Sinner got Italy off to a good start when he defeated Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 7-6(3) to give his country a 1-0 lead. The World No. 10 rallied from a break down in the second set to triumph after one hour and 37 minutes.
"It's never easy playing against him, it was the third time already. The first set I was under control. In the second set I dropped a little bit of intensity. He is serving very well, so I was in trouble," Sinner said. "But fortunately I found a way."
Sinner now leads the pair's ATP Head2Head 2-1. Rinderknech defeated his younger opponent last year on clay in Lyon, and appeared primed to push for another upset in Sydney when he broke in the second set.
The Frenchman was playing aggressively and using his big serve to prevent Sinner from dominating from the baseline. But one slip allowed the Italian back on serve, which proved critical.
"Tennis is all about trying to find solutions and today I found it, fortunately," Sinner said. "Obviously we want to win, so we'll try to stay focussed [as a team]."

Sinner Survives Safiullin Scare To Give Italy Lead Over Russia
Spoiler:
Earlier in the No. 2 singles, Sinner fought off three set points in the first set and five break points against the World No. 167 in his first three service games of the second set before the World No. 10’s edge in big-match experience – and ability to save 10 of the 11 break points he faced in the match – carried him to a victory.
“I love to play for Italy and am very early happy to be up 1-0 and now we’ll see how Matteo can do against the No. 2 player in the world,” Sinner said. “It will be a tough challenge for him.
“Every match is tough to win at this level. [Roman] played incredible. I had to play my best tennis in the important moments. I got a little lucky in the first set but that is part of the game.”
Safiullin showed remarkable composure playing in the biggest match of his life. He rallied from being broken in the first game of the match to quickly draw back level at 2-all. Matching Sinner blow for blow in searching baseline exchanges, the 24-year-old earned a set point on Sinner’s serve at 6-5 and two more in the tie-break.
But perhaps the moment did catch up with him when he double faulted on 6/5 in the tie-break and then netted a routine high forehand volley on the next point before Sinner closed out the set with an ace.
In addition to fighting off five break points in his first three services games of the second set, Sinner again turned back a break chance in the final game of the match.

On paper, it looked like a routine win. In reality, Jannik Sinner will be looking to tidy up some glitches ahead of his next match at the Australian Open.
The World No. 11 took down Portugal's Joao Sousa 6-4, 7-5, 6-1. But after giving back breaks in the first and second sets, the Italian won't have been entirely satisfied with the nature of his victory.
“Of course it was not easy for a first round, especially against a player who [has] played three matches before,” Sinner said in his post-match press conference. “Today was also a little bit windy. I tried to get used to the conditions and everything. I think it was a good first round.”
Sinner served for the first set at 5-3 only to be broken and also allowed Sousa back on even terms early in the second set after opening a 2-0 lead, when it looked likely that he was heady for a speedy victory.
In the end, however, the Italian used his fresh, young legs to shut down angles for 32-year-old Sousa to hit into on Melbourne's Park's newest show court, Kia Arena. Sinner hit 31 winners (to Sousa's 14) and also 31 unforced errors.
Sinner, who improved to 4-0 on the year following his three ATP Cup victories, next faces the winner of Steve Johnson and Jordan Thompson. He will attempt to reach the Australian Open third round for the first time in three attempts.

Italian next plays Daniel
Jannik Sinner maintained his perfect start to the season Thursday, cruising past American Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the third round at the Australian Open for the first time.
The 11th seed is making his third appearance in Melbourne and backed up his first-round win against Joao Sousa with a solid display against Johnson, firing 29 winners and breaking five times to advance after one hour and 43 minutes.
”It is a real pleasure playing here,” Sinner said in his on-court interview. “I played on this court against Shapo [Denis Shapovalov] in the first-round last year, so it is a special feeling coming back here. Thanks for staying out. I like playing here in Australia, so having a night match is very special.”

Following his efficient victory, the Italian is now 5-0 on the year, having recorded three ATP Cup wins earlier this month. He will next play Taro Daniel after the Japanese qualifier upset former World No. 1 Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
“I started the match very well, which gave me a lot of confidence,” Sinner added. “When I had to break in every set, I was quite relaxed. I tried to stay focused on my service games which I think I have done. I am very happy to be through in three sets.”
Sinner enjoyed a standout 2021 season, winning four tour-level titles as he rose from No. 37 in the ATP Rankings to a career-high No. 9 in November. The 20-year-old, whose best Grand Slam performance was a run to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros in 2020, now leads Johnson 3-0 in their ATPHead2Head series.
The 2019 Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals champion made a fast start on Margaret Court Arena, racing into a 4-0 lead as Johnson struggled to deal with Sinner’s flat groundstrokes. The 20-year-old, who hugged the baseline throughout to dictate play, closed out the opener on his first set point and then claimed the decisive break in the ninth game of the second set to seize further control.
Sinner continued to exert relentless pressure on Johnson in the third set in a blink-and-you-would miss-it win, committing just five unforced errors in the set to move through.
