Both men will be in action in Rome, as will 19-year-old lefty Learner Tien and rising Italian Cina. The 18-year-old home favourite made his tour-level debut in Miami, where he ousted Francisco Comesana before falling to Grigor Dimitrov. Fonseca could face the man he defeated at the Australian Open, Andrey Rublev, in the second round.

Jakub Mensik maintained his impressive form at ATP Masters 1000 level this season with a clinical opening-round win Saturday at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

The #NextGenATP star overcame Italian Matteo Gigante 7-6(4), 7-5 amid a testing atmosphere on Grand Stand Arena to reach the third round. Mensik, who claimed his maiden ATP Tour trophy in Miami in March, now boasts an 11-2 record at Masters 1000 level in 2025.

With his one-hour, 48-minute victory, the 19-year-old Mensik became just the third teenager to advance to the men’s singles third round in Rome this decade, joining Italians Lorenzo Musetti and Jannik Sinner (2020).



In his maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head clash with Gigante, Mensik was imperious in all departments, but he could particularly rely on his trusty serve when required. The Czech fired nine aces and did not face a break point, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

Mensik, who is at a career-high No. 21 in the PIF ATP Rankings, will next face Fabian Marozsan, who earlier upset 16th seed Andrey Rublev.

#NextGenATP Mensik ousts Marozsan, moves closer to Top 20

Jakub Mensik is on the brink of hitting another significant milestone.

The #NextGenATP Czech on Monday downed Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 7-6(2) to reach the fourth round at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome. Mensik converted three of six break points he earned and then produced a rock-solid second-set tie-break to seal an 89-minute triumph at the clay ATP Masters 1000.

With his 12th Masters 1000 match win of 2025, Miami champion Mensik jumped two spots to No. 19 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. He is well-placed to crack the Top 20 in the 52-week PIF ATP Rankings for the first time after Rome, where he has become the first Czech man to reach the Round of 16 since Tomas Berdych in 2017.

“It just feels great. I was kind of finding myself in my first match, and in the first set of this match,” said Mensik. “In the second set I was feeling a little bit better. I was struggling [a bit], so I’m glad that the main thing in the match was that I stayed focused, I stayed calm. I was trusting that I would find a way. Fabian is a great champion, and he is playing very well, especially here in Rome, so I knew it was going to be a tough one.”


Mensik was particularly pleased with the way he responded to being broken when serving for the match at 5-3 in the second set. He also let slip a match point on return in the next game, but composed himself in the tie-break to clinch his straight-sets win.

“In the first set I lost my serve in the first game, but then I broke him in the game after,” said Marozsan. “Every time it’s super tough in the set to stay with your serve. Unfortunately it came when it was 5-3 for me [in the second set], but it is what it is. I didn’t have any chance in that game, so I thought OK, ‘I am set up and there is a tie-break [to play]’. I just stayed focused and I’m glad I got the W after the second set.”

With victory in his maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head clash against Marozsan, Mensik also solidified his position in seventh in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin as he chases a debut appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals. The big-serving Czech, who is now 19-8 for the season according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, will take on 30th seed Hubert Hurkacz for a Rome quarter-final spot after the Pole defeated Marcos Giron 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.

Mensik and Hurkacz’s potential last-eight opponents are Alex de Minaur and Tommy Paul. The seventh-seeded De Minaur eased to a 6-4, 6-4 triumph against lucky loser Hugo Dellien in the first match of the day on Grand Stand Arena, while 11th seed Paul notched a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 victory against Tomas Machac, his first win in three tour-level meetings with the Czech.

Paul will also have to get off the mark in his rivalry with De Minaur if he is to continue his Rome run. De Minaur leads the American 5-0 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series, although they have not faced off since the 2023 season.
