Wu Saves Match Point To Advance In Geneva

Wu Yibing is finding his footing on clay. After earning his first tour-level win on the surface in Rome, he earned another on Monday in Geneva.

The Chinese star saved one match point en route to a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(6) victory against home favourite Marc-Andrea Hustler in the first round of the Gonet Geneva Open.

“[He is] a very tough opponent to play against. It’s the first time we played each other and of course he is from here, there’s more people cheering for him,” Wu said in his on-court interview. “But I’m glad I [pulled] through these ups and downs, especially the first few games in the second set. I made like 10 double faults in a row, which shouldn’t happen. try to be better next time.”


Wu, who hit seven double faults in the match, found his best when it mattered most. Huesler earned match point at 6/5 in the final-set tie-break, but Wu played aggressively and finished off the point at the net with an overhead.

“I’m very happy,” said Wu, who will next play 2018 Roland Garros semi-finalist Marco Cecchinato. “It’s my first time here playing Geneva, first time for me here in Switzerland and it’s a beautiful country. First few days I practised and I tried to visit the city a little bit. You guys have amazing watches and chocolate!”

Wu Spoils Kyrgios Return In Stuttgart

Before Tuesday afternoon in Stuttgart, Wu Yibing had not played a match on grass since he was a junior.

That relative inexperience on the surface did not stop the Chinese from notching an impressive opening win at the BOSS OPEN, where he defeated a physically struggling Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 6-3 in the first-round at the ATP 250 event in Germany.

“The last time I played on grass was juniors back in 2017, so six years,” said Wu after his victory. “I was really happy to play Nick in the first round. He’s one of the best players on grass and he served well… He aced me [so many] times. The key for me was to stay cool, stay patient in the game and find a way. I’m happy [with that result].”


Kyrgios, who had surgery to repair a small tear in his left lateral meniscus in January, appeared to be struggling physically from early in the match, at one point telling his team he was unable to ‘walk without pain’.

Wu saved a break point in the opening game with a classy forehand on the run before making his move on return to break Kyrgios in the 12th game and claim the first set. As Kyrgios’ movement grew visibly more restricted, the World No. 64 Wu also claimed the only break of the second set to seal his third Top 30 win.

“It was pretty special because it was very tense, and he was holding his service games pretty easily,” said Wu, when asked about his break to claim the opening set. “I was suffering [on serve] sometimes because he has a better serve than me, but I was patient in the match. I will keep going and work on my serve, and hopefully I can be a better server.”

Wu’s second-round opponent will be Marton Fucsovics after the Hungarian qualifier rallied past Denis Shapovalov 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The Tour: Wu Yibing Reveals Surprise Cheat Meal

The 23-year-old shares which English Premier League club he supports
Wu Yibing’s rapid rise has been one of the notable stories on the ATP Tour in the past year. In a span of 13 months, the Chinese star climbed from No. 1,738 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings to a career-high No. 54 in April.

The 23-year-old’s journey has been filled with hard work and memorable moments. Wu revealed in ATP Uncovered one fun story involving his discovery of a new cheat meal.

“When I first came back from Covid, I broke my ankle and then my first tournament I came back, I’m playing [an ITF World Tennis Tour event] in the States,” Wu said. “On the way to the tournament, me and my coach saw this burger place, Five Guys, it’s very popular in the States. Me and my coach said, ‘Let’s eat this if you win the tournament!’ I actually won it, so we celebrated with Five Guys. I got a hot dog and a burger.”


Wu also reflected on his childhood and explained why tennis won out over another sport.
