Two-time champ Kyrgios defeated Medvedev in 2019 final
Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios on Wednesday withdrew from the Mubadala Citi DC Open.
Medvedev has competed at the Washington ATP 500 event on three previous occasions, tallying an 8-3 record. In 2019 he reached the final, losing to Kyrgios.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a standout 2023 season, earning a 46-9 record and five titles. Only Carlos Alcaraz has more wins this year, with 47. Medvedev has triumphed in Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai, Miami and Rome.
The No. 3 player in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings last competed at Wimbledon, where he reached the semi-finals for the first time. Eventual champion Alcaraz stopped him there in straight sets.
Kyrgios is a two-time Washington champion, having lifted the trophy in 2019 and 2022. The Australian has only competed in one event this year — last month in Stuttgart — due to injury.
Stars are the top two seeds at the Canadian ATP Masters 1000
Fans were in for a treat Saturday in Toronto, where Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev shared a practice session ahead of the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers.
Alcaraz arrives in Toronto fresh off his memorable victory at Wimbledon, where he defeated Novak Djokovic in a scintillating final. The Spaniard is 47-4 in 2023 with six titles.
The 20-year-old is the top seed at the season's sixth ATP Masters 1000 event. He will play #NextGenATP American Ben Shelton or Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the second round.
Medvedev is the defending champion in Toronto, where he lifted the trophy in 2021. He is the second seed and will open against home favourite Vasek Pospisil or a qualifier.
The 27-year-old has claimed five titles this season, including Masters 1000 triumphs in Miami and Rome.
2) Medvedev Defending Toronto Champ: The last time this tournament was played in Toronto, Medvedev departed with the trophy. Medvedev completed his run in 2021 by losing just 11 combined games in the semi-final and final. The second seed will try to earn Canadian glory once again this year, when he starts against home favourite Vasek Pospisil or a qualifier.
Why Medvedev Feels A 'Small Pressure' Returning To Hard Courts
Spoiler:
Second seed will begin his Toronto run against Arnaldi or Pospisil
Daniil Medvedev has won 18 of his 20 tour-level titles on hard courts, so it is safe to say the World No. 3 is happy to be starting his hard-court swing this week at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers in Toronto.
“I love to play all these tournaments, I played them very well many times. But it's a small pressure because I know that I want to do well here,” Medvedev said in his pre-tournament press conference. “So it's a little bit of pressure where I'll have to cope with it and to try to go through it. I feel like I have done it many times in my career, but it's going to be here again and again. So I have to deal with it.”
Medvedev has enjoyed plenty of success in Canada. The last time the men's event was held in Toronto, Medvedev won, and in 2019 he reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final in Montreal. On his Toronto debut in 2018, he made the third round as a qualifier.
“It feels amazing. I love this tournament. I remember actually playing well, even [five] years ago, I lost to Zverev, but I passed qualies, beat Felix. It was a crazy match, so very good memories so far from Toronto,” Medvedev said. “It's actually the first time I'm staying in the city. The two times I've been here I was staying uptown. And actually I played in Toronto, I won in Toronto, but I didn't know how Toronto is as a city.
“So now I get to know it. I like it. enjoying my time here and of course getting ready for for the first match.”

Seeded second this week, Medvedev will open his tournament against home favourite Vasek Pospisil or Italian qualifier Matteo Arnaldi. Medvedev will take the court with plenty of confidence knowing he has already won hard-court titles this year in Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai and Miami.
“I’m really happy because that's just my favorite surface, so I feel great on it. I feel like my game suits it very well, I feel it even [in] practice,” Medvedev said. “And this doesn't mean everything, you can still lose. In a way it's easy to lose. There are so many players that want to win.
“But I love to play on hard courts. My body feels the best on it. So this is very important. I feel like on clay and grass, I have more things concerning my body like I would have pain here, there, probably because I would do some shots not in a good way or something like this. On hard courts I feel very fluid. So really happy. And let's see how it goes.”

Medvedev on Saturday practised with top seed Carlos Alcaraz in a well-attended session inside Sobeys Stadium. It is not often fans get to see the top two players on the same court at a tournament until the final.
“For sure, we're not going to practise too often because hopefully we can play finals, semi-finals and more to come like two times this year already,” Medvedev said. “So usually you don't try this every day with your rivals, but it can happen once, twice, three times per year. And it was again [a] great practice. I think we both enjoyed it. “
For now Medvedev will focus on the first match in front of him. That is the attitude that has helped him earn six Masters 1000 titles in the past.
“I’m sure I can do well here,” Medvedev said. “But for this I will need to play good tennis.”
Second seed lifted title at ATP Masters 1000 in 2021
Former champion Daniil Medvedev continued his impressive record in Toronto on Wednesday when he defeated Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-2, 7-5 at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers.
The second seed is now 8-1 in Toronto, having lifted the title in 2021. Competing for the first time since his run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon, Medvedev looked in control in his opening match at this year's event, standing deep behind the baseline to outlast Arnaldi in the baseline exchanges.
He saved all three break points he faced, struck 29 winners and fended off an Arnaldi resurgence in the second set to improve to 2-0 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series against the Italian. The 27-year-old will meet Lorenzo Musetti or Thanasi Kokkinakis in the third round following his one-hour, 26-minute win.
The World No. 3 is chasing a record-equalling sixth tour-level title of the season this week (Carlos Alcaraz 6). Medvedev, currently third in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin, clinched ATP Masters 1000 crowns in Miami and Rome in 2023.
Arnaldi, who competed at the 2022 Next Gen ATP Finals, earned his maiden tour-level hard-court win against Canadian Vasek Pospisil in the first round.
@Kamileki, odpoczął Danił trochę po szaleńczej wczesnej wiośnie, odpuścił Waszyngton i chyba ma zamiar znowu wygrać kilka spotkań.

Medvedev Maintains Impressive Toronto Record
Spoiler:
Daniil Medvedev continued his standout 2023 ATP Masters 1000 record on Thursday when he cruised past Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers.
The second seed was watertight off the ground throughout the one-hour, 33-minute clash, hitting with consistency to limit opportunities for Musetti. Medvedev recovered from a dip in concentration in the second set when he squandered his break advantage, but responded immediately to earn his 48th win of the season.
Medvedev is chasing his third Masters 1000 crown of the season, having triumphed in Miami and Rome. He also reached the final in Indian Wells, holding a 22-3 record at Masters 1000 events this year. If the World No. 3 clinches the title in Toronto, he will join Carlos Alcaraz on a Tour-leading six trophies this season.
The 27-year-old, currently third in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin, will next face Alex de Minaur. Medvedev now holds a 9-1 record in Toronto, having triumphed at the Canadian event in 2021.
Musetti was aiming to reach his second Masters 1000 quarter-final of the season after advancing to the last eight on clay in Monte-Carlo. The Italian was unable to sustain any real pressure on Medvedev, who won 82 per cent (28/34) of his first-serve points.
