US OPEN MONDAY DIARY: BLAKE NOW THE BUTT OF JOKES
New York, U.S.A.
by ATP Staff | 27.08.2012
Kei Nishikori was one of four Japanese
men competing in the US Open first round.
ATPWorldTour.com takes a look at the news and talking points at the US Open on the first Monday.
Blake's Role Reversal
James Blake, who is contesting his 14th season as a pro, admitted he is now the butt of ageist jokes after years of ribbing tour veterans when he was younger. “I knew I was going to get them, because when I was a kid starting out around here I dished them out,” said the 32-year-old American. “So I knew they would come back to haunt me. I remember I used to make fun of Todd Martin. Todd was one of my key guys I would get. I made fun of him for taking so long to warm up, for his grey hair, for all that kind of stuff, for just in general being old. He said, ‘Just wait, just wait. You will be, too.’ Now I'm getting it from everyone. I'm getting the old jokes, the grandpa jokes, and I'm okay with that.”
Lighting Up Empire State Building
The tower of the Empire State Building, the 102-storey skyscraper in New York City that was completed in 1931, was lit tennis-ball yellow in honour of the start of the US Open. The building was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
Isner Fashion Shoot
John Isner features in the latest issue of Vogue, the American fashion and lifestyle magazine. The World No. 10 said, “Off the court, I’m goofy. I’ve played some pretty cool pranks on people before. James Blake knows how to get into my house when I’m gone, so he’ll go and fill up my DVR with Spanish shows. [When I return] I let the air out of the tires of his golf cart, so when he’s driving down to the course, he only gets halfway there. Stuff like that.” The photo shoot and interview took place in April at the River Oaks Country Club, home of the US Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston.
Ben Stiller, Returning The Love
Over the past week, in the build-up to the final major championship of 2012, tennis stars such as Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have all connected with local New York communities to inspire a new generation of youngsters in an initiative with the US Open, ATP and WTA.
Japanese Major Record
There was an Open Era record four Japanese men – Tatsuma Ito, Hiroki Moriya, Kei Nishikori and Go Soeda – in the US Open first round this year. “It’s good to see all the Japanese players on tour, especially [at the] Grand Slams,” said Nishikori, after he beat Argentina’s Guido Andreozzi 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round. “Ito and Soeda are doing well, getting to Top 100 [of the South African Airways ATP Rankings] and almost getting to [the] Top 50. Hopefully one day tennis can be big. Soccer and baseball [are] still [the] two biggest sports. I hope I can be one of the [inspirations] to children wanting to start.” The most Japanese men to start at any Grand Slam championship since 1968 is five at 1973 Wimbledon.
Rainy Start, Late Night Finish
Thousands of spectators scurried for any semblance of cover they could find early on day one. This was no light drizzle. A tropical-like downpour caught fans off guard and many were drenched to the bone. Even fans, who had the foresight to bring umbrellas, scampered as fast as they could for any precious cover they could find. The rain began around 12.30 p.m. local time and caused a delay of just over two hours. As a result of the rain, many players were forced to toil late into the night. At 10 p.m. there were still six men’s matches in progress, and the clash between Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo and Somdev Devvarman was still a few minutes away from starting. Ramirez Hidalgo eventually won 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at close to 12:56 a.m. to end an eventual day's play.
Match Of The Day
Marin Cilic, the No. 12 seed from Croatia, fought back from a 0-2 sets deficit for just the second time in his career after he defeated Australian Marinko Matosevic 5-7, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in three hours and 57 minutes on Court 17. Cilic converted five of his 21 break point opportunities. His best US Open result came in 2009, when he reached the quarter-finals (l. to del Potro) having beaten Jesse Levine from 0-2 sets down in the second round. Matosevic, 27, is now 0-7 lifetime at major championships.
