Finał Wimbledonu 2021 przeciw Matteo Berrettiniemu nie był łatwy dla Novaka Djokovicia. Serb roztrwonił wysokie prowadzenie w pierwszym secie i przegrał tę partię w tie breaku, ale w trzech kolejnych był lepszy i ostatecznie pokonał Włocha 6:7(4), 6:4, 6:4, 6:3.

Wcześniej wydawało mi się, że to poza zasięgiem. Ale wtedy zdałem sobie sprawę, że mogę tego dokonać - wyjawił.

Belgradczyk przyznał, że w niedzielę czuł na swoich barkach duży ciężar. - Jeśli jesteś rozdarty między tym, co jest teraz a tym, co w przyszłości, trudno jest utrzymać wysoką jakość gry. Zwykle wtedy gracze są spięci i nerwowi. I to mi się przydarzyło.


Zapytany, komu należy się miano tenisisty wszech czasów, Djoković odparł: - W moim przekonaniu jestem najlepszy i wierzę w to, bo w przeciwnym razie nie mówiłbym z taką pewnością o zdobywaniu tytułów wielkoszlemowych i tworzeniu historii.

- Ale niezależnie od tego, czy jestem najwybitniejszym tenisistą w historii, czy nie, pozostawiam tę debatę innym ludziom. Mówiłem już wcześniej, że trudno porównywać różne epoki w tenisie. Mamy inne rakiety, piłki, technologie. Ale to zaszczyt, że mogę być częścią takich rozważań - dodał.

34-latek ma nadzieję na kolejne sukcesy. - Wszystko się układa. A wiek to dla mnie tylko liczba. Nie czuję, że jestem stary. Oczywiście, na pewnym etapie musisz się odpowiednio dostosowywać, ale czuję, że teraz jestem prawdopodobnie najbardziej kompletnym tenisistą od początku mojej kariery - zaznaczył.

Novak Djoković wygrał Wimbledon i wykonał kolejny krok w kierunku zdobycia Złotego Wielkiego Szlema. Serb może jednak zrezygnować z walki o to osiągnięcie, bo nie jest pewny, czy wystąpi w igrzyskach olimpijskich w Tokio.

Złoty Wielki Szlem to wygranie w jednym sezonie wszystkich turniejów wielkoszlemowych oraz zdobycie złotego medalu olimpijskiego. W całej historii tenisa dokonała tego tylko Steffi Graf. Niemka w 1988 roku do triumfów w czterech imprezach Wielkiego Szlema dołożyła złoto igrzysk w Seulu.
W tym roku przed szansą na to osiągnięcie stoi Novak Djoković. Serb wygrał wielkoszlemowe Australian Open, Rolanda Garrosa i Wimbledon. Kolejny krok w kierunku zdobycia Złotego Wielkiego Szlema może postawić w igrzyskach w Tokio.

- Występ w igrzyskach olimpijskich był w moich planach, ale teraz jestem rozdarty. Biorąc pod uwagę to, co usłyszałem w ostatnich dniach, jest to sytuacja 50 na 50 - powiedział.

Serb waha się z powodu restrykcji, jakie będą obowiązywać podczas igrzysk. - Brak kibiców jest rozczarowujący. Słyszałem też, że w wiosce olimpijskiej będzie obowiązywało dużo ograniczeń - mówił.


- Prawdopodobnie nie będzie możliwości oglądania występów innych zawodników. Nie będę mógł zabrać ze sobą stringera (specjalista od naciągania rakiet - przyp. red.), który jest ważną częścią mojego zespołu. Ograniczono też liczbę osób, które będą mogły ze mną pojechać - wyliczył.

Djoković może dołączyć do gwiazd rozgrywek, które nie wystąpią w igrzyskach. Do Tokio nie pojadą m.in. Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Roberto Bautista, Serena Williams i Simona Halep.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has confirmed he will participate at this month's Tokyo Olympics as he looks to continue his dominant season in Asia.

Posting on Twitter, the Serbian star said: “Cannot disappoint my little friend Koujiro. I booked my flight for Tokyo and will proudly be joining #TeamSerbia for the Olympics.

"I am very proud to pack for Tokyo and join our national team in the fight for the brightest medals on the Olympic arenas. For me, the game for Serbia has always been a special joy and motivation and I will do my best to make us all happy! Let's go."


The 34-year-old has won the year's first three majors at the Australian Open (d. Medvedev), Roland Garros (d. Tsitsipas) and Wimbledon (d. Berrettini), keeping alive a historic opportunity to become the first man to ever to complete a golden Grand Slam. (WTA Tour legend Steffi Graf won a gold medal and all four majors in 1988.)

By winning his sixth Wimbledon title last Sunday, Djokovic joined Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal with 20 Grand Slam singles titles.

Djokovic, who became the first singles player to qualify for the 2021 Nitto ATP Finals this month, claimed a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics (d. Blake).

The top tennis player in the world is still on track for the calendar 'Golden Slam', having won all three majors so far this season. He says he feels great both physically and mentally.


Novak Djokovic is in a Tokyo 2020 state of mind.

And the world No.1 is feeling good.

"I feel great physically and mentally," Djokovic said as part of a Team Serbia press conference in Tokyo on Thursday evening (22 July). "I feel ready to perform at my best. I've had arguably the best Grand Slam season in my sport so far - winning three out of three Grand Slams. I could not have better preparation or better lead-up to an Olympic Games than I've had this year."

Djokovic won his 20th Grand Slam at Wimbledon earlier this month, matching Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal with a men's all-time record of 20 major titles.

Both Federer and Nadal withdrew from Tokyo due to injury.

Having won at the Australian Open and French Open earlier this year, as well, he is still on track for the 'Golden Slam' - winning all four majors and Olympic gold in one season - only done once before, by Steffi Graf in 1988.

"I'm not in touch with Steffi... but I have the utmost respect and admiration for Steffi," Djokovic told reporters. He added: "I would like to ask her how she did it."

"Of course for me it's a goal and dream... The champion's mentality that she possesses is definitely something that inspires me. Hopefully I will be able to use that in my upcoming [event]. When I was thinking about her ultimate achievement that she had... there's a slim chance that someone could make it again. But right now it seems more and more realistic for me. Of course, that's one of the goals and dreams."

Djokovic says he feels the support of the Serbian contingent, with 86 athletes in Tokyo, behind him. He won bronze at Beijing 2008, but has yet to claim an Olympic gold medal.

"The feeling is different, obviously, as an individual athlete I represent my country anywhere I go," he said. "But being a part of the Olympic Games, being a part of the team, even though I'm by myself on the tennis court, I still feel the team spirit is there. The support of the teammates and everyone involved int he Serbian team is there, so that gives you wings, so to say, to perform your best and try and reach the biggest heights in your respective sport."

Djokovic on 'Golden Slam' chase: 'It's still a very long way'
While all eyes are on history, Djokovic is taking things as he says, with a "cliché:" "One day at a time."

He will open his Olympic campaign against Bolivian Hugo Dellien, the world No. 139. The two have never met.

"Well, look, it's still a very long way to potential achievement, historic achievement. I put myself in a very good position," Djokovic said. "I will take things very slowly and cautiously and focus only on the next challenge. But this is kind of an approach that I really need to have, because in the past, I was probably fully experiencing that approach and that has backfired on me."

The 34-year-old Serbian is 34-3 on the 2021 season, having won four titles to bring his career total to 85. In addition to his Beijing bronze, Djokovic was fourth at London 2012, losing to Juan Martin Del Potro - and then lost to Del Potro again at Rio 2016 in a dramatic first-round encounter.

"I am relieved that Juan is not here," Djokovic joked of his longtime rival, the Argentine who has faced a myriad of injuries. Adding about Del Potro being back on the training court: "I am also very happy and very relieved to see him on the tennis court because I saw some images and videos of him hitting a tennis ball after many surgeries over the knees that he had any injuries. He's a great guy, great champion."

Djokovic has a potential clash with No.5 seed Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals, while Alexander Zverev is his potential semi-final foe and No.2 seed Daniil Medvedev anchors the bottom half of the draw. Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No.3 seed, is also on the bottom half.

"I know that there is a lot of things on the line," Djokovic said. "I know there's history on the line. I'm privileged and motivated to be in this position. I work very hard to be there with my team, of course. But, you know, let's talk about history if everything goes great here. I'm going to enjoy the tournament. So right now, it's all [of my] focus goes to the next challenge first."

Djokovic on Osaka: 'We can expect her to play on a high level'
Djokovic was asked about Japanese superstar Osaka Naomi, the four-time Grand Slam singles champion, who will compete in her first-ever Olympic Games.

"Osaka is a great champion that we have in our sport," he said. "Playing in her country without crowd is obviously not ideal for her. I'm sure that she wanted to have support and people behind her. It is what it is."

"But she and Nishikori [Kei] carry a lot of responsibility and weight on their shoulders for sure, playing in Japan. And I know that people expect a lot from them, but I'm sure that also the experience that they have, even though Naomi is relatively young, she's a [four-time] Grand Slam champion... she has a lot of experience playing at the highest level. I don't think that's going to cause a lot of trouble for her."

Goffin and Wawrinka will also miss the Canadian ATP Masters 1000 event
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, reigning US Open champion Dominic Thiem, 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up David Goffin and former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka have withdrawn from the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, the tournament announced on Friday.

“It would have been fantastic to have hosted Novak [Djokovic] at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers this year,” Tournament Director Karl Hale said according to a press release. “However, following a great run to his record-equalling 20th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and his participation at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, we understand his decision. We wish him all the very best for the rest of the season."

Djokovic is a four-time winner of Canada’s ATP Masters 1000 event. He has triumphed in Toronto twice.

Thiem is recovering from a wrist injury he suffered during the grass-court season, Goffin has an ankle injury and Wawrinka is on the road back from his second left foot surgery of the year, which he underwent last month.

“It’s a shame that Dominic [Thiem], David [Goffin] and Stan [Wawrinka] will miss out on the National Bank Open this year," Hale said. "We wish them speedy recoveries from their injuries and hope to see them competing again very soon. Hopefully, they will all be back in Toronto when we next host the ATP Tour.”

Second seed Medvedev also advances

Serbian star Novak Djokovic continued his quest for a historic Golden Grand Slam as he moved past Hugo Dellien 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday to reach the second round of the Tokyo Olympics.

The top seed has won the first three Grand Slam championships of the year and drew level with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on 20 Grand Slam titles after winning Wimbledon. Only WTA Tour legend Steffi Graf has won a gold medal and all four majors in one season, achieving this in 1988.

Djokovic did not face a break point against the Bolivian as he advanced in 63 minutes. The 34-year-old will next face big-hitting German Jan-Lennard Struff after he triumphed against Brazilian Thiago Monteiro 6-3, 6-4.

Daniil Medvedev had to work hard on Saturday, but he advanced to the second round with a 6-4, 7-6(8) victory against Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik.

The second seed saved three of the four break points he faced to triumph after one hour and 38 minutes. The ROC's Medvedev now leads the pair's ATP Head2Head series 3-0, and he has won all seven of their sets.

The World No. 2 will next play Indian Sumit Nagal, who outlasted Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4. This is Medvedev's first appearance in the Olympics.

Aslan Karatsev also advanced as he defeated American Tommy Paul 6-3, 6-2 in 76 minutes. The World No. 24 won 87 per cent (27/31) of his first-service points to set up a meeting with Frenchman Jeremy Chardy who overcame Chilean Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera 6-1, 7-6(4).

The 16th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was in action, and he ousted Portugal's Pedro Sousa 6-3, 6-0. The Spaniard will try to maintain his level against Aussie John Millman, who eliminated #NextGenATP Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-4.

There were also wins for France’s Ugo Humbert and Italian Fabio Fognini. Humbert beat Spaniard Pablo Andujar 7-6(3), 6-1, while Fognini downed Japan’s Yuichi Sugita 6-4, 6-3.
