Frenchman leads Kohlschreiber 15-2 in their ATPHead2Head Series
Third seed Gael Monfils continued his dominant record over Philipp Kohlschreiber on Thursday, defeating the lucky loser 7-6(2), 6-4 at the Moselle Open to reach his second tour-level quarter-final of the season.
The Frenchman, who defeated Kohlschreiber in the 2009 final in Metz, was strong behind his first serve, winning 83 per cent (39/47) of points on his first delivery to advance after one hour and 33 minutes.
“It felt great," Monfils said. "It is always good to come back at home in France. I felt like I had a good performance and Philipp played quite well. It took a bit of time to adapt and then at the end it was a little bit cat and mouse with the serve. I am glad I won it in straight sets.”

Monfils now leads Kohlschreiber 15-2 in their ATPHead2Head Series, winning the past seven meetings between the pair, a run that stretches back to 2013. The World No. 20 will next face eighth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili or Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
On his record against Kohlschreiber, Monfils said: “I feel lucky. I get through with a bit more luck than Philipp. It is not easy matches, maybe a couple, but most of those [matches] are pretty tight like tonight.”
The 35-year-old overcame Australian Alex de Minaur in Cincinnati to earn his 500th tour-level victory. One week earlier, he reached the quarter-finals in Toronto. The 10-time tour-level titlist is aiming to win his first ATP Tour trophy since he triumphed in Rotterdam in 2020.
Kohlschreiber, who moved past Marco Cecchinato in the first round, was aiming to reach his second tour-level quarter-final of the season, having enjoyed a run to the last eight on home soil in Halle.

Second seed next faces Giron
Second seed Gael Monfils cruised past Italy’s Gianluca Mager 6-2, 6-2 on Friday at the Sofia Open to reach his second ATP Tour semi-final in as many weeks.
The Frenchman, who enjoyed a run to the last four in Metz last week, was competing in his maiden match in Sofia this year after receiving a first-round bye and then a walkover from Winston-Salem champion Ilya Ivashka.
“I like to be here,” Monfils said in his on-court interview. “The city is great. The people organising the tournament are always amazing. I have had a very good time with good preparation and that is why I think I played very well today.”

The 35-year-old fired 13 aces and mixed his aggressive baseline tennis with great variety against Mager to advance after 50 minutes. Monfils will next face Marcos Giron after the American defeated eighth seed John Millman 6-4, 6-2 to reach his first tour-level semi-final.
“Nothing is easy,” Monfils added. “We have been putting in work for nearly four days here. Working on my serve and my forehand and it worked perfectly today. I will be ready for Marcos. He has been playing very well, so I think it will be a tough semi-final.”

Monfils has fond memories in Bulgaria, having reached the semi-finals in Sofia in 2019. Earlier this season, the World No. 20 advanced to the last eight in Toronto, before reaching the third round at the US Open.
Mager, currently No. 78 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, was aiming to reach his second tour-level semi-final and first since 2020, when he defeated Attila Balazs before losing to Cristian Garin in the championship match in Rio de Janeiro.

Second seed Gael Monfils is an ATP Tour finalist once again after he overcame American Marcos Giron 7-5, 6-0 on Saturday at the Sofia Open.
The Frenchman struck his groundstrokes with great power as he found his range as the match went on. The World No. 20 rallied from 2-4 down in the first set, winning 11 of the next 12 games to advance after 65 minutes.
With his victory, it is the 17th straight year Monfils has reached a tour-level final. His last championship match came in Rotterdam in February 2020, when he defeated #NextGenATP Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime for his 10th tour-level crown.

The 35-year-old, who enjoyed a run to the semi-finals on home soil in Metz last week, will face either #NextGenATP Italian Jannik Sinner or fifth-seeded Serbian Filip Krajinovic in the final.
In a lively first set, Giron started well as he hit with consistent depth which forced Monfils to drop the ball short. However, from 4-2 ahead, Monfils began to pin Giron behind the baseline as he used a greater variety of shots to dictate.
The World No. 20 reeled off five of the last six games in the opener to lead, before he continued to close the net in the second set as he raced clear against a disheartened Giron to secure his victory.
Giron was competing in his first tour-level semi-final, having upset seeded Australian pair Alex de Minaur and John Millman en route to the last four.
