Q. The obvious question: People always talk about your showmanship and say if the guy buckled down and played the way he can, he'd do even better. Seemed like you were really down to business today.

GAEL MONFILS: Yeah, I think I played good. I'm in better position today. It's easy to say, but, you know, I think every time I'm the same. So I will say I'm a bit more lucky than I was maybe sometime in the past. I think I haven't changed a lot, to be honest. I haven't changed a lot. I just play maybe solid today, but I'm still the same.

Q. What does this victory mean to you?

GAEL MONFILS: For me, it's mean I'm happy to be back in quarterfinal in a slam. That's it.

Q. You mentioned that you're doing some of the same things, maybe doing them a little bit better. How have you lifted your game, do you think?

GAEL MONFILS: Well, to put me in quarterfinal, I guess. I think I always play good, always played solid. You know, sometime just didn't happen, you know. I remember here played a good fourth round against Rafa, but he just was better than me. You know, I always have tough battle here or at the French. For me, I'm just happy because today I was a bit lucky. It's one point, it's two points, and today I think I was able to have more luck than him.

Q. Going back to the quarterfinals, first time since 2010. How good does it feel going back? Can you draw on that experience? You haven't lost a set. Just talk about your confidence going into the quarterfinal.

GAEL MONFILS: Well, I'm happy I think because I played good. I think I played solid. I think I hit better the ball day after day; served better. I keep like simple thing in my head, so obviously is working. Then it's luck. To be honest, look at set point. I hit one of the worst dropshots I ever hit and he hit a frame (smiling). It's pure luck, you know, to haven't drop a set. So you need to have it sometime, and I hope I will have more.

Q. Everybody is making such a big deal out of the fact you don't have a coach. Is it easier for you to focus without having someone else talking to you?

GAEL MONFILS: You know, it's been a year and a half, so I just manage to don't have anyone. For sure it's better to have a coach. I won't lie to you. It's better to have someone to help you. I need it, you know. But as I say all the time, it's not easy to feel someone. That person has to be -- has to be, for me, like good, first of all, but has to be hard and also understand my personality. Because I don't think I'm easy, but I think I'm quite a good worker. So, you know, most of people that I know is good, so I sent like some message to maybe somebody here. I want to work with people, but they are not ready to travel that much. That's always trouble, you know. I think is few good coaches that I really want to work with, but they're able to travel and just part time, and I don't think I need that.

Q. You have said you love playing at the US Open. What are some things that you love about playing in New York, and how did you spend your birthday yesterday?

GAEL MONFILS: Well, I love the city, first. For me, it's the first time, you know, I travel overseas with my mom it was here, so for me it means a lot. First time I see my dad overseas was here, too. Then here it's simple. You know, my dad when I have been with him and my previous physio, you know, he passed away like a few years ago, and he bring me, you know, to the Bronx and, you know, had a family and bring me, you know, to some friend he had. Then he show me that, you know, the community, the black community was behind me. I was not aware about that also, here. You know, and then they start to come to the stadium, bring me that energy, and then they just teach me that here that I can feel so like at home and I have a second family also, as I say as even in the French Open. So when I feel good, the crowd is behind me, have a great spirit, I think I can be very tough to beat.

Q. Your next match is likely going to be against Federer. Do you expect to still have that support of the crowd?

GAEL MONFILS: First I think he need to win. Then if it's against Federer, why not? I played Rafa one time here and I think it was pretty much even, so why not?

Q. You're very mentally focused today. On the days when you're struggling for focus, what kind of crazy things get through your mind?

GAEL MONFILS: Well, I don't know. Just sometime -- I don't know how to explain it. Like straightaway it's -- for me tennis is a sport, you know. It's not a job, you know, it's a sport. Sometime if I'm fed up with that, you know, just leave it. For me, I don't know if it's bad to say it and for sure I will use like bad words in English, but it's like, you know, don't give a shit. You know, it's like okay, next one. It sounds bad in English, but what I mean is I care about the match. I don't care about, you know, other things. It's like if I'm not happy, it's okay. I want just to be happy, you know. If I'm not happy, fine. Have it, you know.

Q. Is that what you mean by calm your mind when you were talking before about keeping your mind calm out there?

GAEL MONFILS: Yeah. You know, I just try to be relax, because I'm always been a relaxed person. I try my best for everything. If I don't feel happy, I don't do it.

Q. Your flexibility on the court is unbelievable. Do you do yoga? Do you use that?

GAEL MONFILS: Just every day thanks for my mom and my dad. Seriously just it's because of them.

Q. What was going on late in the first set and sort of the second set?

GAEL MONFILS: Second set, yeah, I just get a bit pissed. I finish. Then I was sorry for Grigor, because I was in front, and he was like, Just serve. Because obviously I give you the game, so it's okay. Move it.

Q. What were you upset about?

GAEL MONFILS: Myself. Sometimes when I get frustrated, you know, as I told you, when I don't like, I don't do it. It's nothing against anyone. I was upset. Come on. We need to move on, you know.

Q. Forgive me. I may not know your past enough. I don't think I have ever seen a player drink Coke during a match. Is that your thing normally?

GAEL MONFILS: (Smiling) well, sometime, you know, I just feel like I want a Coke, you know, and I drink a Coke, you know. (Smiling.)

Q. You toasted the crowd.

GAEL MONFILS: My agent, because every time it make him smile, my coach.

Q. You mentioned a moment ago it's a little bit about what it's like to face Roger Federer. What would you describe what Roger Federer's career has meant to you and what an opportunity to play him on this stage would mean to you?

GAEL MONFILS: Well, he's definitely the legend of the tennis, you know. I think right now he's the greatest tennis player we ever had, and for me it's always challenging to play against him. It's always great, because no matter what, you know, I will say to my children, you know, I played against him. Even I kill him, you know. And this is cool. And when you have this chance, you know, it's why, you know, I think I play tennis for, to against a big legend, big court, short time. That's what I train for. That's why every day I wake up and I wish I could play those matches, you know. It's like, for me it's the best thing can happen is to play against that guy on that stage, you know.

Q. Can you explain how important music is in your buildup to the match? Do you use music after the match to bring yourself back down?

GAEL MONFILS: After, all the time. I think music for me, it's part of my life. I like music. I think I'm very emotional, so, you know, I just try to take all the emotion, you know, that music bring it to me, you know, some make -- I mean, help me to calm down some, for sure motivate me more. You know, there's always music. I think just make me smooth before the match, you know.

Q. What's on your iPhone?

GAEL MONFILS: Yeah, right at the time he ask me, the guy, was Beyonce, Partition; and then sometimes is Dancehall. Before the match I love Dancehall music. You know, Vasque, like heavy from Caribbean. And then after I'm like Lana Del Rey. What else? Some friends who sings song also. I listen to everything.

Q. What were your thoughts and emotions when you had the two match points?

GAEL MONFILS: You know, nothing special, you know. I was like saying to myself, Keep it simple, you know, and try to make him play them. Because I knew that he will force it, like he will put the first ball in and then for sure come to the net very quick. So it was more like, you know, I be relax and just lean a bit more on my forehand return and try to make it. And then we just played those two points, and, you know, well done.

Q. How would you describe what happened from then on?

GAEL MONFILS: Well, then it was tough, because I think then my serve was not good, so it let me a bit down again at 5-All. I think maybe I hit a double fault. I think I had a point for 6-5 and could not really quite use my serve. I think the side I was was tougher because it was against the wind, so it was a bit tougher. Then rush me with his long return, so it was very tough. But then he play good. He played good. He had the set. Then physically I had a drop, five minutes. But maybe come from mentally also, because I thought that I could have play better this fourth set. For five minutes I think I had -- I was a little bit, yeah, tired and mentally also tired. So then it came quick. I think then he start to be very offensive. So then it was very tough to handle it.

Q. You were saying yesterday that you wanted to try to keep your head clear, and I'm quoting you, not give a shit. But do you think maybe after the two match points you maybe gave a shit, if you will? Maybe he got into your head?

GAEL MONFILS: Not really, because actually, you know, it happens. When you have match point and I had easy forehand, maybe that. But I think was cool. I think he hit two big serves and good forehand volley and then good forehand down the line. I think, you know, I did my best, so it was okay. Then I think, you know, what happened in the fifth is more that during the match I was focused like from the first point to the fifth, and then sort of I have a little drop. Because I will say not really used to do this. Sometimes, as I told to you, to keep my emotion is fatigue me a little bit. It's tough to handle it. And then it's a matter of five minutes. You know, I think I was down five minutes. Roger just jump on me. He could easy. I don't know, maybe be relax for those first two games and then maybe it would be another story. Those two games came like so quick, and then, you know, it's tough.

Q. You were saying also talking about being able to tell your grandchildren that you played against perhaps the greatest player of all time. Speaking reverentially about him. You took the first two sets from him and made it a hell of a match out there. Do you take a lot of positives away from tonight?

GAEL MONFILS: Yeah, for sure, you know. I think, as you said, I come strong. I played good, you know. I was stick to my tactic, you know. I was happy that I could do it. I was happy that also -- you know, sometime when you want to do good, it's tough to deliver, and I think did. So I was happy. You know, I was expecting a big crowd like this. At the end I'm frustrated, but I'm happy, you know. I think I gave my best. Simply Roger was too good at the end. You know, it's okay. I need a bit of time to forget this, but then, you know, it give me more motivation, you know, that, you know, I could make it. I think it's very positive.

Q. How does this tournament and this summer, how does this help moving forward? How do you sort of sustain this form?

GAEL MONFILS: As I say, you know, it's tough, because this summer I think been very tough for me. I was very close the all the matches, you know. Novak twice, Roger. You know, it just show me that I'm not far. I need to keep believe on myself, keep believe that I can do better. I see that I can play a high level for months, and, you know, the best part on that is more that I not get injured. That's the best part. It's been a while I play high level like with 100% healthy. So, you know, I'm more than happy for that.

Q. Do you think you have more clarity in your mind without a coach?

GAEL MONFILS: You know, it's been a year and a half I have no coach, so for me it's okay, you know. I guess used to no coach. This question now is bored. I have no coach, yes, but it's fine. I try to have one, as I say, but is no more credit or not. It's like, I have no coach. I do it, you know. If I have to play with no coach, I play with no coach. It's simple.

Q. As I said, Roger, his legacy is unrivaled. It seemed to me like the crowd out there was equally for you. I don't know, did you feel that way?

GAEL MONFILS: Not really. I think they have been cheering more for Roger. Then, you know, it's -- it was for sure. And then suddenly, you know, I feel it more that, because through the second set and then he start to say some come ons and he start to put pressure on me a little bit more. Then the come forward more and more, and I think he needed the crowd and the crowd stuck with him.

Q. The other day you said would you tell your children about the opportunity you had tonight.

GAEL MONFILS: Yeah.

Q. What do you think now you're tell your children about what happened?

GAEL MONFILS: I will tell them like, Dad had a very good opportunity and he did well. He did well. I think he believe. You know, it's like so far, but he did believe, and that's positive. I will say that's positive and I will make sure that my children will win this one.

Q. You really were in control of the match. You outplayed him the first two sets, no question about it. Then he just finds that extra gear and hangs on, you know, and obviously gets to the fifth set. I mean, you know, as the guy on the other side of the court, what does it feel like when all of a sudden Roger Federer becomes the Roger Federer that we all know and that he clearly played better as the match went on?

GAEL MONFILS: You know, at the beginning I feel good, because when you have a tactic or plan, a game plan, stick with. That's why he's Roger Federer, because he change so many times. He start with chipping very low. I think I handled it good. So then he stick with longer points. It was 50-50, and then he try to come to the net like very often. It was a bit better for him. Then suddenly he start to mix everything. You know, that's why he's the greatest player, because he can do everything. You know, he just feel good. The answer is he feel good. Now the last part is, you know, like I need to find a way that I be answering. Every time he do something, I will answer. At the end, as I told you, I think I will keep working, believe in myself, and I will find it.

Q. Will you look at this as Roger took this away from you?
GAEL MONFILS: Well, he did, because I think he took the opportunity. Like, you know, I think that's a good example, you know, because he had match point, he come forward, you know, he never is tired. I think I, yeah, he took it.

During the Davis Cup semi-final I was already taking anti-inflammatories in case I had to play on Sunday. There, I had pain. I need to find out what I have."

"Since the beginning of the tournament, I have not been at the top level physically. I made myself a little worse today, so, inevitably, it frustrates me. First losing, and then hurting myself. It's been a while since I was not injured, I have a little pain in the knee. I hope this is not too serious, I think the patellar tendon is slightly inflamed. I should stop for one or two weeks at most, and I'm hoping that will be all. But if on Tuesday (the MRI), I found myself with six weeks off, that would be harder. Everything would be harder. So I really hope it's nothing serious and that I will only have to stop for between a few days and two weeks. "

Monfils' knee injury threatens status for Davis Cup final

For French players, building up to the Davis Cup is now the priority for the season. Gael Monfils is unsure whether he will be fully prepared to play for the team in the November final, having reinjured his knee at Metz while reaching the semifinals.

"The knee is bad," he said. "I will undergo an MRI on Tuesday."

The injury could keep him sidelined for a month and a half, he added.

Monfils, who indicated he had only played because the tournament is in France, is also entered in Tokyo and Shanghai. Along with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet, he was expected to be among the potential singles players for France when it plays Switzerland in the Davis Cup final.

Gael Monfils held his nerve on Friday to record one of the biggest wins of his career and get nine-time former champion France back on level terms at 1-1 against Switzerland in the Davis Cup final.

Monfils was at his aggressive best to beat World No. 2 Roger Federer of Switzerland for the first time in 14 months, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3, in the second singles rubber of the tie. There was to be no repeat of September’s US Open quarter-final, when Federer bounced back from losing the first two sets to defeat Monfils 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2.

Federer, who had won 18 of his past 19 matches since the US Open, was largely powerless against Monfils, who hit 44 winners, including 10 aces for his 36th match win of the season. The pair’s 11th meeting lasted one hour and 46 minutes and it was Monfils’ first victory over Federer since the 2013 Shanghai Rolex Masters.

The 28-year-old Monfils was rock solid on serve – winning 17 of his 17 first service points in the first set, 16 of his 16 second service points in the second set and 11 of his 12 first service points in the third set. The Frenchman denied Federer two break points en route to recording his 10th Davis Cup match win in 12 singles rubbers.

Federer, who has an ATP World Tour-best 72-12 match record on the season including a 5-6 record in finals, committed 29 unforced errors in the end. He is now 37-8 in singles ties for Switzerland, having suffered his first singles defeat in the competition since losing to American John Isner in February 2012.

Earlier in the day, Stan Wawrinka beat France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to give Switzerland a 1-0 lead.

Did the IPTL let you put the Davis Cup final out of mind?

"I have the Davis Cup in my head, but I don't think about it. I won't forget it, but I don't think about it."

About the loss, what was missing?

"I don't know. It's too easy to talk after."

What do you think of Yannick Noah's reaction?

"I was told about it, but I'm not getting involved in all that. I didn't read it, I don't want to read it nor hear about it and I don't feel like being asked about it (smiles). The Cup is over for me."

Yannick Noah means something to you though?

"I adore Yannick. If someone asks me what I think of Yannick, my answer will be he's a fabulous person. I love it when I can talk to him. As to all that about the Cup, I don't want to know."

The final was traumatic?

"I'm obviously disappointed, but in the same way as in 2010 (loss to Serbia). It's like when they always want to talk about my match against Federer (US Open, a loss after having two match points). At some point you have to stop."

Jan de Witt your future coach?

"I'm in the process of changing my entire team. I've talked to Jan, but right now I'd rather not talk about it when nothing's been decided. It could be Jan or someone else. I'll just say that next year, I'll start up with a real team (coach, kinesiologist, physical trainer)."

When will we know?

"When everything's signed. People will give me the Evil Eye after. The goal is the Australian Open, but we'll see. Right now I'm going back home (Switzerland), I'll train and then I'm playing January 1 at 17.00 against Murray on centre court in Abu Dhabi (exhibition).

When did you feel the need for a team?

"It's not easy to find two-three competent people who understand the goals and are ready to travel. I've spoken to five coaches I like with Nico (Lamperin, his agent). But three of them only wanted to be there for around 15 weeks."

Will Gilles Simon (coached by Jan de Witt) be on your team?

"You'll see. I get along well with Gilles and we give each other advice. We do that all the time. We're buddies but we're adversaries. Gilles says it well: 'I'm happy to help you, but I don't want to help you enough that you beat me.' That's normal. We're mates, but he'll have his team and I'll have mine.."

Could you share a coach?

"It's possible, but it wouldn't be the same team. He'd play his tournaments and I'd play mine. If it's Jan, the first thing I'd tell him would be: 'What I tell you, you don't tell Gilles, and I don't want to know what Gilles tells you.'"

You know more know about what you need?

"No, I know where I want to be. Seeing as I'm not there, I'm trying trying different solutions. It starts by trying things out, listening to others' advice. When you grow up, you mature and you see things differently. Whether it's in my life as a young man, in the choice of team and in my game, I'm putting quite a few things in place. My goal is high. I hope to be competitive from the Australian Open on. But when you change things, sometimes it takes a while before things start working well."

What is your ideal season?

"Obviously to win a Slam (smiles). And if I could chose, it would be Roland. But that would be a dream season ..."

After Wawrinka and Cilic, you don't think you can do it too?

"We always tell ourselves it's possible, but you have to do it. What they did is big. Stan and Marin beat the best during those two weeks. Everyone thinks it, but they did it."

Isn't that a sign that establishment is being shaken up?

"We'll see. I've thought for a while that quite a few have knocked on the door. But they (big four) are really on top because they manage to be good at the right time and make the right choices. If we can start doing that, we'll be dangerous."

Experience must have given you some paths to make the right choices?

"I've followed the wrong paths because I still haven't won a Slam. So I'm looking, because right now what I'm doing hasn't worked. It's so tricky.Sometimes you train a lot, it doesn't work and you don't know why. Other times you train less, and it works and you don't know why."

But there's still a routine ...

"Sometimes you have to change it. When I get a new team, it's because I want a new routine. For example, if my physical trainer tells me: 'Every morning it's an hour of footwork', it might not be written down in my book, but if running for an hour helps me win Roland, I'll run for an hour. But maybe it'll take my legs away and I'll lose in the first round of Roland. It's not what I want, but I'll try it. When I take on a new team, I'm open to any idea that will exploit my potential. Maybe I won't agree with some of the ideas, but given that my own haven't led anywhere, I'll take others. When you hire someone full time, that someone will necessarily impose a routine and you listen. If I hire someone, it isn't to carry my bag. I listen to win."

Are you more aware of your potential?

"Gilles tells me all the time (smiles). It's a mix of everything. I try to be better at everything I do, both on and off the court. It's a balance. The experiences from other stages of my life helps me enormously. Perhaps I'll make better choices."

And the Davis Cup in all that?

"We need to talk to each other again. There's much to look at. We mobilised this year. Is everyone prepared to do the same next year? We know we have to mobilise together, it's not an individual thing."

Will you tell your team mates you're ready to do it again?

"Who isn't ready to play for their country? What's good between us is that we talk. We need to get together now. This year we had a different fervour. Everyone is starting from scratch, but will there be the same fervour? I don't know. A lot will depend on the discussions we have with each other. Whatever we decide, we'll do it full out. The question is, is it the priority of priorities? Or just a priority? We don't know which method is best. After all, if we put the Cup on a pedestal, is that good?"

W wywiadzie dla L'Equipe Gael Monfils mówił o tym, że chciałby znaleźć stałego trenera, który pomagałby mu przez cały sezon 2015. Francuz od dłuższego czasu pozostaje bowiem bez szkoleniowca.

Choć Gael Monfils jest jednym z najbardziej lubianych tenisistów w rozgrywkach, w swojej ojczyźnie jest mocno krytykowany przez ekspertów za podejście do tenisa. Przede wszystkim obrywa mu się za brak trenera, który mógłby właściwie pokierować jego karierą. Jednak od przyszłego sezonu ma to ulec zmianie, ponieważ paryżanin wyjawił, że poszukuje stałego szkoleniowca.

- Rozmawiałem z pięcioma osobami, które dobrze znam i lubię. Trzy z nich powiedziały mi, że mogą ze mną współpracować, jednak tylko przez 15 tygodni w roku. A ja potrzebuję trenera na cały sezon - mówił 28-letni Monfils.

Według francuskich mediów, nowym trenerem paryżanina ma zostać Jan de Witt, który obecnie współpracuje z Gillesem Simonem i Jarkko Nieminenem. - Rozmawiałem z Janem. Ale na razie nie chcę o tym mówić. To może być on albo ktoś inny - odpowiedział Monfils, zapytany czy De Witt będzie jego trenerem.

Francuz ogłosił, że do sezonu 2015 chce przystąpić ze sztabem szkoleniowym z prawdziwego zdarzenia. - Chcę mieć prawdziwy sztab. Stałego szkoleniowca, fizjoterapeutę i trenera od przygotowania fizycznego.
