Serb finished year-end No. 1 in FedEx ATP Rankings for sixth time
Over eight days, ATPTour.com has served up a season snapshot of the eight players who qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals. Illustrated by intimate portraits from British photographer Simon Owen, the series concludes today with a review of World No. 1 Novak Djokovic's season.
Memorable Moment
Incredible as it may seem, Novak Djokovic came into 2020 having finished year-end No. 1 in the FedEx ATP Rankings just once in the previous four seasons. In reclaiming the year-end throne from Rafael Nadal, the Serb tied his idol Pete Sampras with six No. 1 finishes. In December, Djokovic joined Roger Federer as just the second man to reach 300 total weeks at No. 1.
Key Stat
En route to his eighth title at the Australian Open in January, Djokovic became the sixth player in the Open Era to reach 900 tour-level match wins with a third-round victory over German Jan-Lennard Struff. Interestingly, Djokovic's 900-187 mark at the time exactly matched Rafael Nadal's win-loss record when the Spaniard reached the same milestone in 2018. Djokovic needs 66 match wins to reach 1,000. Could he do it in 2021? He won 65 matches in 2016 and 82 in 2015.
Quotable
“I will keep striving to be a better player, hopefully have more success and break more records in a sport I love with all my heart.”
The Road Ahead
Should Djokovic remain atop the FedEx ATP Rankings in the first part of the season, he will break Federer's record of 310 weeks at No. 1 on 8 March. Beyond that, he will try to set a new record of seven year-end No. 1 finishes. The owner of 17 Grand Slam titles will try to close the gap on Federer and Nadal's record haul of 20. The 33-year-old will also look to build on his record 36 ATP Masters 1000 titles, which has him just one ahead of Nadal's 35 victories at the level.

The names for the European sportspersons of the year are out and the honors list features as many as 4 tennis players.
Novak Djokovic stamps his status as Europe’s best
Topping the list of best European tennis players this calendar year with 85 points is Novak Djokovic. The Serb clinched his 17th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open this season and also recorded a staggering win percentage of 89.1%.
At 41, Djokovic posted the joint highest number of wins alongside Russian Andrey Rublev. He won 4 titles this year and also achieved his 6th year-end Number 1 ranking, equaling American tennis great Pete Sampras.
The only blemish for the Serb this calendar year was his disqualification from the US Open for accidentally hitting a female line judge with a tennis ball during his 4th-round encounter against Pablo Carreno Busta.
Also, Djokovic would have regretted not winning the ATP Finals in London, extending his title-less run at the elite season-ending event to the 5th straight year.
Rafael Nadal second in the list of best tennis players with 72 points
Rafael Nadal found himself at #2 in the list of best tennis players this year with 72 points to his name. The Spaniard won his 13th French Open title this year, tying Roger Federer for the highest number of Grand Slams won at 20 apiece.

However, the year’s first Grand Slam, the Australian Open, didn’t end well for him as he went out in the quarter-finals, losing to Austrian Dominic Thiem in 5 sets.

He also couldn’t break his title jinx at the ATP Finals, extending his barren run at the tournament to the 10th year. However, he did reaffirm his status as the Numero Uno on clay.
The Spaniard did raise visions of finally ending his trophy-drought by making the last-4 stage of the event but inexplicably surrendered the momentum to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev from a winning position.
Nadal was leading by a set and a break of serve before the Russian scripted a fairytale comeback to set up a title clash with Thiem.
Iga Swiatek voted the best women’s tennis player
Also voted as the best woman tennis player this calendar year, Polish sensation Iga Swiatek features next in the list with 32 points. The 19-year-old Pole rose to stratospheric heights with her maiden Grand Slam win at the French Open.
Underlining her dominance at Roland-Garros, Swiatek didn’t lose a single set on the way to lifting the title.
Dominic Thiem rounds off the list with 19 points
Rounding off the list of best European tennis players this calendar year is Dominic Thiem with 19 points.
Also voted as Austria’s athlete of the year, Thiem clinched his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open and also made the final of the Australian Open where he eventually lost to Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic Foundation Surprises Children With Their Heartfelt Gestures on Christmas
Spoiler:
Charity has been a central aim of Novak Djokovic since he emerged from tour. The player has his own foundation, which carries out various philanthropic works on his behalf. And now, during this festive period, the foundation is undertaking some work to help children have a colorful year ahead.
The Novak Djokovic Foundation has become Santa Claus for various children in hospitals around Serbia. The foundation will renovate hospital rooms and send presents to these kids, just like Santa Claus, in this festive period.
“Ho-ho-ho, Merry Christmas NDF family!. This holiday season, we decided to surprise children in hospitals with renovated rooms and playrooms, so their lives can shine a little brighter. We’re looking forward to seeing the smiles on their faces!” Novak Djokovic Foundation updates on Twitter.
Novak Djokovic aims to help healthcare and children in children
Earlier in a statement, Djokovic gave the first objectives of his foundation going into 2021. The coronavirus pandemic has been heavy on Serbia. So the foundation has tried its best to help the healthcare sector in Serbia.
“Considering the current pandemic situation, this year we primarily focused on healthcare, and with our donations, tried to assist the healthcare institutions in Serbia,”

Further, the primary goal of the foundation has been helping underprivileged children. They have built new preschools in various villages in Serbia to aid in the education of younger children.
“However, our primary goal is still to invest into children and their future. The goal is to open new preschools in Vajska and Ljubis villages, which will accommodate a total of 105 children. Each of these places has its own story, and we want to tell it to the whole world, with the help of those who believe in our mission.”
So, coupled with the humanitarian work, Djokovic has been performing at a great level on the ATP tour. He is still winning a lot of matches and tournaments. The 17-time Grand Slam champion will defend the ATP Cup crown with Serbia in the first week of February in Australia. Later, he will defend his Australian Open title from February 8.
After becoming only the second man to hold the top spot in the FedEx ATP Rankings for 300 weeks on 21 December, Djokovic will have his sights set on one of the most prestigious records in tennis in the first quarter of the 2021 ATP Tour season. The Serbian is currently nine weeks behind Roger Federer’s record of 310 weeks at the top of the sport.
Djokovic, who leads longtime rival and World No. 2 Nadal by 2,180 points, will pass Federer’s mark if he can maintain his position at the top of the sport until 8 March 2021. It is not the only FedEx ATP Rankings record the Serbian is chasing next year.
In 2020, Djokovic tied his idol Pete Sampras’ record of six year-end World No. 1 finishes. The 33-year-old will be aiming to take sole ownership of that record by completing back-to-back year-end World No. 1 finishes for the third time (also 2011-12, ’14-15).
All-Time Weeks At No. 1 (as of 28 December 2020)
1) Roger Federer 310
2) Novak Djoković 301
3) Pete Sampras 286
4) Ivan Lendl 270
5) Jimmy Connors 268
Tenis. Andy Roddick chwali Novaka Djokovicia. "O tym nie mówi się wystarczająco głośno"
Spoiler:
Players touch down ahead of ATP Cup, Australian Open
The world's leading tennis players have begun arriving Down Under for a very different Australian summer swing reshaped by the COVID-19 pandemic. The likes of World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Dominic Thiem are preparing for an abbreviated ATP Cup, new and relocated tournaments in Melbourne and an Australian Open pushed back to February from its traditional mid-January start.
Djokovic, who last year dominated the swing by leading Serbia to victory in the ATP Cup and capturing a record eighth Australian Open title, arrived wearing his ATP Cup jacket.
To ease player travel logistics during the pandemic, Tennis Australia chartered 15 flights to bring players from the first ATP Tour stops in Antalya and Delray Beach (Miami), as well as from travel hubs including Dubai and Los Angeles. Some players will be travelling from Doha, where the Australian Open men’s qualifying event took place. Adhering to health and safety protocols in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19, players will submit to 14 days of hotel quarantine upon arrival before competing.

In the same week, Melbourne will also host two ATP 250 events, which run 31 Jan. - 6 Feb. David Goffin and Karen Khachanov will headline the Murray River Open (Melbourne 1), while Stan Wawrinka and home favourite Nick Kyrgios feature at Great Ocean Road Open (Melbourne 2). #NextGenATP stars including Jannik Sinner (Melbourne 1) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (Melbourne 2) will also be in action.
The men's Australian summer swing will culminate at the Australian Open, to be held from 8-21 February. Fans will be allowed to attend in a limited capacity. Djokovic is the defending champion after defeating Thiem in five sets last year to claim his eighth Melbourne crown.
