David Goffin made his ATP Masters 1000 debut at the 2012 Miami Open presented by Itau and has since reached five semi-finals and one championship match at the level. The Belgian, who will open his Rolex Paris Masters campaign against Norbert Gombos, spoke to ATPTour.com on Sunday about his favourite Masters 1000 memories, the trophy he would most like to lift and the biggest victory he has earned across the nine elite events.

Which ATP Masters 1000 host city is your favourite and why?
It is not an easy question because the Masters 1000 [events] are always super nice tournaments. If I had to pick one, I would have to say Monte Carlo. It is probably the nicest centre court you can see on Tour with the sea. The sun is coming back in Europe and it is the beginning of the clay season, so it is quite nice after Miami to go back to Europe and start to compete there.

Which Masters 1000 would you most like to win?
I would say Indian Wells because, for me, even if it is in the same category as the other ones, it looks a little bit bigger. With the stadium and the facilities, everything just looks a little bit better. It looks big. For me, it is like a fifth Grand Slam.

Do you remember your Masters 1000 debut, when it was and where?
I won my first round before playing Nicolas Almagro [at 2012 Miami]. I was already very happy to be in the main draw for the first time. I was playing well and that year I won the [Le Gosier] Challenger right after and then I played well at Roland Garros. It gave me a lot of confidence there to qualify and win a match in the main draw. I played a great match. Almagro was better, he was playing so well at that moment, but I always had good memories and played well in Miami.

What do you consider to be your best Masters 1000 win?
In Monte Carlo, the win against Novak Djokovic [in 2017] was a great match and had a great atmosphere on a great centre court. I was playing very well and I made a good result. I lost to Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals. Everything was there, so it is one of the greatest memories I have there.

What is your favourite off-court memory at a Masters 1000?
I love playing golf and [Indian Wells] is probably the week I play the most. It is a golf paradise there. Sometimes I try to go and play golf when I am not on the court. I have to go quick after my practice sessions. I take the car and I go to the golf course.

What is your dream match at a Masters 1000 (who would you play & at which tournament)?
It is not easy to say, but I would say Novak in the Indian Wells final. It is the best challenge you can have. He won those tournaments so many times, Indian Wells and Miami. I played him in the semi-finals in Miami [in 2016]. It was a very good match. If it were in the final of Indian Wells, it would be even better to have that challenge. Or it would be Rafa in the final of Monte Carlo.

Toughest match you’ve played at a Masters 1000?
When I played Rafa in the Monte Carlo semi-finals it was just too good. I played Andy Murray when he was playing very well in Shanghai [in 2016]. I felt that it was very tough for me. I have never beaten Novak on hard courts at a Masters 1000. Those ones were the toughest I would say.

Greatest match you’ve ever seen at a Masters 1000 event?
Before it was best-of-five sets in the final… The match between Roger Federer and Rafa in Rome [in 2006]. I don’t know how many hours they played, but [there were] match points saved and, at the end, Rafa won. This is one of the most exciting matches I saw.

What's the toughest part about the Masters 1000 events?
It is the best players in the world. From the first round until the end, you have a tough opponent… You have to be sharp from the start. It is very tough because you have a lot of matches, sometimes six or seven matches in a week. It can be very tough physically, especially when you go to end of the week and it could be Novak, Rafa and Roger from Friday to Sunday. It is very tough and the toughest part is you physically and mentally have to be sharp from the start.

Wraz z zakończeniem sezonu 2020 dobiegła końca współpraca Davida Goffina z Thomasem Johanssonem, który był jego trenerem od lutego 2018 roku. Nowym szkoleniowcem Belga został Germain Gigounon - były rywal i partner deblowy z zawodowych rozgrywek.
31-letni Gigounon jeszcze do niedawna był profesjonalnym graczem. Karierę tenisową zakończył w listopadzie 2018 roku, po czym został trenerem. W ostatnich miesiącach pracował z czołową belgijską deblistką, Ysaline Bonaventure.

Obaj Belgowie w przeszłości występowali w tych samych turniejach. Chociażby w 2014 roku zagrali w challengerze w Poznaniu. Wówczas w deblu odpadli w I rundzie, a w singlu Goffin zdobył tytuł.

Goffin, w listopadzie 2017 roku siódmy gracz rankingu ATP, sezon 2020 zakończył na 15. lokacie w klasyfikacji singlistów. Nie zdobył żadnego tytułu, a jego najlepszy wynik to 1/8 finału wielkoszlemowego US Open.


Belg to kolejny tenisista ze światowej czołówki, który sezon 2021 rozpocznie z nowym trenerem. W ostatnich dniach szkoleniowców zmienili także m.in. Fabio Fognini i Cristian Garin.

No Hard Feelings! Goffin Beats Doubles Partner Herbert, Saves 5 M.P.

Basilashvili battle back in first round

David Goffin got his 2021 ATP Tour campaign off to a memorable start on Thursday at the Antalya Open. The Belgian not only beat his doubles partner this week, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, but did so by saving five match points.

Goffin completed a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory, having saved five match points at 4-5 in the second set. He won nine straight games en route to improving to 6-0 against Herbert in their ATP Head2Head series. Goffin now challenges German qualifier Matthias Bachinger or Nicola Kuhn of Spain.

“It’s always great to start the new year with a tough win, saving match points,” Goffin told ATPTour.com. “It was definitely tricky to play Pierre. I’m happy with the way I played, especially after the beginning. I stayed in the match and believed until the end.”

Italian Andrea Arnaboldi served for the match against sixth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili at 5-4 in the second set, only to see the Georgian begin his comeback. The former World No. 16 completed a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over two hours and two minutes.

Basilashvili now faces local wild card Altug Celikbilek, who recorded his first ATP Tour match win since June 2019 after a hard-fought 7-6(7), 7-5 win over Kacper Zuk of Poland in one hour and 49 minutes. Celikbilek saved four set points in the first set at 2-5, 3-5 and then at 6/7 in the tie-break.

Eighth-seeded Kazakhstani Alexander Bublik produced a strong service performance to get his 2021 campaign off to a winning start with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Salvatore Caruso of Italy in 68 minutes. He awaits the winner of France’s Tristan Lamasine and Egor Gerasimov of Belarus.

Elsewhere, Italy’s Stefano Travaglia got the better of seventh-seeded Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 and now plays Finn Emil Ruusuvuori, who was a 6-3, 7-6(4) winner over Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic.

Goffin’s Title Bid: The World No. 15 will attempt to extend his unbeaten 5-0 ATP Head2Head series record against Herbert in his first-round match. Goffin, who is bidding to earn his first ATP Tour crown since the 2017 Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo, has experience of starting the year well. Dominant David: Goffin Races Past Kuhn In Antalya

Belgian to face Travaglia for semi-final spot

After saving five match points in his opening match of the tournament, David Goffin raised his game on Saturday to charge through to the Antalya Open quarter-finals.

The Belgian needed just 56 minutes to race past Nicola Kuhn of Spain 6-0, 6-2. Goffin, who won the first 10 games of the match, won 91 per cent of his first-serve points (21/23) en route to victory.

Goffin was clinical throughout the second-round match, as he converted each of his five break points to earn his second win of the year. This week, the 30-year-old is aiming to capture his first ATP Tour title since the 2017 Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo.

Goffin will face Stefano Travaglia of Italy in the quarter-finals. The 29-year-old battled past Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland 7-6(5), 6-3 in one hour and 46 minutes.

From 3-6, 4-5 down in his first-round match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, Goffin won 19 games in a row to beat the Frenchman and establish a 6-0, 4-0 lead in his second-round encounter against Kuhn.
