Murray Keen To Conquer Cramping Issues Following Washington Defeat
Spoiler:
Former World No. 1 lost to Ymer in the first round in Washington on Monday
Andy Murray is determined to find a solution to his ongoing cramping issues after he struggled physically during his first-round defeat against Mikael Ymer on Monday at the Citi Open in Washington.
The former World No. 1, who also suffered cramping in Newport last month, battled against the Swede in the American heat for two hours and 50 minutes and looked physically drained in the deciding set.
“I [have] struggled a little bit with [cramping] the past two tournaments. I need to have a little look at that with my team and maybe see why that is, make a few changes,” Murray said during his post-match press conference.
“In terms of the training off the court and on the practice court, I'll have to look at that as well and see if there's more that I could be doing, maybe different ways of practising to help with that. Scheduling training more in the heat of the day at 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. rather than 10 a.m. when it's not quite as humid, not quite as warm, not quite as helpful. There are a few things I can look at.”

After losing the first set, Murray responded by taking his chances in the second set to level the match at the ATP 500 event. However, the Scot, who admitted he normally enjoys the humid conditions, was unable to match Ymer’s intensity in the third set.
“It was disappointing. I thought there was some good tennis in the first set. After that both of us were struggling a bit physically,” Murray added. “The level of the tennis was not great. I had chances in the first set to close that out. I had set point at 6-5, then three in the tie-break and didn't get it. [It was] frustrating.”
Murray is now 22-13 on the season across all levels, having reached finals in Sydney and Stuttgart earlier this year. The 35-year-old will look to regain his best form when he takes to court in Montreal next week at an ATP Masters 1000 event he has won twice, including in his previous appearance in 2015.
“The only positive is now that I get more time to prepare for the tournament in Canada," Murray said. "I guess if I can address sort of the physical issue I've had the last couple of tournaments, then that would be a positive thing. I obviously need to address that now.”

ANDY MURRAY ON DEALING WITH INJURIES – “I had to accept that I might not play again before I had the operation and whilst I was going through that process, it also made me realise why I was playing tennis in the first place. Yes, winning titles is nice and winning major events is great but the reason why I started playing tennis as a kid was not for that, it was because I loved the sport and really enjoyed doing it and that’s why I’m still playing.”

Former World No. 1 is a two-time champion in Ohio
Andy Murray will compete at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati after moving into the main draw on Saturday.
The former World No. 1 was due to compete in qualifying, but has now taken the unused special exempt spot, which opened up following Jack Draper’s defeat in Montreal on Friday. The Scot will face Swiss star Stan Wawrinka in a popcorn first-round match in Cincinnati.
Murray has a strong record in Ohio, having triumphed at the hard-court ATP Masters 1000 event in 2008 and 2011, before he advanced to the final in 2016. He joins a stacked field in Cincinnati, featuring World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.

Former World No. 1 next plays Norrie
Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka wrote another chapter into their long-running rivalry on Monday at the Western & Southern Open, where the Scot advanced with a hard-fought 7-6(3), 5-7, 7-5 victory in Cincinnati.
The former World No. 1 showed his fighting qualities during the two-hour, 34-minute first-round match as he scampered around the baseline to hang in points. He also caused damage with his backhand, while he rallied from a break down in the third set to improve to 13-9 in their ATP Head2Head series.

Following his epic two-hour and 54-minute win, the Scot now holds a 35-14 record in Cincinnati, having lifted the trophy in 2008 and 2011. The 35-year-old will look to taste further success at the hard-court event when he faces Cameron Norrie in the second round after the ninth seed edged #NextGenATP Dane Holger Rune 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4.
Murray arrived in Ohio off the back of a disappointing first-round exit in Montreal last week. However, the 46-time tour-level champion has shown signs of promise this season, reaching finals in Sydney and Stuttgart, helping him rise back into the Top 50 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings for the first time since 2018.
In a tight battle in Ohio, there was little to separate World No. 47 Murray and Wawrinka in the first set. The Scot consistently found depth on his watertight groundstrokes as he looked to force the 37-year-old into mistakes, who combined moments of magic with erratic play. After both remained strong on serve, a tie-break was left to decide the opener, with Murray clinching the set when Wawrinka fired a forehand long.
Wawrinka refused to go away in the second set, though, and was rewarded for his attacking play in the eighth game when he broke to lead 5-3. After failing to serve out the set, the three-time Grand Slam champion finally levelled when he broke Murray again in the 12th game.
With both players tiring in a physical third set, it was Murray who found an extra gear despite receiving multiple medical timeouts. The Scot battled from 0-2 down as he stood close to the baseline and stayed in rallies, eventually breaking to lead 6-5 before successfully holding to triumph. Murray let out a roar and raised his arms aloft when he sealed the match on his third match point
Wawrinka was aiming to earn his first hard-court match win since the 2021 Australian Open. The Swiss star was competing at the ATP Masters 1000 event for the 13th time, with his best result a run to the semi-finals in 2012.
