• DAY 6 PREVIEW: Third round action on Monday at the Miami Open, presented by Itau, continues with both Swiss superstars in Stadium court action. No. 1 Stan Wawrinka and No. 4 Roger Federer are the only remaining Emirates top-ten players in the top half of the draw. Two more top-ten seeds are in action today—No. 8 David Goffin and No. 10 Tomas Berdych—along with U.S. stars No. 18 John Isner and No. 22 Sam Querrey.
In the opening men’s match on Stadium, Federer squares off against long-time rival No. 29 seed Juan Martin del Potro. The pair has played twenty times, but this is their first meeting since the 2013 Barclays ATP World Tour finals, where Federer defeated the Argentine in round-robin play. Del Potro has won three of the last five encounters, but the Swiss has emerged victorious all five times the pair has met at Masters 1000 series events.
In the last day session match, Isner will try to exact revenge on German #NextGen star Alexander Zverev, who beat him last fall in Shanghai, their only previous meeting. Isner reached the semi-finals here two years ago (l. to Djokovic), while Zverev is charting new territory, playing in the Miami third round for the first time.
In the evening session, Wawrinka will take on Tunisian Malek Jaziri, who ousted No. 31 seed Lopez on Saturday. Jaziri is looking for his first-ever victory against an Emirates top-ten opponent (0-9), and is facing the Swiss for the first time. Wawrinka is playing his first Masters-level event as the top seed, and is aiming to reach the quarter-finals in order to top his previous best showing here (2009, 2014 4th round).
On Grandstand, 2010 finalist Berdych takes on No. 24 Gilles Muller in their second career encounter. Muller beat the Czech last fall in Tokyo. Next up, Querrey goes for the upset against No. 14 Roberto Bautista Agut, who has defeated him twice in the past. The third men’s match is sure to be a big-serving clash between No. 12 Nick Kyrgios and No. 17 Ivo Karlovic. The Australian has won both previous encounters. Closing the day’s Grandstand action is Goffin against Diego Schwartzman, the No. 2 ranked Argentine, who upset Ferrer on Saturday. The head-to-head is knotted at one, and Schwartzman won the last match, in last year’s Antwerp semi-finals.
On Court 1, #NextGen Croat Borna Coric faces the French left-hander Adrian Mannarino, both of whom hold a losing record on the season. Each player needed to score an upset to reach the round of 32: Coric ousted No. 6 seed Thiem, and Mannarino surprised No. 32 Lorenzi. Mannarino reached the 4th round here in 2015 (d. Wawrinka, l. to Thiem), while Coric is making his first third-round appearance.
