A thrilling 2023 Mutua Madrid Open saw Carlos Alcaraz successfully defend his title, although the Spaniard needed three sets to hold off lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff in the championship match. Struff is one of a number of stars who made a big jump in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings as a result of their exploits at the clay-court ATP Masters 1000.

No. 28 Jan-Lennard Struff, +37 (Career High)
The big-hitting German made history in Madrid by becoming the first lucky loser to reach the final at an ATP Masters 1000, and he has jumped 37 spots to a career-high No. 28 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings as a result. After falling to Aslan Karatsev in qualifying, Struff made full use of his second chance in the Spanish capital, battling to five three-set victories before pushing Alcaraz the distance in the championship match.
No. 16 Borna Coric, +4
The 26-year-old Coric reached his maiden Madrid semi-final, ousting 12th seed Hubert Hurkacz and home favourite Alejandro Davidovich Fokina en route. Although Alcaraz proved too strong in the final four, Coric has risen four spots to No. 16 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, his highest position since October 2010 and just four places shy of his career high.
No. 42 Andy Murray, +10
The former World No. 1 Murray has returned to the Top 50 for the first time since January thanks to his title run at the ATP Challenger Tour 175 event in Aix-en-Provence. Murray downed World No. 17 Tommy Paul in the final to clinch his first trophy at any level since his ATP 250 triumph in Antwerp in 2019.

No. 53 Aslan Karatsev, +68
Karatsev has charged up the Pepperstone ATP Rankings after an inspired run to the semi-finals in Madrid, where his free-hitting performances proved too strong for seeded players Botic van de Zandschulp, Alex de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev. Only the second qualifier in tournament history to reach the semi-finals, the 29-year-old has jumped 68 spots to No. 53 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.
No. 69 Zhang Zhizhen, +30
Zhang etched his name into the Chinese tennis history books by becoming the first man from his nation to reach the quarter-finals at an ATP Masters 1000. Upset wins against Denis Shapovalov, Cameron Norrie and Taylor Fritz were the highlights of his run, one which propels the 26-year-old 30 spots to a career-high No. 69 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.
Other Notable Top 100 Movers
No. 9 Taylor Fritz, +1
No. 11 Karen Khachanov, +1
No. 35 Ben Shelton, +3 (Career High)
No. 38 Bernabe Zapata Miralles, +4 (Career High)
No. 49 Alexander Bublik, +6
No. 50 Ugo Humbert, +27
No. 65 Daniel Altmaier, +27
No. 99 Matteo Arnaldi, +6 (Career High)
3) No. 1 Update: Djokovic will compete at the Foro Italico as the No. 1 player in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, but he will not leave the tournament in top spot. Alcaraz will return to World No. 1 by playing his first match in Rome. As defending champion, Djokovic can at best remain on 6,775 points, so Alcaraz has an opportunity to gain a healthy advantage with another big week in Italy.
Alcaraz Poised To Reclaim World No. 1; Can He Extend Lead Over Djokovic?
Spoiler:
Spaniard can leave Rome with 7,770 Pepperstone ATP Ranking points
When Carlos Alcaraz plays the first point of his match on Saturday against Albert Ramos-Vinolas at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, the 20-year-old Spaniard will clinch his return to No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.
Novak Djokovic arrived in Rome with a five-point lead over Alcaraz. However, Djokovic is the defending champion and will drop 1,000 points on 22 May. Alcaraz is not defending any points, and he will earn 10 by beginning his opening match in the Italian capital. That has already put him atop the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings.
Alcaraz will therefore begin his 23rd week at World No. 1 on 22 May. The Spaniard has a big opportunity to leave Rome with a sizable lead. If the 20-year-old wins the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, he will depart Italy with at least a 1,395-point advantage over Djokovic.

2) Novak Djokovic 5,785 6,775
3) Daniil Medvedev 5,340 6,330
4) Casper Ruud 4,575 5,565
5) Stefanos Tsitsipas 4,390 5,380
Djokovic can keep the battle close if he wins his seventh Rome title. The Serbian can finish the tournament with 6,775 points, which would keep him within 595 points of Alcaraz if the Spaniard reaches the final.
The 35-year-old’s grip on World No. 2 is not secure, though. Daniil Medvedev can climb to 6,330 points by winning the title on his least-favourite surface. That would force Djokovic to reach the final to remain World No. 2.
That will be a crucial battle for Roland Garros seeding. Alcaraz is in position to take the first seed in Paris, but the seeds below him are up for grabs.
Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas also have an opportunity to potentially move into the world's top three by winning the title in Rome, depending on Medvedev's performance. Neither man can pass Djokovic.

How Alcaraz's Loss Changes The Battle For World No. 1
Spoiler:
Djokovic can pull within 40 points with Rome title
Carlos Alcaraz’s early exit from the Internazionali BNL d’Italia has repercussions beyond the Rome ATP Masters 1000 event. It also could have a big effect on the battle for No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.
The Spaniard will return to World No. 1 next Monday, but instead of departing the Foro Italico with a sizable advantage, Alcaraz may be left with only a narrow lead if Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev push on to have deep runs in the Italian capital.
Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings

1) Carlos Alcaraz 6,815 6,815
2) Novak Djokovic 5,865 6,775
3) Daniil Medvedev 5,420 6,330
If Djokovic and Medvedev both lose in the fourth round on Tuesday, Alcaraz will lead Djokovic by 950 points and Medvedev by 1,395 points.
But both stars can claim plenty of points on the Italian clay. Djokovic, a six-time Rome champion, can reach 6,775 points by the end of the tournament, which would bring him within 40 of Alcaraz’s 6,815.
Since both men lost in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last year and will therefore drop the same number of points (360), that would set up an epic World No. 1 battle in Paris.
But do not count out Medvedev, either. The former World No. 1 has admitted to feeling more comfortable than ever in recent weeks on clay. The 27-year-old would reach 6,330 points with a title in Rome, putting him 485 points behind Alcaraz.
The Official App Of Tennis | Download ATP WTA Live App
Medvedev reached the fourth round at Roland Garros last year, so he will drop 180 points, which would bring him within 305 points of the Spaniard in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings when play begins in Paris. With the North American summer hard-court season still to come, Medvedev would be in good position to make a charge for No. 1 in the weeks and months ahead.
If Djokovic reaches the Rome final, Medvedev cannot pass him for World No. 2 next Monday. If the Serbian does not, the World No. 3 will have an opportunity to ascend one spot. At the same time, a maiden ATP Masters 1000 title for Casper Ruud could propel the Norwegian to World No. 3 depending on Medvedev’s results.
Nothing that happens the rest of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia can stop Alcaraz from returning to World No. 1. But Djokovic and Medvedev can make the coming weeks even more interesting in that battle with a deep run in Rome.
It is also worth keeping an eye on the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin, which serves as a barometre for the year-end No. 1 battle. Alcaraz is first with 3,455 points, but Medvedev (3,390 points) can take his spot with a win over Alexander Zverev or J.J. Wolf on Tuesday evening. Djokovic (2,655 points) would need to win the title to pass Alcaraz's point total.

How Medvedev's Return To World No. 2 Can Shake Up Roland Garros Draw
Spoiler:
Medvedev climbs after triumphing in Rome for first clay-court title
Daniil Medvedev will return to No. 2 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings on Monday after defeating Holger Rune at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia for his first clay-court title.
If Medvedev did not lift the trophy, Novak Djokovic would have entered Roland Garros as World No. 2. But now Medvedev is slated to be the second seed at the clay-court major. World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz will be the first seed and Djokovic the third seed, so they could land in the same half of the draw in Paris.
"If I would be No. 3, I would definitely play one of Alcaraz or Novak if I am in the semi-finals. You definitely have one of them in your draw," Medvedev said. "I guess it's better to be No. 2 and get the chance. Carlos and I [will not] play for sure before the final, and Novak maybe 50 per cent chance he's not in your draw. At the same time I haven't been further than quarters in Roland Garros."
Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings (after Rome Final)
Player Points
1) Carlos Alcaraz 6,815
2) Daniil Medvedev 6,330
3) Novak Djokovic 5,955
4) Casper Ruud 4,915
5) Stefanos Tsitsipas 4,775
Medvedev fell out of the Top 10 in January and was as low as World No. 12 in February. But the 27-year-old has surged since, winning titles in Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai, Miami and now Rome. The 20-time tour-level titlist will now set his sights on a return to World No. 1, a position he first reached last year and held for 16 weeks.
Medvedev will enter Roland Garros 485 points behind Alcaraz. Since Alcaraz reached the quarter-finals last year and Medvedev advanced to the fourth round, Medvedev will gain another 180 points on the Spaniard in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings when the tournament begins.

Medvedev is also in good position in the battle for year-end ATP No. 1 presented by Pepperstone. The 27-year-old leads the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin — a good indicator for that battle — by 845 points over second-placed Alcaraz and 1,555 points over third-placed Djokovic.
Rune also will make a move in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings on Monday when he climbs to a career-high World No. 6. One year ago, the Dane lost in the first round of qualifying in Rome. Now he is just 400 points from cracking the world's Top 5 for the first time.
