Seventh seed next plays Karatsev or Van Assche
Andrey Rublev became the first men’s player to reach the second round at Wimbledon on Monday when he moved past Australian Max Purcell 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
The seventh seed struck the ball with relentless power throughout the one-hour, 33-minute clash and battled hard in the second set, rallying from 2-5 in the second set. With his 32nd win of the season, Rublev maintained his perfect first-round record at Wimbledon.
“I am really happy to be back. You always want to win in straight sets, but it is never simple,” Rublev said. “I was 2-5 down in the second set and I was lucky to be able to come back because in my head I was already preparing for the third set. I hit a few good shots and I was able to come back and I played really well at the end of the second set. To play here with full stadiums at 11am, that is a special feeling.”
Rublev, whose best result at SW19 was a fourth-round run in 2021, will next meet Aslan Karatsev or #NextGenATP Frenchman Luca Van Assche. The 25-year-old arrived in London in strong form, having advanced to the title match in Halle last month.
Andrey Rublev dug deep to bring up a major milestone Thursday at Wimbledon, where the seventh seed defeated Aslan Karatsev 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 for his 50th Grand Slam match win.
Rublev reacted well after dropping the first set to seal a two-hour, 52-minute second-round victory against the World No. 50 Karatsev on Court 2. The 25-year-old claimed the only break of serve in each of the second and third sets before overcoming a late wobble on serve to level the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series at 1-1.
Rublev was broken by Karatsev when serving for the match at 5-4 in the fourth set, but made no mistake the second time around at 6-5 to advance to the third round at Wimbledon for the second time. His opponent as he bids to equal his personal-best showing at the grass-court major, a fourth-round run from 2021, will be wild card David Goffin or qualifier Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera.
Fourth seed Casper Ruud was unable to join his fellow Top 10 star Rublev in the third round after an inspired Centre Court display from home wild card Liam Broady. The Briton delighted the home fans with a stunning final two sets to seal a 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory and reach the third round for the second consecutive year.
Seventh seed will meet Djokovic or Hurkacz in last eight
Andrey Rublev recovered from squandering two match points in the fourth set to fight off a valiant Alexander Bublik Sunday and reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time.
The World No. 7 was in firm control of the match after winning the opening two sets. But Bublik claimed the third and fourth sets in tie-breaks and kept the 25-year-old on the backfoot with massive serving before Rublev roared back to win 7-5, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-7(5) 6-4 after three hours and 17 minutes.
Rublev, who fired 20 aces to Bublik's 39, will next face the winner of seven-time champion Novak Djokovic and Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.
Shot Of The Year? Rublev Stuns McEnroe With 'Most Lucky Shot Ever'
Spoiler:
Rublev makes critical dive deep in fifth set against Bublik
Andrey Rublev hit one of the best shots of the year to help close out Alexander Bublik in a five-set, fourth-round thriller on Sunday at Wimbledon.
Serving at 5-4 in the fifth set with a 30/15 lead, Rublev pushed Bublik deep into the backhand corner. The Kazakhstani responded with a laser-like backhand up the line and an accompanying roar, thinking his shot would be a clean winner.
Rublev stunned Bublik and the Centre Court crowd by hitting a diving forehand squash shot into the open court for a winner. It was a critical moment, since he took a 40/15 advantage rather than allowing Bublik within two points of breaking back.
“Probably it was the most lucky shot ever,” Rublev said in his on-court interview. “It just was luck, nothing else. I don’t think that I can do it one more time.”
