Holger Rune aims to build on his Barcelona title run from last week.
By ATP Staff
Over the next four weeks at the Mutua Madrid Open and the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, the ATP Tour's stars will battle on the European clay for two coveted ATP Masters 1000 titles. In addition to the prestigious trophies and prize money on offer, many players will be keeping a keen eye on their progress in the PIF ATP Live Rankings at both events.
It all adds up on the ATP Tour, and players' point totals in the PIF ATP Rankings at the conclusion of Rome will determine their seeding at Roland Garros, the year's second Grand Slam. As the action heats up, ATPTour.com surveys the lay of the land on the European red clay.
Two crucial cutoffs come at World No. 4 and World No. 8, as the top four seeds avoid playing one another until the semi-finals, while the top eight seeds cannot meet until the quarter-finals. Taylor Fritz enters Madrid at No. 4, with Novak Djokovic within striking distance, while Barcelona champion Holger Rune clings to a narrow lead at No. 8 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, just ahead of a chasing pack.
PIF ATP Live Rankings (as of 22 April)
Player Points
1) Jannik Sinner 9,730
2) Alexander Zverev 7,995
3) Carlos Alcaraz 7,860
4) Taylor Fritz 4,725
5) Novak Djokovic 4,130
6) Jack Draper 3,800
7) Alex de Minaur 3,545
8) Holger Rune 3,440
9) Lorenzo Musetti 3,160
10) Tommy Paul 3,120
11) Daniil Medvedev 3,100
12) Ben Shelton 2980
13) Arthur Fils 2920
Last year at Roland Garros, Rune was seeded 13th and ran into fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev in the fourth round. The German, who eventually came within a set of the title, advanced past Rune in a five-set thriller. In order to be assured of avoiding the likes of World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and Zverev this year in the last 16, the Dane must maintain or improve upon his standing in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
Lorenzo Musetti leads the chasing pack, just 280 points behind Rune, while Tommy Paul and former World No.1 Daniil Medvedev are also well within striking distance.
It All Adds Up
Players outside the Top 10 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings who could still land a top eight seed include former finalists Casper Ruud (No. 14) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 18), as well defending Madrid champion Andrey Rublev (No. 17) — but any such surge would likely require strong results in both Madrid and Rome. Rublev dropped nine spots to No. 17 this week with his points as defending champion dropping off. A successful title defence could be enough to lift him back inside the top eight, depending on other results.
At the top of the PIF ATP Live Rankings, Sinner, Zverev and Alcaraz are in strong position for a top four seed at Roland Garros. But Fritz will be under pressure from three-time Roland Garros champ Djokovic, who has also won Madrid three times and Rome six times. The American leads Djokovic by 595 points entering Madrid.
As ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, Madrid and Rome award 1,000 PIF ATP Rankings points to their respective singles champions. Finalists earn 650 points, while semi-finalists earn 400.
Stay tuned to the PIF ATP Live Rankings over the next four weeks for up-to-the-minute updates on the battle for Roland Garros seeds.

Casper Ruud has climbed to No. 7 in the PIF ATP Rankings following his title run in Madrid.
By ATP Staff
There has been significant movement in the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings following the Mutua Madrid Open, where Casper Ruud claimed his maiden ATP Masters 1000 crown.
Ruud, finalist Jack Draper and semi-finalist Lorenzo Musetti have all climbed upwards following their performances in the Spanish capital. ATPTour.com looks at the movers in the PIF ATP Rankings as of Monday, 5 May.
It All Adds Up
No. 7 Casper Ruud, +8
Ruud’s title run at the Caja Magica earned the Norwegian a double prize. As well as claiming his maiden Masters 1000 trophy, the 26-year-old also secured his return to the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings after just two weeks away. Ruud, who overcame Jack Draper in a hard-fought final in Madrid, has risen eight spots to No. 7. He will next aim to build on his points tally at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, where he lost his opening match a year ago.
No. 5 Jack Draper, +1 (Career High)
Draper charged to his maiden tour-level championship match on clay without dropping a set in Madrid. Although Ruud proved too strong in the title match, the 23-year-old Briton can reflect on another breakthrough moment in his young career. Draper downed Italian trio Matteo Berrettini, Matteo Arnaldi and Musetti in Spain, as well as World No. 12 Tommy Paul, and he has now leapfrogged Novak Djokovic to a career-high World No. 5.
No. 9 Lorenzo Musetti, +2 (Career High)
Musetti’s semi-final showing was enough to secure a career high of his own. The Italian backed up his run to the final in Monte-Carlo by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex de Minaur en route to the last four in Madrid. Now 16-6 for the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, Musetti has jumped two spots to become a Top 10 player for the first time.

No. 18 Francisco Cerundolo, +3 (Career High)
Cerundolo made it back-to-back semi-finals on European clay courts in Madrid. Arriving in Spain after a tight Munich last-four defeat to Ben Shelton, the Argentine reeled off three straight-sets victories, including against top seed and two-time Madrid champion Alexander Zverev in the fourth-round, before outlasting in-form #NextGenATP star Jakub Mensik in the quarter-finals. The 26-year-old Cerundolo has risen three spots to a career-high No. 18.
No. 54 Gabriel Diallo, +24 (Career High)
Big-serving Canadian Diallo enjoyed a breakout run in Madrid, where he reached his maiden Masters 1000 quarter-final as a lucky loser. The 23-year-old defeated Zizou Bergs, Kamil Majchrzak, Cameron Norrie and Grigor Dimitrov in the main draw before falling to Musetti. Diallo has propelled himself 24 spots in the PIF ATP Rankings with his exploits at the Caja Magica.
