Clijsters Tips Bryans After Ending Career
Playing mixed doubles with Bob Bryan, Kim Clijsters and the left-handed American lost a thriller in the second round, falling to Bruno Soares and Ekaterina Makarova 2-6, 6-4, 12-10. Clijsters played the final match of her career, following defeats in women’s singles and doubles.
In her post-match interview on court, Clijsters said, “I couldn't ask for a better way to finish here. And I hope Bob and Mike win the doubles title.”
After saving four match points to the delight of a packed house on Court 17, Clijsters and Bryan finally went down when the Belgian’s forehand return off of Makarova's serve found the net.
Federer Surprises Himself
In his straight-sets victory over Fernando Verdasco in the third round, top seed and five-time US Open champion Roger Federer won 26 of his 27 net points.
Upon hearing the stat in his presser, Federer said, “I had no clue my stats were that good coming in. Fernando did have some good chances for good passing shots. Looking back, I don't remember missing too many volleys and overheads. Probably half the time I didn't have to volley because it was hard to hit a good pass. It was windy. Usually when I do come in, it's probably on one I can be very offensive on. “
Murray’s Menu
Following his close four-set encounter with Feliciano Lopez, No. 3 seed Andy Murray was asked if he would be eating steak for dinner.
“[I’ll] go for sushi tonight, I think,” responded Murray. “We actually had steak a couple nights ago. Maybe tomorrow I'll do that. For dinner, I'll have fish one night, chicken the next, then steak. Try not to have the same thing every day. [It would] probably be good to get some steak tomorrow.”
Milos Motoring
Since trailing Santiago Giraldo two sets to one in his first-round match, 15th seed Milos Raonic has reeled off eight straight sets to book his first fourth-round berth at the US Open. He impressed in his latest victory over James Blake, hitting 29 aces and breaking the American wild card five times.
“I feel like I have the ability to be more dangerous than most players when I have the ball on my racquet, especially out of my hand on a serve,” said Raonic. “That just puts a lot of pressure on my opponents if I'm serving well. “
Olympians Get Involved
Team USA Olympic medallists Dara Torres, Time Morehouse and Cullen Jones joined fitness buff Bob Harper of The Biggest Loser and actress Christine Taylor for a 10 and Under Tennis Clinic on Saturday morning. The event kicked off National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month as part of USTA”s involvement with the initiative ‘Let’s Move!’ launched by First Lady Michelle Obama.
Match Of The Day
World No. 4 Andy Murray topped Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(4) in three hours and 53 minutes to win their third-round meeting. “The last few sets were tough,” Murray said. “I just played a little bit better at the end of the tie-breaks, a little bit more solid than him, and that was the difference.”
