Rafa Eyes No. 1 In Montreal After Murray Withdrawal
Spoiler:
Spaniard could take over top spot on 14 August
Rafael Nadal's path to No. 1 became a lot simpler with the withdrawal of Andy Murray from the Coupe Rogers in Montreal on Thursday. Nadal needs to reach the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament to return to the top spot in the Emirates ATP Rankings.
The 31-year-old Spaniard was last No. 1 in June 2014. He has spent a total of 141 weeks at No. 1.

Murray, who's recovering from a hip injury, has reigned at No. 1 for 39 weeks. Last November, he became the 26th player and first British male to reach No. 1 in the history of the Emirates ATP Rankings (since 23 August 1973).
“Sadly I’ve had to withdraw from Montreal, it’s a tournament that I have a lot of great memories from. I’m working hard as I can to get back on the court as soon as possible,” Murray said.
Roger Federer also remains in contention for No. 1 during the U.S. summer, but the Swiss can't get there in Canada.

Sousa finished runner-up to Jack Sock in the Auckland final in January.

The Chinese Taipei player collected his second ATP Challenger Tour title in Chengdu on Sunday to surge back into the Top 70 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. ATP RANKINGS 07-08-2017: Rafael Nadal is 3 wins away from No.1 spot!
Spoiler:
The ATP ranking list didn't bring excitement this Monday, but it could all change in the next 7 days! Andy Muray just became the 15th player since 1973 to hold the top of the ATP standings for at least 40 weeks, but it is not up to him will he be there next Monday as well. Namely, Rafael Nadal is just 285 points behind him, and if Spaniard reaches the semi-final in Montreal (Andy is not playing) he will be the new ruler of men's tennis, for the first time since June 2014! Roger Federer is 920 points behind Nadal in 3rd but he is also in contention for the top spot, especially if he plays his cards well in the following 3 big North American events.
Stan Wawrinka, defending US Open champion, and Novak Djokovic are 4th and 5th but they could only go down, as neither will play again in 2017, opting to end their seasons to heal their injuries.
Marin Cilic is 6th and he is also hoping to continue where he left at Wimbledon, looking to pick up some valuable points in the next few weeks and pass Wawrinka and Djokovic as soon as possible. Dominic Thiem stayed 7th, ahead of Alexander Zverev who grabbed 500 points in Washington yesterday, to consolidate himself in the 4th place of the ATP Race to London.
Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic round-up the Top 10 company and they will also be contenders in the next 3 events. Thre were no changes in the first 16 positions, with Jack Sock moving for 2 places to be 17th, as the top-ranked American ahead of John Isner and Sam Querrey, who are also in the Top 20.
Sam won the title in Los Cabos and he jumped for 4 places to crack the Top 20 for the first time since July 2013. Nick Kyrgios fell from 20th to 24th and he is the biggest loser in the Top 40. Kevin Anderson advanced to his first ATP final in 2 years in Washington and that propelled him to 32nd place, 13 spots above where he was 7 days ago.
Philipp Kohlschreiber also had a good week, winning the title in Kitzbuhel, and that gave him 10 positions in the rankings (beaten finalist Joao Sousa gained 11 positions). Yen-Hsun Lu won his 28th Challenger title in Chengdu and with those points he rose for 19 places, hitting Top 70 again.
Marcel Granollers and Marco Cecchinato are the new players in the Top 100. Full Top 30 list:

Nadal Starts Fourth Stint At No. 1 In Emirates ATP Rankings
Spoiler:
Almost nine years to the day since he first became No. 1, Spain’s Rafael Nadal today returned to the top of the Emirates ATP Rankings for his fourth stint at the pinnacle of men’s professional tennis. Nadal, who has already spent 141 total weeks at No. 1, replaces Great Britain’s Andy Murray, who had held the top spot for 41 weeks since 7 November 2016.
Nadal, who first ascended to No. 1 on 18 August 2008 at the age of 22, last held top spot three years and 45 days ago on 6 July 2014. The Spaniard will now look to stay ahead of his great Swiss rival Roger Federer and finish atop the year-end Emirates ATP Rankings for the first time since 2013 and for the fourth time in his career (2008, 2010, 2013).
"Being No. 1 after all the things that I have been going through the last couple of years is something unbelievable, so [it] is, for me, an amazing achievement to be back to that position after [a] few years, three years," said Nadal.

The 31-year-old Nadal has spent three previous stints at No. 1 – 46 weeks between 18 August 2008 and 5 July 2009, 56 weeks from 7 June 2010 to 3 July 2011 and 39 weeks between 7 October 2013 and 6 July 2014. He holds the record for the longest gap – nine years and three days – between his debut at No. 1 and his return today, which betters the previous mark of American Jimmy Connors, who was first No. 1 on 29 July 1974 and last at No. 1 on 3 July 1983 – a gap of eight years and 339 days.
Chris Kermode, ATP Executive Chairman and President, said, "To regain the No. 1 ranking nine years after having first reached it is unprecedented. Rafa has been setting records throughout his remarkable career and this one is as impressive as any. It shows incredible dedication and longevity, and we congratulate him on this amazing achievement."
The Spanish superstar, who ended the 2016 season early due to a wrist injury, has returned in 2017 playing some of the best tennis of his career. In compiling an ATP World Tour-best 49-9 match record, Nadal has captured four trophies this season, including historic 10th titles at Roland Garros (d. Wawrinka), the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (d. Ramos-Vinolas) and the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell (d. Thiem), in addition to a fifth crown at the Mutua Madrid Open (d. Thiem). He has also reached three other finals – the Australian Open (l. to Federer), Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco (l. to Querrey) and the Miami Open presented by Itau (l. to Federer).
On 12 June, Nadal became the first player to qualify for the 2017 season-ending Nitto ATP Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 12-19 November. It is the 13th straight year that he has qualified for the elite eight-player tournament.
