Adelaide To Host Combined ATP & WTA Tournament From 2020
Spoiler:
SA Government commits $10 million to Memorial Drive Centre Courts Redevelopment
Adelaide will host some of the world’s best tennis stars in 2020 with a new week-long ATP and WTA combined tennis tournament set to take place at Memorial Drive.
The tournament, which is subject to ATP and WTA approval, is expected to attract more than 120 of the world’s top singles and doubles players and offer a minimum of $2 million in total prize money.
Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley and Tennis SA President Kent Thiele and CEO Steven Baldas were joined by SA Premier Steven Marshall and SA Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing Corey Wingard MP for the announcement today.
A $10 million SA Government commitment to the Memorial Drive Centre Courts Redevelopment has enabled Adelaide to host the event. Stage One of the project will include:
• A new woven fibreglass membrane fabric roof covering the existing stands and centre courts
• Four refurbished ITF standard Plexicushion match courts
• New fencing and lighting
• Improved access between the centre and outside courts during tournaments.

Craig Tiley said Tennis Australia had a vision for the future of the Australian tennis summer which would see the global tennis season launched each year in more cities across the country.
“It’s important for us to continually improve on the great tennis offering we have in Australia to ensure there are more opportunities for players, more opportunities for fans to get to see them in their home towns and more global exposure for our sport,” Mr Tiley said.
“A major part of that vision is delivering more world-class tennis to capital cities around Australia which is what this tournament will help do. It is a vital piece in our vision to ultimately grow tennis and provide inspiration for future generations,” he continued.
Tennis SA CEO Steven Baldas said the new tournament in Adelaide and improved facilities at Memorial Drive will help attract new fans to the sport.
"The redevelopment of Memorial Drive and the securing of a week-long WTA and ATP combined tournament is extremely exciting for tennis in South Australia,” Mr Baldas said.
"We have a long tennis history in Adelaide and the upgrades to the facilities announced today by the Premier and Minister Wingard will help us connect to a whole new generation of fans across the country and the globe by providing a new source of inspiration for young athletes to choose our sport.”

Zhuhai To Host ATP Tour Event In 2019
Spoiler:
Hengqin Tennis Center will showcase world's best players
China will host a new ATP Tour event in September, with the city of Zhuhai serving as host for the Zhuhai Open from 23-29 September.
The 250-level event, offering US $1,000,000 in prize money, will be held at the custom-designed, state-of-the-art Hengqin Tennis Center. It will be played the week before the China Open in Beijing and joins the Chengdu Open as the opening stops of the three-week Asian swing held in September and October.
“On behalf of the ATP, we welcome the city of Zhuhai to the ATP Tour in 2019,” said Alison Lee, ATP International Executive Vice President. “I am sure the players will enjoy their time in the city and playing at the magnificent Hengqin Tennis Center.”
Zhuhai has held an ATP Challenger Tour event in March for the past three years at the Hengqin Tennis Center. The Challenger began as a $50,000 event in 2016 and was upgraded last year to a $75,000 event.

Zhuhai is located on the southern coast of China, at the heart of the Greater Bay Area and near Hong Kong and Macau. It has been selected as “China’s Most Livable City” by the Chinese Academy of Social Services since 2015. The Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai bridge was opened in October 2018, making Zhuhai directly and easily accessible by road from Hong Kong.
"With the opening of the new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, it is easier for players traveling from Hong Kong to Zhuhau," said Tournament Director Leon Sun. "As the only ATP Tour tournament in Southern China, we warmly welcome all the fans, including from Hong Kong and Macau, to enjoy great tennis in this new and modern venue. We look forward to seeing you there in September."
"Huafa Sports is excited to present a first-class ATP Tour event, providing high-quality services to players, officials, sponsors and tennis fans locally and afar. A grand and colourful tennis carnival will be staged in Zhuhai in September," said Peter LV, Executive Director of Huafa Sports, the tournament promoter and operator. "Since 2015, Zhuhai has started its endeavour in promoting tennis both at the professional and amateur level...and has garnered a stellar reputation in event operation and management, with strong support from the local government and local tournament promoter Huafa Group. The Zhuhai Open will become a new boost for local tennis development and undoubtedly a highlight on the ATP Tour."
Inaugural ATP Cup and Doha will open the new season
The ATP has announced the release of its 2020 ATP Tour calendar, a season featuring 63 ATP tournaments across 29 countries, in addition to the four Grand Slams, as well as the introduction of the ATP Cup at the start of the year for the first time. The full 2020 ATP Tour calendar can be viewed here.
The 2020 season will kick off with the inaugural ATP Cup, a new team event that has been strategically integrated into the calendar to serve as a major launch to the ATP season. The ATP Cup will take place as a 10-day event in parallel across three Australian cities - Sydney, Brisbane, and one additional city to be announced in due course. The players’ team event, held in partnership with Tennis Australia, will feature 24 countries competing for US$15 million in prize money, the biggest prize purse of any ATP tournament on the calendar, and a maximum of 750 ATP Rankings points at stake.
Other changes in the calendar include:
- The ATP 250 event in Pune, India, moving from week 1 to week 5 in the ATP calendar, alongside Montpellier and Cordoba.
- The ATP 250 event in Sofia, Bulgaria, moving from week 5 to week 39 in the ATP calendar, alongside Chengdu and Zhuhai.
- The 2020 season also sees the return of Adelaide in week 2 of the ATP calendar for the first time since 2008.
- ATP has an open application in process for an ATP 250 grass court event in Europe to take place the week before Wimbledon, currently held in Antalya.
The season will culminate with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Nitto ATP Finals, first held in Tokyo in 1970, as The O2 in London hosts the season finale for a twelfth consecutive year.
“The 2020 ATP Tour calendar will provide a global stage for the world’s greatest players to battle over 11 months for prestigious ATP titles, coveted ATP rankings points, and the ultimate prize of finishing the season as year-end ATP Tour No.1,” said Chris Kermode, ATP Executive Chairman & President. “2020 will also see the launch of the ATP Cup, an event that has all the ingredients to become something very special at start of the season, and we look forward to seeing it come to fruition through our partnership with Tennis Australia.”
In addition, all ATP tournaments on the 2020 calendar will feature the Shot Clock, one of many innovations stemming from the award-winning Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, a tournament that will continue to serve as a platform to trial innovations and promote the future stars of the sport.
The ATP Tour has attracted record audiences on site, on television and online in recent years with more than 4.5 million fans attending tournaments, and almost 1 billion viewers tuning in throughout the season.

Koniec Pucharu Hopmana w Perth. ITF szuka nowej lokalizacji

Wezmą w nich udział 24 drużyny, a w puli nagród będzie 15 mln dolarów.

- Rozmawiamy z potencjalnymi partnerami i zdecydujemy, kiedy i gdzie będzie on rozgrywany.
Z kolei w sezonie 2015 najlepsi byli tutaj Polacy Agnieszka Radwańska i Jerzy Janowicz. Teraz organizatorom nie będzie łatwo wybrać odpowiedniego terminu, który zachęci największe gwiazdy kobiecego i męskiego tenisa do rywalizacji w nieoficjalnych mistrzostwach świata drużyn mieszanych.
British tennis suffers blow as ATP Finals 2020 likely to be the last staged in London
Spoiler:
British tennis is on the verge of losing one of its biggest assets, as the Association of Tennis Professionals prepares to shift the ATP Finals out of London after a 12-year stay. Barring a late change of heart, the 2020 event will be the last staged at the O2 Arena.
After a nine-month tender process, The Daily Telegraph understands that ATP executives are likely to rule out another extension – which would be the fourth – to the hosting agreement for the O2. Turin is the favourite to win the new five-year deal; Tokyo is also seen as a strong contender.
The loss would not have a direct financial impact on the British game, as all proceeds go to the ATP. But the visibility of this event has been huge, with both the BBC and Sky Sports running live TV coverage. The finals have demonstrated to a British audience that there is more to tennis than Wimbledon.
The tournament has been played in 14 different cities since its inception in 1970, and the pressure for change had been building. Novak Djokovic, who is now the head of the ATP player council, has been calling for a move since 2014. His restlessness was only held at bay by London’s profitability. The finals brought in 15 per cent of the ATP’s revenues, which stood at $144 million (£110 million) in the last financial year.
Italian sources have reported that Turin’s mayor, Chiara Appendino, may offer an annual guarantee of €15 million over the five years of the contract.
Meanwhile, on court here, a tetchy Djokovic delivered a spectacular racket smash, and suffered four straight breaks of serve, in the course of an unconvincing 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber. The world No 1 later ascribed his struggle to “rust”.

I proszę, Turyn.
Nieźle sobie poczynają - najpierw Ronaldo, teraz finały ATP.

Federer, Djokovic React To ATP Finals Moving To Turin
Spoiler:
The announcement that Turin, Italy, will host the ATP Finals from 2021-2025 has been met with excitement from the biggest names in tennis. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Kevin Anderson, Borna Coric and Fabio Fognini all expressed their support for the year-end championships moving to Pala Altipour Stadium, Italy’s biggest indoor sporting arena.
“Exciting new chapter for the ATP Tour,” wrote Federer on Facebook. Djokovic, World No. 1 and President of the ATP Player Council, said in a statement that the ATP Finals is “a tournament that has historically moved around and so I’m very excited to see it move to Turin from 2021. It’s still a few years away but I know that the players will be very excited to compete there, and I also hope to be part of what will be a very special event.”

Fognini, Italy’s top-ranked player, said the country will take advantage of the chance to host another major sporting event and rally behind the ATP Finals.
"This moment for Italian tennis is quite good. We have the most important tournament of the year here in Italy,” said Fognini. “I played at the ATP Finals for doubles [in 2015] and everyone is happy to be there and enjoy it. I’m happy that our country gets a chance to improve what is already the best tournament of the year.”
Anderson, who reached the semi-finals in his ATP Finals debut last year, tweeted that “last year was one of the best moments of my career so far. Congrats to Turin and hopefully I get to play there some (or all) of those years."
Season finale to move from London, the tournament city since 2009
The ATP announced today that the city of Turin, Italy, has been selected to host the ATP Finals from 2021-2025. The five-year agreement will see the world’s greatest players in men’s professional tennis compete for the biggest indoor tennis title in the world at Turin’s Pala Alpitour stadium, Italy’s largest indoor sporting arena.
The winning Turin bid was put together by the Italian Tennis Federation and Sport e Salute SpA in partnership with the Italian Government, the municipality of Turin and Regione Piemonte. The move to Turin brings the ATP Finals to Italy for the first time in its 50-year history and makes Turin the 15th city to host the prestigious season-ending tournament since its inception in 1970.
Chris Kermode, ATP Executive Chairman & President, said: “Our congratulations to Turin on putting together such a comprehensive and impressive bid. Italy provides us with one of the strongest and most established tennis markets in Europe and has a proven track record for hosting world class tennis events with the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, as well as the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan.
We’re delighted to expand on our successful partnership with the FIT and Sport e Salute SpA and we look forward to bringing the ATP’s flagship season-ending event to tennis’s growing fanbase in Italy for the first time.

“The success of the ATP Finals is critical to the health of the ATP and we believe that Turin has all the ingredients to take the event to new heights and to continue the tournament’s growth following a highly successful 12-year stint in London that will come to an end in 2020. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our event partners in London, particularly AEG, and all the fans that have made the tournament such a success at The O2 since 2009.”
Novak Djokovic, World No.1 and President of the ATP Player Council, said: “The ATP Finals is the biggest and most prestigious event that we have at the ATP. It’s a tournament that has historically moved around and so I’m very excited to see it move to Turin from 2021. It’s still a few years away but I know that the players will be very excited to compete there, and I also hope to be part of what will be a very special event.”
Chiara Appendino, Mayor of Turin, said: "We are extremely proud that Turin has been chosen to host the ATP Finals 2021-2025 as sport has long been a significant part of the history and the culture of our city. As a City we will come together to harness the knowhow of a vast range of local experts in organizing international sporting events and we are confident that our unique combination of passion and experience will deliver opportunities to appreciate this exhilarating sport in sustainable and innovative ways. Turin looks forward to building a truly spectacular event for players and fans the world over!"
Angelo Binaghi, President of the Italian Tennis Federation, said: “The assignment of the great task to organize the ATP Finals in Turin from 2021 to 2025 represents a remarkable international success of our country. Our project has proved to be extremely successful thanks to the great work carried out together with the Italian Government and the local authorities. A team work which I am sure will live up to the wonderful tradition of the end-of-season historical Masters, and offer a very brilliant future”.
The unique season-ending tournament, featuring only the world’s best eight qualified singles players and doubles teams of the season, will boast a record prize purse of US$14,500,000 in 2021.
Turin was the first capital city of Italy from 1861 to 1865. The city has hosted some of the world’s biggest sporting events, such as the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, and is also home to two Serie A football teams, Juventus FC and Torino FC. The ATP’s decision brings to a close an extensive international bid process that began in August 2018 in which more than 40 cities worldwide expressed an interest in hosting the ATP season finale.
An official presentation with representatives from ATP, FIT, Italian government and City of Torino will take place in Turin on Monday 29th April at 12:30PM at Palazzo Madama, Piazza Castello.
