A Human Hallmark Commercial
American Andy Roddick has been trying to stay collected in the 24 hours since announcing that he will retire, but admitted he nearly lost it just before his second-round match Friday night. “I made the mistake of walking by one of the TVs while they were doing one of those slow dramatic things. I couldn’t hear volume, but I assume it was set to an ‘80s ballad and it got me a little bit so I had to get away from it,” he admitted.
His coach, Larry Stefanki, helped bring him back to reality. “Larry patted me on the back and said, “Alright, let’s calm down. You look like a human Hallmark commercial.”
All In The Family
Roddick’s parents, Jerry and Blanche, and brother John were among those in attendance Friday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Blanche shared that their son broke the news of his retirement to them Thursday morning, while John said he found out in the afternoon when he returned his brother’s call upon his arrival in New York.
“It was strange coming out not knowing if this was going to be his last match or which one is, so a little different feeling coming out knowing this is the last time you’re going to see him play,” John said in an interview with ESPN during the match. Blanche also summarised her feelings: “Sadness, humor, great thoughts and memories.”
Roddick Remembers
Six years ago, Roddick nearly played Andre Agassi in the American legend’s final tournament appearance. Agassi knocked off an eighth-ranked Marcos Baghdatis in five sets to reach the third round, and needed to defeat German Benjamin Becker for a chance to go head-to-head with Roddick. The 112th-ranked Becker played the role of spoiler, defeating Agassi in four sets - admittedly to Roddick’s relief.
“I remember Andre retiring and I remember I was so torn because I didn’t want to have to play Andre in his last match,” said Roddick on a visit to the ESPN set. “It would’ve been terrible for me if I was serving for the match against him. He would’ve been crying and I probably would’ve been crying, too.
“But I remember him coming into the locker room afterwards and everyone giving him a standing ovation and I’m getting emotional because he’s been a mentor to me, but I’ve got to go out and play my third round right after that. It was hard. It was a special day when he left.”
Bryans Battle Averted
There will be peace in the Bryans’ camp after a second-round mixed doubles clash was averted following Mike Bryan and Lisa Raymond’s 6-1, 7-5 loss to Bruno Soares and Ekaterina Makarova on Friday.
“It’s probably for the best,” said Bob Bryan, who teamed with Kim Clijsters for a 6-2, 6-2 victory. “We don’t want to be competing mid-tournament. We’ve still got a run going in the doubles. So it’s best, one of us laying down, I don’t have to go head-to-head against this guy. That would freak him out.”
The Bryans last faced off in the 2008 Wimbledon final, when Bob and Samantha Stosur beat Mike and Katarina Srebotnik 7-5, 6-4.
Match Of The Day
Australian Lleyton Hewitt, the 2001 champion, battled past Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4 in four hours and 35 minutes. “That's why you still play the game,” said Hewitt of the drama in the fifth set. “It all happens pretty quick when you're actually out there playing. Sometimes you wish you had a few more seconds to just sort of soak it up and enjoy the moment a little bit more.”
Roddick, Hewitt Come Full Circle
Roddick lauded Hewitt’s efforts in his second-round match Friday, calling the 31 year old “the best competitor I played against”. He then shared how they’d gone from not liking each other much initially to becoming friends. “Now we'll text each other back and forth after matches and stuff. It's funny, the cycle we were talking about earlier, how that's come full circle. I come in today and he's in the throes of a battle. Our lockers are right next to each other. He came in and he was really pumped up. It would be hard for me to respect what he's done in this game more than I do.”
