Alexander Zverev ogłosił podczas Laver Cup, że nie będzie wystąpi w zaplanowanym turnieju finałowym w Pucharze Davisa, który odbędzie się po raz pierwszy w listopadzie 2019 roku.

Finał Pucharu Davisa pomiędzy reprezentacjami Francji i Chorwacji zostanie rozegrany w dniach 23-25 listopada na Stade Pierre-Mauroy w Lille. Tenisiści będą rywalizować na korcie ziemnym.

Tym samym Lille trzeci raz w historii zostanie gospodarzem finału Pucharu Davisa. W 2014 roku na obiekcie Stade Pierre-Mauroy, gdzie występują piłkarze miejscowego klubu Lille OSC, Francja przegrała 1:3 ze Szwajcarią. Podczas tego spotkania pobito rekord frekwencji na meczu tenisa. Zmagania obserwowało 27,448 tys. kibiców. Z kolei w ubiegłym sezonie Francuzi cieszyli się z dziesiątego w historii Pucharu Davisa. W finałowej konfrontacji pokonali 3:2 drużynę Belgii.

Gospodarze mieli także prawo wyboru nawierzchni, na której zostanie rozegranie finał. Zdecydowali się na kort ziemny. Co ciekawe, na ceglanej mączce przegrali cztery ostatnie spotkania o tytuł na własnym terenie. W 2014 roku właśnie w Lille ulegli Szwajcarii, w 2002 w Paryżu nie sprostali Rosji, w 1999 w Nicei - Australii, a w 1982 w Grenoble zostali pokonani przez USA. Ostatni wygrany finał na czerwonej nawierzchni zanotowali w sezonie 1932, gdy w Paryżu pokonali 3:2 w USA.

Finał Pucharu Davisa 2018 odbędzie się w dniach 23-25 listopada. Dla Francji będzie to 19. w historii mecz o tytuł najważniejszych drużynowych rozgrywek w tenisa (wygrywała w latach 1927-1932, 1991, 1996, 2001 i 2017). Dla Chorwacji natomiast - trzeci (zwyciężyła w 2005 roku).

ROGER Federer has revealed that organisers of the relaunched and condensed Davis Cup gave him three days to decide if he would commit to the controversial competition.

Speaking at the Swiss Indoors tournament where he will play in Sunday’s final against Romanian qualifier Marius Copil, the world number three said that given the impossibly short time frame to make a decision, he opted out of any commitment.

“They only left me three days to decide,” Federer said. “I didn’t to have time to consult with all the people I had to consult.

“I could not make a decision in that time, so I told them to do what they wanted.”

The 20-time Grand Slam champion has voiced doubts about the wisdom of the one-week format to be introduced by organisers Kosmos, who have promised the International Tennis Federation up to $3 billion in prize money over the next quarter-century.

Fed eyes 9th home gong
The competition is set to feature 18 countries in the November 18-24 finals in Madrid next year, and will replace the classic home-and-away ties played four times per year for decades.

Kosmos is headed by Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique, who is hoping fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal will play in the upcoming event.

“I highly doubt it, of course. We’ll see what happens,” he said. “I don’t think this was designed for me, anyhow. This was designed for the future generation of players.”

Argentina and Britain received wildcards to the new-look event, and will compete along with the four 2018 semi-finalists and the 12 teams who win qualifying rounds next February.

A la surprise générale, le Manceau est revenu sur le court après deux heures d’absence. Il y est resté un quart d’heure, et a fait des exercices de réflexe. On a pu toutefois constater un début de bandage au niveau du haut du bras et de l'épaule droite.

Cilic-Tsonga clash highlights Friday play
France will look to retain the Davis Cup title this weekend as Yannick Noah’s team takes on Croatia. If France lifts the trophy for the 11th time, the nation will become the sixth to retain the championship since the Challenge Round was eliminated in 1972. The last instance was in 2012-13, when the Czech Republic triumphed twice in a row.

It will be a tough task for the defending champions as Croatia is led by three players who were at The O2 for the prestigious Nitto ATP Finals. Marin Cilic competed at the season finale for the fourth time, Borna Coric was in London as an alternate and Mate Pavic was half of the top-seeded doubles team.

Cilic, who will play Friday’s second singles match against former World No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille, France, feels that his effort last week has helped prepare him for the challenge ahead.

“Just playing against top guys just maybe lifts your level a bit, focus-wise,” said Cilic, who leads Tsonga 5-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, in London. “Playing-wise, you have to play every single point on a high level. I feel that might help me.”

In Friday's first match, Frenchman Jeremy Chardy will face Coric, who has enjoyed the best season of his career. Coric, who won the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, is fresh off his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. Chardy, the No. 40 player in the ATP Rankings, leads their series 3-2. The top-ranked Frenchman on the team in Lille, Lucas Pouille, was not chosen to compete on Friday.

France has plenty of doubles firepower with Nitto ATP Finals runners-up Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, who will clash against Pavic and Ivan Dodig on Saturday. Herbert and Mahut captured this year's Roland Garros title and they were also victorious in Rotterdam.

The home favourites will try to win their eighth tie in a row, which would match its second-longest winning streak. Croatia is attempting to win its second Davis Cup title in its third final. Two years ago, Croatia fell just short against Argentina when Juan Martin del Potro came from two sets to one down against Cilic to win the fourth rubber, allowing Federico Delbonis to defeat Ivo Karlovic in a live fifth rubber.

“We are expecting a great atmosphere obviously in Lille. It's going to be great. [The] French team always plays great at home. They're known for having great results in France, so it's going to be fun. It's going to be great to play, great excitement for both teams,” Cilic said at The O2. “We had a great season as a team. The French team also, Herbert-Mahut are playing great… They're going to be the rock of the team in doubles. For us, we have to play well, step it up, try to obviously give our best to win."
