Flashback: When Andy Murray took top honours in 2009
Spoiler:
In 2009, a new king was crowned at Rogers Cup: Andy Murray of Great Britain. A tournament regular, Murray had never gotten past the semis since his debut at the event in 2006. A year earlier, he had fallen to Rafael Nadal of Spain in an attempt to secure a spot in the final.
Upon his arrival in Montreal in 2009, Murray’s confidence was at an all-time high. He had already taken home the titles at Doha, Rotterdam, Miami and Queen’s earlier in the season and was fresh off a semi-final run at Wimbledon .
Benefiting from a first-round bye, the Brit went on to secure consecutive victories over Jérémy Chardy, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Nikolay Davydenko. In the semis, he overpowered Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who had caused a surprise upset when he eliminated Roger Federer in the previous round. Against the Frenchman, Murray’s dominant play did not waver as he secured himself a spot in the final, all without dropping a set.
The stage was set for a showdown against Juan Martin del Potro. While he may not have been as prominent on the tennis scene as Federer, Nadal or Djokovic, del Potro remained a force to be reckoned with. The world no. 6 had previously appeared in the semi-finals at Roland-Garros and had collected his second title of the season in Washington in the weeks leading up to Rogers Cup.
After letting the first set slip away, Murray made a masterful comeback in his three-set victory 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-1. His win ended the Argentinian’s eleven match winning streak and allowed him to hoist his very first Rogers Cup trophy.
In 2011, Novak Djokovic participated in his fifth Rogers Cup—his third in Montreal. Playing at the top of his game, he seized the opportunity to take home his second title on Canadian soil.
The previous year, with the Top 4 players competing in the semi-finals, he fell to Roger Federer. But in 2011, in search of a second crown here in Montreal, the Serb seemed invincible.
Djokovic got his season off to a roaring start, claiming seven back-to-back titles before suffering his first defeat of the year at the hands of Roger Federer in the semi-finals at Roland-Garros. Just a few weeks later, he bounced back and triumphed at Wimbledon. He arrived in Montreal with eight new titles—including two Grand Slams—and only one loss.
His dominance was obvious from the start, as he completely overpowered Nikolay Davydenko, Marin Cilic, Gaël Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He sauntered into the final without having dropped a single set.
The ultimate showdown against Mardy Fish proved tough but, true to form, “Nole” found a way to elevate his game. He secured a three-set win by the score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and added a ninth piece of hardware to his 2011 haul.

Fish had had a good start to the hard court season, winning the title in Atlanta and making an appearance in the final in Los Angeles.
Djokovic has since added two more Rogers Cup crowns to his trophy case: 2012 and 2016 in Toronto. Only Ivan Lendl has done better: he holds six Canadian Masters 1000 titles. Will Djokovic close in on the record this year?
Flashback: Canada shines in 2013, and so does Rafa
Spoiler:
The 2013 Rogers Cup belonged to Rafael Nadal, who claimed his third crown on Canadian soil in as many finals.
Four years ago, many were surprised to see the Spaniard raise the trophy in Montreal. Despite the seven titles he racked up earlier in the season, Rafa had had an untimely first-round exit at Wimbledon and Rogers Cup was his first tournament since the stunning defeat.
Nadal, the tournament’s fourth seed, overcame Jesse Levine, Jerzy Janowicz and Marinko Matosevic on his way to to securing a spot in the semi-finals. A major challenge was waiting for him in the next round, World No. 1 and three-time Rogers Cup champion Novak Djokovic. At the conclusion of their spectacular three-set contest, Nadal got the last word in the tiebreak, winning 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2).
The final pitted Rafa against Canadian sensation Milos Raonic. In the end, it took the King of Clay only 68 minutes to dispose of his rival by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Despite the Spaniard’s win, it was Milos who had everyone talking. He became the first Canadian to play in a Rogers Cup final since Robert Bédard, who had done so 55 years earlier. The Canadian’s appearance in the final propelled him into the ATP Top 10 for the first time in his career, making him the youngest member of the elite group at just 22 years old.
When the homegrown talent stepped onto the court, the Montreal crowd welcomed him with a standing ovation. “That was one of the most special feelings I’ve had in my career to this date,” Raonic said. “I even got a little bit of goosebumps from that. I’m very, very grateful to have that memory and that experience here.”
In 2013, Raonic wasn’t the only one to make a mark in Canadian tennis history. In his semi-final match-up, Raonic went head-to-head against compatriot Vasek Pospisil in the first Canadian semi-final of an ATP Tour event since Andrew Sznajder took on Martin Wostenholme in Rio in 1990.
Pospisil and Raonic disputed a hard fought match, to the great delight of the Montreal fans. When their electrifying clash finally came to an end, Raonic had claimed the victory in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4).
Will our Canadian players break new ground on the courts in Montreal this summer? Will Rafa keep building on his impressive 2017 season? Find out when the best players come to town from August 4 to 13!

Drugi raz z rzędu by taka sytuacja miała miejsce. Nie sądzę jednak, żeby obie organizacje (Rogers Cup Masters i ATP) do tego dopuściły.

A jak niby mieliby do tego nie dopuścić? Przymuszą do do grania Murraya, zmienią zasady, żeby musiał grać Federer, a Djokovicowi sprowadzą szamana, żeby go uzdrowił?

Zawsze można się jakoś dogadać.
Mi się wydaje, że jednak zbyt wielu wycofań nie będzie.

Roger Federer confirms he will play Rogers Cup presented by National Bank
Spoiler:
The 19-time Grand Slam champion will return to Montreal for the first time since 2011
Tennis Canada announced Tuesday that Swiss Roger Federer has confirmed he will play in the 2017 edition of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank. It will be his first trip to Montreal since 2011.
“I’m happy to be coming back to Montreal, as I have not had the chance to play there for many years,” said Federer. “This 2017 season has been very exciting and I am really looking forward to being back on the court on the ATP Tour.”
To date, the 2017 season has been a memorable one for Federer, highlighted by the 18th and 19th Grand Slam titles of his career at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Currently ranked no. 3 in the world, he was also crowned champion at Indian Wells, Miami, and Halle.
“We are obviously very happy to announce the return of the great Roger Federer, said Eugène Lapierre, Tournament Director of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank. “We are celebrating today and the celebrations will continue over the next few days especially since Federer will celebrate his birthday with us on August 8. I am certain that the Montreal fans will give him the welcome he deserves.”
Federer will be seeking his third Rogers Cup title, and first in Montreal. He won the tournament in Toronto in 2004 and 2006.
No proszę, czyli jednak zobaczymy Rogera w Kanadzie.
