World No. 6 routinely acknowledges the help from ball kids
A point of the finger, a nod of the head, or simply requesting “towel” are the common interactions between elite tennis players and ball kids.
Gregarious World No. 6 Gael Monfils is aware that the ball kids are a vital component of the smooth transition between points. The Frenchman has always made a conscious decision throughout his professional career to specifically say “Thank you” (not just a casual 'Thanks') each time he goes to towel.
“I think I do it every time, It’s normal to me; I’ve been doing it for years,” states Monfils, who maintains that his family installed manners into his flamboyant match persona. “I’ve been raised like this, they give you the towel or a ball and I just naturally say ‘Thank you’”.
The 30-year-old is renowned for his pace and athleticism. But does he think he could keep pace with the demands of the job? “I was never a ball kid, but yeah for sure I could try.”
However, Monfils, back in action at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Thursday to take on defending champion Novak Djokovic, hopes his colleagues on court appreciate the endeavour of the ball kids. “People think being a ball kid is easy but it is difficult because all they have to do in a match, all the running, all the concentration, it’s tough,” insisted Monfils. “Most of the tournaments they do it well and this is something that players should be more thankful about.”

The sixth seed at the O2 arena is adamant that he plays the game to have fun. He regularly draws gasps from an absorbed crowd with his explosive brand of tennis, but whether he hits a difficult time on the court or is strolling towards victory, Monfils is frequently tempted to share a quick exchange with the ball kids. “Yeah, it’s happened once or twice before, sometimes if I feel like it I might have a quick chat.”
Despite two round-robin defeats on debut at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, Monfils has relished the occasion of featuring in the season finale.
“Hopefully I can bring my game (facing Djokovic). It’s been great for my first time in the O2 arena, it’s a beautiful stadium, and the atmosphere is very good,” stated Monfils. “I couldn’t expect much more from the experience, so I’m very happy I’ve been here.”

Monfils nieświadomie w ten sam sposób "bawił" się ze mną. Start sezonu beznadziejny, ciężko stwierdzić jakim cudem zrobił ćwierćfinał w Australii i finał w Rotterdamie (pewnie ludzie odpowiedzialni za losowanie wiedzą), a jeszcze ciężej patrzyło się na to, jak bezradny był w starciach z Raonicem i Klizanem. Później zaczął iść w górę - przyzwoite IW, dobre Miami i świetne Monte Carlo, w którym do momentu odcięcia prądu walczył na noże z grającym świetne (najlepsze w sezonie?) spotkanie Nadalem. Wtedy po raz pierwszy zobaczyłem ciastko, widziałem je mimo wycofania z Monachium, pechowej porażki w Madrycie i kłopotów zdrowotnych w Rzymie, bo problemy przed startem Roland Garros są taką samą tradycją jak ksiądz ględzący na ogłoszeniach w parafii mojej babci. W piątek, dzień losowania, zadzwonił do mnie Love (chyba NBA musiałem oglądać, gdyż zbudził mnie telefonem ok. 11) i przekazał wiadomość o wycofaniu. Wtedy pierwszy raz strzeliłem zębami, bo ciastka już nie było.
Dalej konsekwencje choroby - epizod na Wimbledonie, odpuszczenie DC i dochodzenie do pełnej sprawności. Sensowny występ w Waszyngtonie, potwierdzenie dobrej formy w Kanadzie i Igrzyska. Wprawdzie tym razem się nie wycofał, pewnie wygrał pierwsze mecze, przetrwał spotkanie z Cilicem i walczył o strefę medalową z Nishikorim. Nie ma sensu specjalnie opisywać tego starcia, bardzo dobrze grał Japończyk i w pewnej chwili zaczęło to wyglądać naprawdę źle, niemniej wrócił do gry Gael, świetnie się trzymał i doprowadził do 6-3 w TB decidera, co się później stało - wiemy. Tym razem było inaczej, zostając przy porównaniu, miałem już ciastko w swoim otworze gębowym, ale z niewyjaśnionych przyczyn nie mogłem go skonsumować. Czy to lepsze/gorsze rozwiązanie? Nie wiem, wiem natomiast, że znów obszedłem się smakiem.
Wycofanie z Cincinnati, pierwszy od 8 lat półfinał Szlema w Nowym Jorku, następnym punktem programu miała być walka o finał pucharu Davisa. Niestety w tak zwanym międzyczasie uszkodził sobie kolano i nic z tego nie wyszło (znów lekki zawód, ale dało się przeżyć). Powrót w Tokio zakończony lekcją tenisa od Kyrgiosa, Szanghaj pod znakiem skompromitowania się z Goffinem, Sztokholm z kulminacyjnym punktem tej części sezonu i nieudanym dive wolejem z Eliasem.
Jak się okazało podczas wspomnianej parady uszkodził sobie żebra, co w konsekwencji oznaczało wycofanie z Bercy (i nieprzygotowanie do Londynu). Tego Bercy, podczas którego nikt nie był w formie i wystarczyło zagrać tylko dobrze, by włączyć się do walki o coś poważnego. To było trzecie ciastko odebrane mi w ostatniej chwili i generalnie gwóźdź do trumny mojego zainteresowania sezonem. Z WTF widziałem tylko fragmenty meczu z Raonicem, na więcej nie miałem czasu (choć ten pewnie by się znalazł) ani przede wszystkim chęci.
Podsumowując, dziwny rok to był. Patrząc na statystyki - świetny, kierując się emocjami - straszny. Ciężko więc o jednoznaczną ocenę, los dość brutalnie sobie ze mnie zadrwił, nie pierwszy raz i pewnie nie ostatni. Naprawdę będę szczęśliwy, jeśli w przyszłym roku zagra w RG i Bercy, nawet jeśli miałyby to być występy w stylu tych z Fogninim i Pairem...

The Biggest Reason Monfils Had His Best Year On Tour

It’s one thing to position yourself to win a tennis match. It’s quite another to actually do it.
Gael Monfils enjoyed his best season on tour in 2016, ending the year at No. 7 in the Emirates ATP Rankings after reaching a career-high of No. 6 last month. In 2015, he finished the season at No. 24, and on the surface, not a lot of his metrics changed during the 12-month period. The difference was Monfils was far more efficient at finishing the job he started when returning.
An Infosys ATP Beyond The Numbers analysis of Monfils’ 44-17 season this year showed that when returning and getting to within one point of breaking at 0/40, 15/40 and 30/40, his conversion rate sky-rocketed compared to last year and at any other time during his 14-year career.
The following comparison to the 2015 season identifies that the number of return games Monfils played was almost identical, but the break points created and converted increased dramatically.

It’s a significant success to move the needle one or two percentage points with break-point conversion, but the flamboyant Frenchman improved almost five percentage points, converting 44 more break points (189 to 145) in 2016 than in 2015.

Monfils finished the 2016 season impressively ranked third on tour in break points converted, but he was the runaway leader on clay courts. He converted a mind-blowing 53.8 per cent of his break points on clay. As a comparison, Rafael Nadal is the career leader at converting break points on clay, at 48.8 per cent.
With the finish line of breaking serve just one point away this season, Monfils crossed it better than he ever has.

Gael wygrał wczoraj swój 24. mecz w Australian Open. Podczas meczu z Nadalem będzie starał się wyrównać wynik Sebastiena Grosjeana.

Bez sensu porównanie, bo kaliber graczy "trochę" inny, ale jak Fed zmierzający do zdmuchnięcia 36. świeczki na torcie urodzinowym, pokonał Nadala w finale WS (i to w 5 setach ), to nie ma co bez sensu się znęcać nad samym sobą.
