South African applied the scoreline pressure. Sock outlasted Anderson from the baseline at 5-4 to send them into a tie-break, where he claimed the set after Anderson netted a backhand.
Anderson raised his level in the second set, using his booming serve to great effect as he kept the points short and looked for serve-and-volley winners. The eighth seed won five of the first six games to race out to a double break lead. In the third set, he attacked his opponent’s second serve, winning 12 of 14 points behind Sock’s second delivery. After breaking to love at 4-3, Anderson served out the victory in two hours and 35 minutes.
How To Watch
He will next face Alexander Bublik for the first time, after the top seed raced past Jason Jung to win 6-2, 6-4 in 76 minutes.
Bublik is into his third semi-final of the year after amassing a personal-best 26 wins on the season. The Kazakh player saved the only break point he faced and won 85 per cent (22/26) of first serve points en route to victory, which he sealed with his 14th ace of the match.
“There are a lot of positives: staying confident throughout the entire match, and staying focused against such a tricky opponent. He runs around a lot and plays very solid," Bublik said. "I tried to keep my nerves together and served well, which definitely helps.”
Bublik, who reached his first ATP Tour final here in Newport in 2019, is seeking his first tour-level title after starting the year with a run to the championship match in Antalya (l. to De Minaur).

Learn about the Kazakhstani's life off the court
Alexander Bublik is one of the most entertaining players on the ATP Tour, from his shotmaking ability to his underarm serves. Although fans might remember the Kazakhstani’s trickery most, he has more aces than anyone so far with 576 entering this week’s Citi Open.
“It’s a cool stat. Leading in aces after almost eight months is great,” Bublik said. “It means I can serve. It means I can hit dingers.”
Before the ninth seed begins his run in Washington, ATPTour.com caught up with Bublik about what his life is like on Tour, his favourite vacation spots, and why he tries to focus on anything but tennis once off the court.

What are two essential non-tennis items you always pack for trips?
It’s my wedding ring and my watch. I buy and sell. I bought my first [watch] in 2017. Since then I’ve had many. I’m a big watch enthusiast. I love watches, I love buying them and selling them. I love all these kinds of things. At the moment I have maybe four or five watches, but I’ve had many more.
Do you enjoy travelling the world or consider it just something that needs to be done to be a pro tennis player? If you do enjoy it, what do you enjoy about travelling?
I don’t like travelling at all to be honest with you. I’m not a big fan of packing, flying and changing time zones, but I treat it like a part of work. I don’t like it. I was happy to stay home for six months. I was very happy, it was really good for me. I would stay another six months at home if that would be necessary. For me travelling is just a part of my job to make a living.
How do you try to overcome jetlag and acclimate to the local time zone?
It’s not tough for me. I do well for the time zones, but I just don’t like travelling. I would be happy to travel from my home to the Alps and back with the car, five or six hours. I’m not a guy who would go to the Maldives, a 15-hour-trip to lay under the sun for 15 days.
In that case, where is your favourite vacation destination?
The French Alps, Swiss Alps, ski resorts. Something that is not mainstream and you don’t see hundreds of tennis players and athletes there. Something that is a bit interesting to walk around, see nature.
I go to the mountains, I enjoy nature. Of course there is a great hotel, but walking around. I can’t ski or snowboard unfortunately, but I love nature. It’s great to recharge, put away your phone. I think for me the best places are these cold resorts with skiing or in the Swiss Alps.
Watch Bublik Tour The Newport Grounds:
What is your favourite tournament city to visit and why?
The ATP hosts the tournaments in very good locations, so usually it’s always in good cities. There are some cities I don’t like [because of] the weather or conditions or other things, but overall 95 per cent of tournaments held by the ATP are held in great spots. We have great hotels [too].
As a tennis player, maintaining your body is of the utmost importance, so how do you take care of it during long trips?
Sleep well, and a couple of glasses of wine never hurt. I try not to stick to the tennis player thing, always taking care of yourself, taking care of your body, taking care of your tennis. When you travel, you should try to be a normal person and do whatever a normal person would do on a 14-hour flight.
Are there any routines or activities you do to create a sense of ‘home on the road’ to feel more comfortable?
I travel with my wife, my coach — who is my good friend — and a fitness trainer and we try not to talk about tennis. We try not to think about tennis at all when we are outside the tennis courts. Just live a normal life.
I don’t treat myself as a tennis player when I am outside. I probably should in order to perform better as they say. But for me, the most important thing is to feel happy and feel comfortable on the Tour. I try to put aside the tennis life when I am away from the tennis courts.
