http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/news/ ... g_gun.htmlThey are no relation, but with a surname in common and plying the same trade, the nickname is naturally going to stick.
For 22-year-old German Daniel Masur, hearing his coach call him “Wally” as a child for the first time surely soared over his head.
Daniel was only born five months after the former Australian professional played his last Roland-Garros. For the record, Wally was handed a straight-sets send-off against fourth seed Andei Medvedev in 1994.
Masur – the Australian version – was no slouch, having reached an Australian Open and US Open semi-final and rising as high as 15th in the world.
Masur – the German version – took his first step toward reaching his first Roland-Garros main draw with a breakthrough victory over a top-100 opponent on Tuesday.
“We had a nice little chat there because he definitely recognised my name on the draw."
His 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 upset of No.2 seed Adam Pavlasek was his first win in Grand Slam qualifying. His previous best win came against rising Russian Andrey Rublev, ranked No.117, in Barcelona qualifying.
“Wow, biggest win is hard to define. I think everybody who participates here wants to qualify so this is just the first step of three,” Masur said. “There are two more hard rounds in front of me.”
It improved the German’s record on clay at the Futures and Challenger level this season to 3-6, with his standout result being a semi-final run at the Koblenz Open Challenger on indoor hardcourt in January.
“I used to play really good on clay but I think I changed my game a bit and now it suits more the faster surfaces,” he said. “Normally as a German I feel pretty comfortable on clay but my start of the season wasn’t as good as I expected.”
It is a Roland-Garros start Wally – the original – would give the thumbs-up. The Australian showed an interest in his young namesake’s progress last season.
“Yeah actually last year, October, I played a Challenger in Canberra,” Daniel said. “We had a nice little chat there because he definitely recognised my name on the draw.
“When I was aged 12 my coach Lars [Uebel] started to call me that because he knew Wally pretty good.”
Masur will take on Filip Krajinovic in the second round after the unseeded Serbian staged a comeback from a set and a break down to deny Australian former world No.53 Sam Groth, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2.
Slovak fifth seed Norbert Gombos may not have an ex-pro namesake as a nickname but the 26-year-old made equally impressive progress of his own on Tuesday.
The world No.92 dismissed Jason Jung, of Chinese Taipei, 6-4, 6-4 to join Masur in the second round.
“I was playing really well. Now I’ve got good confidence because last week I played the finals [at the Heilbronn Challenger] and made it to the top 100 for the first time so I was really happy about it,” Gombos said.
“I came here to achieve better goals. In previous years I wasn’t that successful but now I’m feeling really good.”
Gombos had an impressive run on French soil earlier in the year when he reached the quarter-finals in Marseille as a qualifier before falling to defending champion Nick Kyrgios. He will next meet Yasutaka Uchiyama after the Japanese player saw off Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Former world No.68 Blaz Kavcic denied home hopeful Tristan Lamasine in a hard-fought clash lasting nearly three hours. The Slovenian prevailed 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4 to set a second-round meeting with wildcard Maxime Hamou.
Another former top-70 player, Tobias Kamke also advanced. The German fought back to beat Rajeev Ram 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 after the American had served for the match at 5-4 in the second set.
