Six-time champion Djokovic to face Tomic
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic begins his quest for a seventh title at the Miami Open presented by Itau on Friday night against Australian Bernard Tomic. American John Isner opens his title defence earlier in the day at Hard Rock Stadium with an afternoon match against Italian qualifier Lorenzo Sonego.
Isner, who came into Miami last year with a 2-6 record and at No. 17 in the ATP Rankings, has reached three semi-finals in his past four tournaments and plays the first men’s match on Stadium court against Sonego, who is facing a Top 10 opponent for the first time in his career. In the evening session on Stadium, Djokovic brings a 5-0 head-to-head record against Tomic, who is looking for his first victory against a World No. 1 (0-6 lifetime).
Austrian Dominic Thiem, who defeated Roger Federer in the BNP Paribas Open final on Sunday to win his first ATP Masters 1000 title, faces a challenge from Indian Wells quarter-finalist Hubert Hurkacz. Former Miami finalist Kei Nishikori kicks off the action on Grandstand with a noon match against Serbian Dusan Lajovic.

STATS OF THE DAY
Qualifiers went 6-6 in the first round with Radu Albot, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alexander Bublik, Reilly Opelka, Andrey Rublev and Lorenzo Sonego advancing to the second round. Lucky losers Daniel Evans and Mackenzie McDonald won their first round matches.
The 18-year-old Auger-Aliassime is the youngest #NextGenATP player in the second round.
Third seed Dominic Thiem won his 12th ATP Tour title in Indian Wells and he is the first Austrian to capture an ATP Masters 1000 crown since Thomas Muster won 1997 Miami (d. Bruguera).
Fabio Fognini, the No. 15 seed, who reached the semi-finals in Miami two years ago, is trying to break a five-match losing streak. He is 3-6 on the season.
Gael Monfils, the No. 16 seed, is off to a 15-3 start and last year he didn’t win his 15th and 16th matches until Roland Garros in late May.
Unseeded Mischa Zverev was 0-3 on the season and 0-4 in Miami before saving eight match points in the second set of his first-round win over [WC] Nicola Kuhn on Wednesday.
