Daniil Medvedev notched his maiden clay-court win of 2022 with a quickfire 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 win over Facundo Bagnis at Roland Garros on Tuesday.
It was a comfortable first-round victory for the second seed in Paris as he attempts to settle on the clay this year after missing the bulk of the European spring schedule on the surface due to a hernia procedure.
Although an immediate exchange of breaks on Court Suzanne Lenglen suggested a potentially intriguing encounter, it proved to be smooth sailing for 26-year-old Medvedev against the World No. 103 Bagnis. The Argentine appeared to be struggling physically but Medvedev will nonetheless be pleased with the clinical nature of his performance. He struck 35 winners and broke the Bagnis serve eight times in a routine one-hour, 38-minute win.

Medvedev had not won a match at Roland Garros in four attempts prior to his 2021 quarter-final run, which included victories over Reilly Opelka and Cristian Garin before ending with defeat to eventual finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas.
He has had little time to prepare for this year’s campaign at the clay-court Grand Slam. Medvedev only returned to the Tour a week ago at the Gonet Geneva Open, where he suffered an opening-round loss to Richard Gasquet. The World No. 2 will be pleased to have another match under his belt as he seeks to maintain his excellent recent record at major championships. He has reached the final at three of the past six Grand Slams and picked up his first Slam title at the 2021 US Open.

Medvedev has extra motivation for a strong run in Paris. Should he reach the final, he will return to No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, although not until 13 June, a week after the tournament ends, when ranking points from last year's edition of Roland Garros drop.
Second seed next faces Kecmanovic or Bublik
Daniil Medvedev continued to build momentum at Roland Garros on Thursday, overcoming Serbian Laslo Djere 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the third round in Paris.
The second seed missed the majority of the European clay-court swing due to a hernia procedure and lost in the first round in Geneva last week on his return to the ATP Tour. However, he has produced consistent and patient performances in his opening two matches in Paris, in what is his sixth appearance in the French capital.
The 26-year-old, who eliminated Facundo Bagnis in the first round, was resilient against Djere throughout their two-hour, 36-minute clash on Court Philippe Chatrier. Medvedev soaked up the World No. 56’s powerful forehand as he scampered around the baseline, while he turned the tables in points by standing deep in the court and taking large cuts at the ball.
Following his win, Medvedev has levelled his ATP Head2Head series with Djere at 1-1 and will next face 28th seed Miomir Kecmanovic or Alexander Bublik.
The 13-time tour-level champion, who is still searching for his first title of the season, will return to No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings should he reach the final in Paris. However, not until 13 June, a week after the tournament ends, when ranking points from last year's edition of Roland Garros drop. Medvedev enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals at the second Grand Slam of the season in 2021.

The World No. 2 recovered from losing his serve in the first game of the match by rolling off five straight games from 0-2 to take control. Medvedev was content to soak up pressure with his flat groundstrokes and found first serves when it mattered, saving break points in the seventh and ninth games to move ahead.
Medvedev continued to find his range in the second set as he outlasted the Serbian in the longer exchanges, with Djere unable to capitalise on his chances. Medvedev then won a 16-minute game to break the 26-year-old at the start of the third set before he raced away to victory as he drew further errors from Djere.
Djere, who defeated Ricardas Berankis in his opening match, was aiming to reach the third round at Roland Garros for the third time, having advanced to that stage in 2019 and 2021.
