Roland Garros Wednesday Diary: Federer, Djokovic Hail Baker
Paris, France
Brian Baker saw his run come to an end in five sets against Gilles Simon on Wednesday.
ATPWorldTour.com takes a look at the news and talking points at Roland Garros on Wednesday.
Djokovic, Federer Hail Baker
Brian Baker’s remarkable comeback story took another twist on Wednesday when he came back from two sets down to force Gilles Simon to a deciding fifth set. Although the American subsequently lost, his peers on the ATP World Tour, no less than Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, have been mightily impressed by his performances in recent weeks.
"I hadn't heard about him until last week, so next thing you know he went from 700 to top 150, which is amazing, such a short time," said Federer. "Such stories are amazing, that guys come back and give it a shot. Next thing you know you're in the Top 100 or 150. He's again here in the second round and made the finals in Nice. I'm excited for him. It's a great story. It's good for American news, in particular, as well. I think that's nice. I hope I get a chance to practise with him once or even a match to see how good he is."
Djokovic added, "I was pleasantly surprised with his comeback, and with his results. He won a couple of Challengers from qualification, if I'm not wrong. Now in qualifying in Nice and reaching the finals. Actually, he was one of the best if not I think the best junior in the world. He won the Orange Bowl when I played, I remember. He's a very, very talented player. He always had a very smart game, a variety of shots. I haven't seen him play, though, this year, but, it's great to see him back."
Federer Reflects
Asked to compare playing against three different generations on the ATP World Tour, Roger Federer consented to give the one-minute answer to a subject he declared he could write a book on.
"I really enjoyed my time coming up playing against sort of heroes of mine and guys I knew from TV. That was, for me, just really exciting. I couldn't believe it. It was like surreal at times. Afterwards playing a new generation, I think that was exciting, because you pushed up through juniors and all of a sudden you're playing on the centre courts in front of many fans and with live TV and everybody judging you.
"Then it takes some getting used to playing the younger guys coming through, because you don't know yet how good they're going to really be. And eventually they’re really great, like Rafa and Novak. I was happy I was able to play through so many different players and great champions already, and I'm sure I will still play against them more in the future."
Troicki Laid Bare
In a revealing question and answer session with RolandGarros.com, Viktor Troicki revealed that he has become something of an "expert fibber" due to his dislike for early morning practice sessions.
"The worst excuse was when I said absolutely nothing! I stayed in bed without even telling my team," said the Serbian. "My coaches were on the court, they were ready to get to work and I just played dead, I stayed in bed (laughs)."
The Belgrade native also confessed to a teenage crush on Britney Spears – "I admit, I’m not proud of it, but back in the day she was pretty popular" - and recalled a star struck moment with Andre Agassi. "Once, I was getting my ankle looked at and Andre came in. He started talking to me – he asked me how things were going and gave me some advice. I was star struck. I didn’t know how to react. It was a bit embarrassing because I didn’t know what to say."
Match Of The Day
Brian Baker looked down and out against Gilles Simon in their second-round clash on Philippe Chatrier Court, but the gutsy American, playing his 10th match in 12 days, fought back to force a deciding set. Simon recovered, though, much to the delight of the French crowd, to claim the win with a 6-0 victory in the final set.
"I think when I get back to the hotel room at night, it kind of sinks in a little bit," said Baker, who last week reached the final in Nice. "I can understand maybe that I'm accomplishing some pretty cool things right now. This was definitely the biggest thing that I've done since coming back, and probably the last couple weeks have been the biggest things I've accomplished in my career so far."
"It was a very difficult match," said Simon. "I was feeling good on the court, two sets up playing very nice tennis, and then he played also some amazing shots and he played really good the third and fourth sets. It was difficult at the beginning of the fifth, but I managed to play a little bit better. I started to miss a few shots, and finally I broke him the first game, and it was really, really important."

Cudownym ozdrowieniem bym tego nie nazwał, po prostu Andy w pewnym stopniu wrócił do swojej normalnej gry, ponieważ medykamenty jakie zaaplikował mu trainer zaczęły działać.DUN I LOVE pisze:Murray nagle ozdrowiał czy Jarkko coś sobie zrobił?
