Denis Shapovalov will make his US Open debut after emerging from qualifying
Denis Shapovalov headlined a group of 16 players to qualify at the US Open on Friday, continuing his dominant run of form with a 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jan Satral.
Shapovalov will make his US Open debut on the heels of an ATP Challenger Tour title in Gatineau and semi-final run at the Coupe Rogers in Montreal, where he became the youngest player to reach the last four of an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event. The 18-year-old Canadian has now won 15 of his last 17 matches in total and will look to extend the run against fellow #NextGenATP Daniil Medvedev in the first round.
"I got fired up after I lost the first set," Shapovalov told ATPWorldTour.com. "It really motivated me and it helped me with my confidence. I raised my level from there and was playing some good tennis in the second and third sets.
"It feels incredible. I dream to play in these big tournaments, so to be able to qualify for one of the Grand Slams is a really big privilege for me."
A trio of Americans earned main draw berths on Friday. Veteran Tim Smyczek will make his fifth main draw appearance in six years at Flushing Meadows, defeating Peter Polansky 6-3, 6-4. Chicago native Evan King qualified for his first Grand Slam main draw at the age of 25, stunning Michael Mmoh 6-3, 6-3. King had earned his first ATP World Tour match win in Los Cabos earlier this month. University of Virginia standout JC Aragone turned in the Cinderella performance of the qualifying competition, claiming three three-set victories in his tour-level debut. He defeated Akira Santillan 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 on Friday.
All three Americans will be made to work in the first round of main draw play, with Smyczek opening against 17th seed Sam Querrey, King facing 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta and Aragone battling 28th seed Kevin Anderson.

In other action, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe will make his first appearance in a Grand Slam since the 2013 Australian Open, continuing his impressive comeback to the tour. He ousted Alejandro Gonzalez 6-2, 6-4 in 74 minutes. The World No. 106 is on the brink of returning to the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings for the first time in five years. He opens against Nicolas Kicker of Argentina.
Stebe is coming off an ATP Challenger Tour crown in Vancouver on Sunday and is joined by another recent titlist, Binghamton champ Cameron Norrie, in qualifying for the last Grand Slam of the year. Norrie did not drop a set all week in booking his US Open debut, sealing it with a 6-1, 7-6(5) win over Go Soeda. Dmitry Tursunov awaits in the first round.
Nicolas Mahut will appear in his seventh consecutive US Open main draw and 12th overall, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-0. The 2015 doubles champion, with Pierre-Hugues Herbert, will battle Marton Fucsovics in the first round.
Other qualifiers include Maximilian Marterer, Radu Albot, Vaclav Safranek, Mikhail Kukushkin, Stefano Travaglia, Adrian Menendez-Maceiras, Vincent Millot, John-Patrick Smith and Darian King. King will be the first player from Barbados to compete in a Grand Slam. Fourth seed Alexander Zverev is his first round opponent.
Despite falling to Marterer, top seed Leonardo Mayer earned a spot in the main draw as a lucky loser. He opens against 26th seed Richard Gasquet.

NEW YORK -- Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have never met at the US Open in their storied rivalry, and Nadal would like to keep it that way.

The top-seeded Nadal admits he'd rather not face the third-seeded Federer in what would be a potential dream semifinal at the US Open. Federer has taken the past four meetings against Nadal, including an epic five-set Australian Open final earlier this year.

"If I am in semifinals, not, I prefer to play against another one," Nadal said when asked if he wanted to face Federer in the semifinals. "Is obvious, no? I am not that way [to want the matchup]. Sounds very good, but the real thing, I prefer to play against another player, an easier one if it's possible."

For the first time since 2010, Rafael Nadal is seeded No. 1 at the US Open. Karolina Pliskova is making her debut as the top-seeded woman at any Grand Slam tournament.
The honest Nadal cracked a smile.

"I know you want to hear the other way, that I would love to play with him," Nadal said. "No, of course I understand that [it's] gonna be great for our history. Is true that we played in all [the other] Grand Slam finals. We never played here and for sure this year we are not going to play in finals. Finals are more special than semifinals, in that case."

The two have faced each other 37 times but never in Flushing. While Nadal says a first-ever US Open duel with Federer would be something "amazing," the Spaniard would like to avoid what could be a mentally and physically taxing meeting against Federer for the right to play in the final.

Federer, though, would love to face his rival for the first time in New York. The two have played each other multiple times at the other three slams.

"I mean, I'd be happy to play him here," said Federer, who is pursuing his 20th Grand Slam title. "We never played here in New York, so I think that would be fun for everybody involved. I mean, there is, like, I don't know, 60-plus players in between us that don't agree in our section that we should make it to the semis. We have our work cut out there."

"But, you know, I'd love to play Rafa here in New York," Federer continued. "Hopefully it will be a night session. Hopefully that would be a great atmosphere and one again where we play great like at the Australian Open."

After missing last year's US Open due to injury, Federer enters this year's Open hoping to stay healthy. Federer "tweaked" his back at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, where he lost in the final to Alexander Zverev. He pulled out of the Western & Southern Open due to the back injury.

Federer, who won the Australian and Wimbledon titles and is 35-3 this year, says his back is feeling good after the rest and getting in some practice sets the past few days. On Saturday morning, Federer moved well although he didn't have to overexert himself much during the practice session.


"Look, two weeks after the [Montreal] finals is a long time, so because you've got two weeks you can take your time, you know," said Federer, who has five US Open titles but has not won here since 2008. "So the first week was really just, you know, trying to feel better, get better, get back on the court at some stage. I have been on the practice courts since last week.

"I have been playing sets the last few days, and I'm really happy how I'm feeling, you know, few days out of the first round here now."

Nadal will be seeking his third Open title. While he is 23-14 all time against Federer, he'd like to avoid what the fans want to happen.

"Anyway, meeting him here in semifinals with Roger, if that happens that will be something great and amazing," Nadal said. "But as I say before, we made a lot [before]."

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal has been drawn in the same half of the US Open draw as Roger Federer, who, alongside Andy Murray, could rise to the top of the Emirates ATP Rankings after the conclusion of the final Grand Slam championship of the year. The draw ceremony took part at the US Open Experience in the Seaport District of Manhattan on Friday.
Two-time former champion Nadal could meet Grigor Dimitrov, the recent Western & Southern Open titlist, or David Goffin in the quarter-finals prior to a semi-final showdown against Federer, who is bidding to capture his sixth US Open crown. Nadal and Federer have never met at the US Open, and while Nadal leads 23-14 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, Federer has won their past four clashes – including three hard-court meetings in 2017 at the Australian Open, the BNP Paribas Open and the Miami Open presented by Itau.

Top seed Nadal, who has a 46-10 record in New York City, including the 2010 and 2013 crowns, will face Serbian’s Dusan Lajovic in the first set and could potentially face No. 26 seed Richard Gasquet in the third round and No. 15 seed Tomas Berdych in the fourth round. The Spanish superstar, who picked up his 15th Grand Slam championship trophy at Roland Garros in June, has an ATP World Tour leading 49-9 record on the season.
Third seed Federer, who competes in the Big Apple for the first time since 2015 when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final, plays #NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe in the first round. Nick Kyrgios, the recent Cincinnati runner-up and No. 14 seed, or No. 17 seed Sam Querrey, enjoying a career-best year, pose a threat in the fourth round. Sixth seed Dominic Thiem, who opens against wild card Alex de Minaur, or No. 24 seed and 2009 titlist Juan Martin del Potro could be a potential quarter-final opponent for Federer.
The Swiss superstar, who has the best winning percentage on hard courts (23-2, .920) this year of any player according to the FedEx ATP Performance Zone, is seeking to lift a third major trophy this year to add to his Australian Open and Wimbledon runs. If he does so on 10 September, it would mark Federer’s 20th Grand Slam championship crown.
Second seed Andy Murray, who captured the 2012 title (d. Djokovic), will be competing for the first time since a Wimbledon quarter-final exit to Sam Querrey. Murray, who is 44-11 overall at the final major of the year, faces Tennys Sandgren first up, while No. 16 seed Lucas Pouille or a resurgent No. 21 seed David Ferrer may be a potential fourth round opponent. Eighth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 2011, 2015-16 quarter-finalist, who meets Marius Copil in the fourth round, could pose a threat to Murray in the last eight.
Fourth seed Alexander Zverev, the first player to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan from 7-11 November, starts against a qualifier and may face No. 28 seed Kevin Anderson in the third round. Jack Sock, the No. 13 seed, who reached the Last 16 in 2016, will be hoping to continue a strong season that includes two ATP World Tour titles. The American or No. 19 seed Gilles Muller could face Zverev, a winner of two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crowns in 2017, in the fourth round. Fifth seed Marin Cilic, the 2014 titlist with a 27-7 record in New York City, also features in Zverev’s quarter of the draw and takes on Gilles Simon in the first round.
