Fabio Fognini continued his pursuit of a fourth tour-level title of the season on Friday, beating Matthew Ebden 6-4, 6-2 at the Chengdu Open.
The top seed, who has already lifted trophies in Sao Paulo, Bastad and Los Cabos this year, converted four of six break points to advance after 66 minutes. Competing at a career-high No. 13 in the ATP Rankings, Fognini improves to 39-18 this season. The 31-year-old is just three victories away from matching his best calendar year win total, achieved in 2013 (42-27).
Fognini will face Next Gen ATP Finals contender Taylor Fritz for a place in the championship match. Fritz notched his fifth victory in six matches at the event, beating countryman Sam Querrey 7-6(1), 7-5. Fognini, an eight-time tour-level titlist, and 21-year-old Fritz have never met at tour-level.

Fabio Fognini moved one win from Italian history at the Chengdu Open, beating #NextGenATP American Taylor Fritz 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-3 on Saturday.
The World No. 13, winner of three tour-level crowns this season, booked his place in his fourth final of the season after one hour and 49 minutes, winning 61 per cent of second-serve return points en route to victory. If Fognini adds the Chengdu trophy to his titles in Sao Paulo, Bastad and Los Cabos, the 31-year-old will become the first Italian on record to win four tour-level titles in one season.
"I am happy because it was a great match," said Fognini. "I returned really well and was moving better and better. I am happy to be in the final here in Chengdu."

With his 40th tour-level win of the season (40-18), Fognini, improves to 4-3 in semi-finals this year. Fognini owns an 8-9 record in championship matches at tour-level, but has won each of his three final appearances this season. The top-seeded Italian will face Joao Sousa or Bernard Tomic in Sunday's final. Fognini owns a 5-1 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Sousa and has won two of three FedEx ATP Head2Head clashes against Tomic.
"It is my best year so far. I am really happy that the first time I visit Chengdu, I am in my first final," said Fognini.
Fritz was bidding to reach his second ATP World Tour final (also 2016 Memphis) as he bids to qualify for November's Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan. The 21-year-old owns 19 wins from 33 tour-level matches this season.

Last week, Fognini ended a two-year doubles title drought in St. Petersburg. Fognini, on his team debut alongside countryman Matteo Berrettini, defeated defending champions Roman Jebavy and Matwe Middelkoop in the championship match.

Italy's Fabio Fognini, who has an outside chance of making his debut at the season-ending tournament, advanced 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 against Moldova's Radu Albot. Fognini is in 11th place in the Race, 1,405 points behind eighth-placed Kevin Anderson. Fognini will next face #NextGenATP Russian Andrey Rublev, who sped past Portugal's Joao Sousa 6-0, 6-4.
Fucsovics overcomes Cecchinato in other second-round clash
Fabio Fognini extended his recent run of form on Thursday, nullifying the firepower of Russia’s Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-3 for a place in the China Open quarter-finals. The fourth-seeded Italian broke #NextGenATP Rublev’s serve three times to record his 42nd match win of the season, which equals his career-best total of 2013.
The 31-year-old Fognini has lifted trophies this year at the Brasil Open in Sao Paulo (d. Jarry), the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad (d. Gasquet) and the Abierto de Tenis Mifel presentado por Cinemex in Los Cabos (d. Del Potro). He is the first Italian on record to win three titles in a season since both Corrado Barazzutti and Paolo Bertolucci in 1977. Last week, Fognini also finished runner-up at the Chengdu Open (l. to Tomic).
Fognini, who is currently in 11th position in the ATP Race To London, will next play Marton Fucsovics on Friday. Fucsovics won his first crown at the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open (d. Gojowczyk) in May.

Italian wins 43rd match of the year
Fabio Fognini experienced few problems on Friday in reaching the China Open semi-finals for the second time (also 2015). The fourth-seeded Italian, playing some of the best tennis of his career in 2018, overcame Marton Fucsovics of Hungary 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 39 minutes.
The victory gave 31-year-old Fognini his 43rd match win of the year (43-19), bettering his previous-best tally of 42-27 in 2013. So far this season, he has lifted three ATP World Tour trophies — at the Brasil Open in Sao Paulo (d. Jarry), the SkiStar Swedish Open (d. Gasquet) and at the Abierto de Tenis Mifel presentado por Cinemex in Los Cabos (d. Del Potro) — from four final (also runner-up at last week’s Shenzhen Open, losing to Bernard Tomic).
Fognini withstood three break point against Fucsovics in his first service game and broke for a 3-2 advantage in the 47-minute first set. Fognini opened up a 5-2 lead in the second set, but could not convert two match point chances and was broken.
Fognini will continue his quest to become the first Italian man to clinch four singles trophies in a single season against top-seeded Argentina Juan Martin del Potro, who earned a spot at the Nitto ATP Finals in November on Wednesday. Del Potro swept past Filip Krajinovic of Serbia in the second quarter-final of the day.

Elsewhere, fifth-seeded Briton Kyle Edmund defeated qualifier Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-3, 7-6(4) in one hour and 33 minutes for a place in the semi-final of an ATP World Tour 500 tournament for the second time (also 2017 Erste Bank Open 500 in Vienna). He awaits the winner of Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili and Malek Jaziri of Tunisia.
Fabio on Fire: Up to 1,750 points are at stake over the final three weeks of the regular season, giving both Isner and Fognini an outside shot in the ATP Race to London. After becoming the first Italian in 41 years to win three titles in a single season, Fognini hopes to become the first Italian on record to win four titles in a year. He was within a point of doing so at Chengdu on 30 September.
In other action, No. 2 seed Fabio Fognini ousted Slovakian Lukas Lacko 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 28 minutes to reach the last eight. It has been a strong season for the Italian, who has already claimed three titles.
Fognini, who is one spot off his career-best ATP Ranking of No. 14, began the year with five ATP World Tour trophies. He will try to make his ninth semi-final of 2018 when he plays reigning Next Gen ATP Finals champion Hyeon Chung on Friday in the pair’s first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting.
He’ll now play second seed Fabio Fognini for the first time. Fognini, who is currently No. 12 in the ATP Race To London, for one of the three remaining spots at the eight-man Nitto ATP Finals, was leading 7-5, 2-1 after 54 minutes of play when sixth-seeded South Korean Hyeon Chung retired due to a right foot injury. Fognini has won a career-best three titles this season, and is trying to become the first Italian on record to win four tour-level crowns in one year.
