Records continue to topple at the hands of Novak Djokovic.
Beginning his 419th week today as World No. 1, the Serbian will by week's end break Roger Federer's record as the oldest No. 1 in PIF ATP Rankings history. Djokovic will surpass the Swiss on Sunday, when he will be 36 years and 321 days old.
One of the sporting world’s all-time greats, Djokovic has demonstrated near-unparalleled longevity at the top of his sport even into his fourth decade. Since he turned 30 on 22 May 2017, the Serbian has won 31 tour-level titles, including 12 of his 24 Grand Slams, 10 of his 40 ATP Masters 1000 crowns, and two of his seven Nitto ATP Finals trophies.

Djokovic’s renowned hard work and professionalism in every aspect of his preparation, training and recovery have ensured that he has remained one of the best athletes in the game deep into his mid-30s. To complement his obvious on-court brilliance, he has long practised yoga and meditation to help with his physical and mental well-being, while he also does all he can in terms of his diet to keep himself in good shape.
The Serbian has often spoken about how the emergence of younger rivals has pushed him to greater heights and his continued excellence has enabled him to consistently go toe-to-toe with new generations of ATP Tour stars.

Djokovic first became World No. 1 on 4 July 2011 at the age of 24. In contrast, both of Djokovic’s great ‘Big 3’ rivals, Federer and Rafael Nadal, reached No. 1 for the first time aged 22. Djokovic’s most recent rival for top spot, Carlos Alcaraz, became the youngest No. 1 in PIF ATP Rankings history in September 2022 at the age of 19.
Yet in the nearly 13 years since he first became World No. 1, Djokovic has spent a large percentage of his time atop tennis’ mountain. Monday signalled the start of his record-extending 419th week as World No. 1, meaning he is now 109 weeks clear of second-placed Federer (310 weeks).
In February 2023, Djokovic also surpassed Stefanie Graf’s tally of 377 weeks to claim the record for the most weeks by a men’s or women’s tennis player as World No. 1. By now becoming the oldest No. 1 in PIF ATP Rankings history, Djokovic has set another record that is well-placed to stand the test of time.

No. 2 Jannik Sinner, +1 (Career High)
Sinner dropped just one set en route to the title at Hard Rock Stadium, where he became the first Italian to claim multiple Masters 1000 trophies. Having already won his first Grand Slam at January’s Australian Open and an ATP 500 in Rotterdam in Rotterdam, the Italian’s third tour-level triumph of the year has lifted him above rival Carlos Alcaraz to a career-high No. 2 in the PIF ATP Rankings.
No. 9 Grigor Dimitrov, +3
Despite a straight-sets defeat to Sinner in the championship match, Grigor Dimitrov continued his resurgence of the past 12 months with some high-class displays in Miami. The Bulgarian dispatched Top 10 opponents Hubert Hurkacz, Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev in consecutive matches to reach his third Masters 1000 final. He has returned to the Top 10 himself for the first time since October 2018 as a result.

No. 38 Fabian Marozsan, +19 (Career High)
A breakout ‘Sunshine Double’ for Fabian Marozsan has seen the Hungarian rise to a career-high World No. 38. The Hungarian backed up his fourth-round run in Indian Wells by reaching his second Masters 1000 quarter-final in Miami. The 24-year-old downed Top 10 stars Holger Rune and Alex de Minaur en route.
No. 43 Tomas Machac, +17 (Career High)
Another first-time Masters 1000 quarter-finalist in Miami was Tomas Machac. Highlights of the Czech’s run included beating World No. 6 Andrey Rublev in the second round before battling past two-time Miami champion Andy Murray in the third round. Although Sinner proved too strong in the pair’s last-eight clash, Machac has risen 17 spots to a career-high World No. 43.

Jannik Sinner’s surge has been the biggest story of the 2024 season. As the clay-court season begins, the Italian has an opportunity to make even more history by making a push to pass Novak Djokovic and become the No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings.
After winning the Miami Open presented by Itau, the 22-year-old on Monday climbed to a career-high World No. 2, 1,015 points behind World No. 1 Djokovic. If Sinner maintains his current form, he will have an opportunity to make his move later in the clay season, setting the stage for a tantalising battle for top spot with Djokovic and former World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz looming.
“For sure it means a lot to me, but more importantly, it was a great performance for me, especially in that semi-final and final, which for me it's more important,” Sinner said after defeating Grigor Dimitrov in the Miami final. “Being No. 2, it's an amazing feeling. I never thought to come to this point. I come from a very normal family. My dad is still working, as my mom, too. For me, sport is one thing, and life is different. I'm very happy to be in this position.”
World No. 1 Battle
Player Current Pts Pts Defending On Clay
1) Novak Djokovic 9,725 2,315
2) Jannik Sinner 8,710 585
3) Carlos Alcaraz 8,645 2,265
If you remove all points Djokovic (2,315) and Sinner (2,265) are defending during the clay season, Sinner has 715 more points (8,125 to 7,410). The critical moment in the battle will likely come at Roland Garros, where defending champion Djokovic will have 2,000 points coming off and Sinner will only drop 45 points following a second-round loss in 2023.
That does not mean that Djokovic can rest easy at No. 1 in the coming weeks. Among the upcoming tournaments are three clay-court ATP Masters 1000 events, with plenty of points up for grabs.
Sinner will be confident heading into the clay season after his 22-1 start to the year. The 22-year-old’s only loss came in the Indian Wells semi-finals against Carlos Alcaraz. He has won titles at the Australian Open, Rotterdam and Miami.
With that start, the Italian has already become the highest-ranked player from his country in PIF ATP Rankings history (since 1973). Now he will set his sights set on becoming the 29th player to reach World No. 1.

Djokovic will not relinquish his position without a fight, though. The 36-year-old just began his record 419th week at the top of men’s tennis and on Sunday will break Roger Federer’s mark as the oldest World No. 1 in history.

The Serbian owns an 8-3 record in 2024, including his run to the Australian Open semi-finals, where he lost to Sinner in four sets. Despite a third-round loss at Indian Wells, Djokovic will be confident heading into Monte-Carlo, where he is a two-time champion and will try to claim his record-extending 41st Masters 1000 trophy. He has won more than 80 per cent of his tour-level matches on clay according to Infosys ATP Stats.
Alcaraz is still in the battle, too. The World No. 3, currently 65 points behind Sinner, is defending 2,265 points on clay. That puts the Spaniard on the back foot, but last year’s Madrid and Barcelona champion has proven his prowess on clay and showed his return to form at Indian Wells, where he successfully defended his trophy.
Alcaraz first reached World No. 1 after the 2022 US Open and will be keen to add to the 36 weeks he has spent in the position.
1. Federer: 36 lat, 10 miesięcy i 10 dni
2. Djokovic: 36 lat, 3 miesiące i 20 dni.
