Roger Federer has yet to return to practice because of a back injury, but says he and compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka are on good terms following their semifinal dispute during the ATP World Tour Finals.

Federer, having developed another back injury during the third-set tiebreak of his match against Wawrinka, said it was the same type of problem he has had previously, but severe enough to prevent him from playing the final. The world No. 2 said he is still hoping to play the Davis Cup final this week alongside Wawrinka, with Switzerland attempting to win the team competition for the first time.

“It's definitely not good enough to practice yesterday,” Federer said at a team press conference in Lille, France, where the tie will be played. “I feel it’s definitely a little bit better than it was on Saturday night and Sunday and also Monday.”

Federer will attempt to practice on Wednesday, saying, “I needed rest in the very beginning because you need to have the inflammation go away. Then it's exercises, treatment.”

On the dispute with Wawrinka, Federer said the two “had a conversation” following the match and that it had been a “heat-of-the-moment” happening.

Wawrinka exchanged heated comments during the third set of the match with Mirka Federer, Roger’s wife. He objected to the timing of her cheering, drawing an angry reaction. Umpire Cedric Mourier confirmed in an interview with French press that Mirka was the subject of Wawrinka's complaint.

“I said, there’s no hard feelings whatsoever. We're having a good time here. We are friends, not enemies,” said Federer.

“We had no problem together. We talk about that already straight after the match. Not only about that, about many things,” agreed Wawrinka.

Federer and Wawrinka are scheduled to take on a French team led by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gael Monfils, and Richard Gasquet.

One week after the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, tennis turns its focus on the Davis Cup final, where World No. 2 Roger Federer and reigning Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka carry Switzerland's hope of winning its first Davis Cup title against nine-time champion France. The tie will be held on an indoor clay court at the 27,000-seat Pierre Stade Mauroy in Lille, France, 21-23 November.

The French team comprises Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gael Monfils, Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet. Switzerland has nominated Federer, Wawrinka, Marco Chiudinelli and Michael Lammer for its team.

The 33-year-old Federer, who reached the title match at last week's Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, is his country’s most successful Davis Cup singles player, amassing a 37-7 FedEx ATP Win/Loss record. Federer won all five of his singles rubbers this year (48-16 career record) and could overtake Jakob Hlasek (49-30) as Switzerland’s most successful player during this weekend’s tie.

Wawrinka, fresh from his semi-final run at the season finale, owns a 20-13 record in singles rubbers (23-25 overall). The 29 year old won his singles rubber against Fabio Fognini in the semi-finals, contributing to Switzerland's 3-2 victory over Italy.

Switzerland is chasing its maiden Davis Cup title, and has reached the final just once before, falling to the United States in 1992.

France is bidding for its 10th Davis Cup title in 17 finals appearances, and first since 2001 (d. Australia). The title would put France in third on the list of all-time champions, behind the United States (32) and Australia (28).

In the 2014 ATP World Tour season, Tsonga claimed his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy in Toronto (d. Federer), Monfils lifted the Montpellier trophy and reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros (l. to Murray) and the US Open (l. to Federer), Benneteau teamed with Edouard Roger-Vasselin to win the 2014 Roland Garros crown and reach the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals semi-finals (l. to Bryan/Bryan) and Gasquet finished runner-up twice - in Montpellier (l. to Monfils) and Eastbourne (l. to F. Lopez).

This is the first time the two countries are meeting in a final. France leads in its head-to-head against Switzerland 10-2, with their most recent meeting coming in 2004, when Nicolas Escude claimed the fifth rubber to clinch a 3-2 victory in the World Group quarter-finals. France last appeared in a final four years ago, falling to Serbia 3-2 when Michael Llodra fell to Viktor Troicki in the decisive fifth rubber.

En route to the 2014 final, France swept Australia 5-0 in the first round, followed by a 3-2 win over Germany and a 4-1 upset of top seed Czech Republic in the semi-finals. Switzerland dispatched Serbia 3-2 in their first-round tie, followed by a 3-2 victory over Kazakhstan and a win over Italy.
