It will be No. 1 vs. No. 2 for the Wimbledon title as Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer take centre stage on Centre Court on Sunday.
No need for introductions. The Serb and the Swiss are set to clash for the 40th time in their storied FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry. Only Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have met on more occasions in the Open Era (42). Federer owns a 20-19 edge, but it was the World No. 1 who most recently emerged victorious on the clay of Rome.
In last year’s Wimbledon final, Djokovic triumphed in a thrilling affair that went the distance, with Federer saving a match point in the fourth set, before the Serb claimed victory 7-5 in the fifth.
“It was a very important match for me to win last year in Wimbledon final, because I've lost quite a few Grand Slam finals,” said Djokovic. “I was on the verge to win. Roger came back. We went down to the wire in the fifth. To win that match in five sets against Roger on grass was definitely something that gave me a lot of confidence. Few days after that, I got married.”

Djokovic is seeking to claim a third Wimbledon crown overall (2011, ’14), 30 years removed from coach Boris Becker’s maiden triumph at SW19. Victory for the Serb would mark the fourth time a player has successfully defended his title against the same opponent in the Open Era. Bjorn Borg won consecutive crowns over Jimmy Connors in 1977-78 and Federer achieved the feat against Andy Roddick in 2004-05 and again over Rafael Nadal in 2006-07.

“Roger and I played many times,” added Djokovic. “He's one of my greatest rivals. He's one of the people that actually made me a better player, as well. In the matches against him, I went through a lot of different emotions and things that allowed me to understand what I need to do to become a better player and to win against him and win Grand Slam trophies.
“He's so good and so consistent, we shouldn't spend too many words about him. We all know how good he is. He's the greatest ever. There's not enough praise for what he does. But this is where he loves to play. This is where he plays his best tennis. The Centre Court of Wimbledon. Seven titles. It's his court. He loves it. He usually rises up to the occasion. He's always playing his toughest when it matters the most. That's why he's a big champion.”
Federer’s lone victory over Djokovic at the All England Club came in the 2012 semi-finals, en route to his seventh – and most recent – Wimbledon title. A win on Sunday would move the Swiss past Pete Sampras for solo first place on the all-time list. With an eighth title slipping from his grasp in last year’s final, Federer is well aware of the threat Djokovic poses.
“It's great to play Novak anywhere these days because he's a great player,” Federer said. “He's had great success, unbelievable success actually, throughout his career. But especially now the last few years, he's been unbelievably dominant.
“He's become very match tough. He always shows up. It's tough to beat him. He's been very injury free. He's been good for the game. For me, I don't really think about the match we played against each other last year. I just remember it was unbelievably thrilling. The crowd really got into it.
“I'm just happy personally for myself to be back in a final. It's always a big occasion. (Against) Novak, the World No. 1, it obviously adds something extra.”
