Fed drugi w wieczornej pierwszego dnia, wybornie :D

#13: Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo (ESP) vs. Somdev Devvarman (IND) :woho:

Nic mnie bardziej nie zaskoczy, przy konkurencji typu Smyczek/Reynolds, Ramos/Ginepri, M. Granollers/Kudla akurat to spotkanie będzie na kamerach. Ramirez-Hidalgo dostał niepowtarzalną szansę na przejście 1. rundy szlema poza Paryżem, ciekawe czy ją wykorzysta.

Tennis-Open-Federer delivers ominous warning to US Open rivals

NEW YORK, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Roger Federer is feeling the magic once again and that can only spell trouble for his opponents in the U.S. Open.

The glitzy yet gritty final grand slam of the year begins on Monday and Federer, five-times champion, is anxious to reclaim the title he last won in 2008.

A year ago, the Swiss virtuoso reached the semi-finals but lost a five-set thriller to Novak Djokovic, who went on to win the championship over Rafa Nadal.

"I felt good last year, but probably felt that maybe at times the matches were not always in my racquet, whereas maybe this time around I feel like if I'm playing well I can dictate who's going to win or lose," said Federer.

"It's going to take something special from my opponent to win. That's kind of how it feels right now."

The 31-year-old Federer won a seventh Wimbledon crown - his 17th grand slam title - this year and regained his spot as the best player on the planet. He is the top seed at Flushing Meadows and if the seeding holds form will play Olympic champion Andy Murray in the semi-finals after Murray beat the Swiss in straight sets to win the gold medal.

POSSIBLE SHOWDOWN

With an injury sidelining Nadal, Djokovic avoids Federer or Murray until a possible showdown in the final. But the Serb denied he had a dream path through the tournament.

"I don't think there is a perfect draw, to be honest with you," he told reporters. "The draw is something that you cannot affect. It's a question of luck, obviously.

"There are 128 players here who have plenty of motivation to perform their best in the grand glam, the last major of the year, so I'm sure that they want to cause some upsets in the opening round.

"I'm truly taking one step at a time. I had good and bad draws in the past, but it's something I cannot affect, so I'm not calculating or predicting anything.

"I'm just trying to focus on my game, which is the most important thing."

Murray, who lost to Federer in four sets in this year's Wimbledon final but gained his revenge at the London Games, comes into the two-week U.S. Open with some much-needed momentum.

"Obviously winning the Olympics was the biggest win of my career, that's for sure," said the Scotsman, who is still searching for his first grand slam title.

"It meant a lot to me. The Wimbledon final, I mean, that's the first time I have been there. I was happy with the way I played.

"It was obviously disappointing, a tough one to take for a few days afterwards, but I don't know. I feel confident in myself just now. That's what's important."

Though he is playing well, Federer declined to predict a championship at Flushing Meadows, saying there is always the possibility of a first-round shocker.

"You have to always be very careful how you say it and how you then play," he said. "I will take it one match at a time. There's no doubt about that. I will never ever underestimate an opponent ever again. I did that enough when I was a teenager.

"I already reached my goal for the year becoming world number one and getting Wimbledon again and getting a medal for Switzerland. It's been incredible.

"But I do have this one left for me this year where I really, really want to do well, and I couldn't be more happy returning here as number one. It's super exciting."

Matt Cronin’s Day 1 Picks

Obrazek

MEN, TOP HALF

1-ROGER FEDERER VS. DONALD YOUNG

Last year at this tournament, this would not have been called a complete mis-match because Young was playing with confidence, ambition and force. But that is no longer the case, as the American just won his first contest since February in Winston-Salem, snapping a 17-match losing streak, but then he lost his next match. So Young, who reached the fourth round of the US Open for the first time last year with a great five-set win over Stan Wawrinka and had a whale of a time doing so, now has to walk on to a show court at the US Open against a five-time champion who is playing with more confidence than he was last year and is coming off title runs at Wimbledon and Cincinnati.

Federer does not get nervous against lesser players and rarely chokes, so the chances of Young pulling off a miraculous upset are extremely slim. Yes, like Federer’s nemesis Rafael Nadal, Young is a lefty, but he does not have the same weight on his serve or forehand to pummel Federer’s backhand side. He also does not have enough oomph on his shots overall to back Federer off the baseline.

Hopefully for Young - who is a very nice guy - this match won’t get out of control quickly. Let’s assume that Young will inhale some good feelings from his 2011 run and will play the Swiss tough for a set and a half, but he won’t be able to match Federer in crucial points. The Swiss will begin his attempt to win a sixth US Open title with a straight-sets victory.

JAMES BLAKE VS. LUKAS LACKO

This could very well be Blake’s last US Open, and even if it’s not, if he returns at the age of 33 in 2013, it’s highly doubtful that a guy who depends on his wheels and has chronic knee problems could make it to the second week.

But he does have a chance of getting that far this year because his knee is feeling good, and he has been playing reasonably well since the start of the Emirates Airline US Open Series. He’s lost some very close matches to good players as of late -- to Kei Nishikori at Cincinnati and to Andy Roddick at Winston-Salem. But he has been in every match, which means that if he can just find a way to win the big points early on at the Open, he could ride a wave of crowd support into at least the fourth round.

Part of the reason for that projection is because Blake has a reasonable draw. In Lacko, he faces a fairly powerful 24-year-old, who by no means is to be taken likely but a guy who has sputtered since the spring and will not enter the tournament with confidence. If Blake can serve consistently well (which, to me, has always been one of the biggest problems with his game), play steady with his backhand, dictate with his forehand and jump on second serves, he can beat Lacko, then possibly 24th seed Marcel Granollers in the second round and, yes, even Canadian sensation Milos Raonic in the third round.

Besting third seed Andy Murray in the round of 16 might be too big of an ask at this point in his career, but given how popular the New York and Connecticut native is and how well he has played at the US Open in the past, I get the sense that Blake will be heard from during the first week. Take Blake in four sets over Lacko.

OTHER MATCHES OF NOTE:

Unlike last year, Mardy Fish is not the top U.S. man, as he’s seeded No. 23, which is behind John Isner and Andy Roddick, but he’s playing nearly as well as he was then after a very rough spring, when he discovered that he had a heart ailment. As long as his serve is clicking and he’s crunching backhand returns, he should take care of Go Soeda in three sets… U.S. veteran Michael Russell will take on No. 16 Gilles Simon, which is a tough match-up for him because the Frenchman is cagey and doesn’t give away a lot. He’ll take Russell out of his comfort zone and win in three… It sort of amazes me that Nicolas Almagro is the 11th seed, given how up and down he can be, but he’s really improved his all-court game. However, the Spaniard will be the first top-15 seed to go down, when Czech veteran Radek Stepanek dices him up… U.S. teen Jack Sock does hold some promise, but he’s not up to No. 22 Florian Mayer’s standards yet… No. 27 Sam Querrey could make some real statements at the tournament, given how well he’s been playing, and should be able to pound past Yen-Hsun Lu in straight sets… There is very little that Alex Bolgomolov Jr. can do to hurt Andy Murray, so watch the third-seeded Scot take care of this contest in well under two hours… No. 6 Tomas Berdych will have his hands full with the flashy Belgian David Goffin, but he will deliver too many big blows and eventually wear Goffin down in four… Marcel Granollers, who is seeded No. 24, will play a little hurt, but he’s still too solid for American Denis Kudla… This is Canadian Milos Raonic’s time to shine and reach the second week. He has most of the tools but still isn’t executing on the big points against the elite players. But he will in a four-set win over the underrated Colombian Santiago Giraldo.

WOMEN, TOP HALF

9-LI NA VS. HEATHER WATSON

Li has lit up Paris and Australia with her fine play and exuberant personality but has never gone very deep at the US Open, even though she’s an excellent hard-court player. She did reach the quarters back in 2009, when she fell to eventual champion Kim Clijsters, but she has never come into New York playing as well as she has in the past few weeks, reaching the final of Montreal, where she was edged by Petra Kvitova, and then winning Cincinnati. She’s very happy to have coaxed the notable coach Carlos Rodriguez (who once coached former US Open champion Justine Henin) onto her team and now is playing more freely.

Other than her admitted mental checkouts, Li does not have many holes in her game. She can hit winners from almost any position and has a strong serve and return. In Watson, she’ll face a solid young Briton, who is fast and steady. She does not have overwhelming power but can competently counterpunch. However, Watson is just not at Li’s level now, and China’s top player has been known to get on a hot streak and ride it for weeks. She’s my pick to reach the semifinals out of this quarter, and she will win this contest in two sets.

15-LUCIE SAFAROVA VS. MELANIE OUDIN

Oudin, a quarterfinalist in 2009, finally began to turn her season around in the spring and early summer, but she has hit the wall in her last few tournaments and now has to bear down mentally again to rediscover her confidence. Unfortunately for Oudin, Safarova is a very solid veteran who is not prone to bouts of wildness. She cannot hope that her opponent will fly balls over the wall, so the Georgian is going to have to work the points diligently until she can discover openings. Safarova’s left-handed forehand is lethal, and she’s a fairly smart player who understands her limitations, so she’s not going to get into standard and long back-court rallies with the 20-year-old.

Oudin can win this match, but she’s going to have to play smart and courageously. She can’t get down on herself early and must make good use of her forehand. She not only has to “believe,” as she wrote on her shoes in 2009, but also execute. She will for awhile, but at the end of the third set, it will be Safarova who will walk away with the victory.

OTHERS MATCHES OF INTEREST:

China’s Zheng Jie is fast and fun to watch but will need three sets to overcome the tough French veteran Virginie Razzano, who upset Serena Williams at Roland Garros… Sabine Lisicki, the 16th seed, will have her hands full with Sorana Cirstea if the Romanian can keep the ball in the court, but she doesn't do so often enough, so expect the German to take this three-setter… Three-time champion Kim Clijsters hasn't played since the Olympics, but her experience will be too much for 18s National winner Victoria Duval to handle… American Varvara Lepchenko is seeded for the first time at No. 32 and should be able to rough up France’s Mathilde Johansson in straight sets… Melinda Czink is a very capable player, but No. 2 Maria Sharapova is fresh and ready to go and should get through in straight sets… Stanford teammates Mallory Burdette and Nicole Gibbs both have winnable matches, and I see Burdette taking out Timea Bacsinszky and Gibbs upending Alize Cornet. However, I don't see another young American, Jamie Hampton, upsetting Marion Bartoli, as she hasn't played since Wimbledon… Petra Kvitova has never played so well on North American hard courts and should take care of the very good Polona Hercog in straight sets… The popcorn match of the day will be between 17th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and the unseeded Slovakian veteran Daniela Hantuchova. This one will surely go through three, and it will be the improving Russian who will come through, but not before Hantuchova makes her shriek in anguish a few times.
