ATP Bastad: Casper Ruud wygrał mecz młodych-zdolnych. Leonardo Mayer odpadł w I rundzie
Spoiler:
19-letni Casper Ruud w trzech setach pokonał 21-letniego Jaume Munara w I rundzie rozgrywanego na kortach ziemnych turnieju ATP World Tour 250 w Bastad. Z imprezą pożegnał się rozstawiony z numerem szóstym Leonardo Mayer.
ATP Bastad: emocje po Wimbledonie. Diego Schwartzman i Pablo Carreno gwiazdami turnieju w szwedzkim kurorcie

Gasquet stages comeback against Melzer
#NextGenATP Norwegian Casper Ruud recorded the biggest match win of his career on Thursday with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over seventh seed David Ferrer, the 2007, 2012 and 2017 champion from Spain, for a place in the SkiStar Swedish Open quarter-finals.
The 19-year-old Ruud won nine straight games — from a 3-5 deficit in the first set to a 5-0 lead in the second set — against No. 39-ranked Ferrer in the 76-minute encounter. Ferrer, 36, will now drop out of the Top 50 in the ATP Rankings for the first time since 31 January 2005 (No. 53).
It’s the first time Ruud has won back-to-back matches at an ATP World Tour tournament since February 2017, when he advanced to the Rio Open presented by Claro semi-finals (l. to Carreno Busta).
Ruud is currently in 10th place in the ATP Race To Milan for one of eight places at the Next Gen ATP Finals in November. He will next challenge fourth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who recovered from a set and 1-3 down on his tournament debut to beat Gerald Melzer of Austria 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Last month, Gasquet lifted the 15th ATP World Tour trophy of his career at the Libema Open (d. Chardy).

Fognini
Third-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini booked his place in the quarter-finals after beating Swedish #NextGenATP wild card Mikael Ymer 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and five minutes.
Ymer, having swept through the first set, recovered from 1-3 down in the second set and had a break point chance for a 5-4 lead, but Fognini held serve in a 20-point game. Fognini broke to love in the sixth game of the decider and went on to deny 19-year-old Ymer the biggest win of his career.
Fognini goes on to challenge Argentina’s Federico Delbonis, who broke serve four times to beat eighth-seeded Australian John Millman 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 33 minutes. Delbonis reached the Argentina Open semi-finals (l. to Bedene) in February.
Norway's Casper Ruud, who beat Spanish legend David Ferrer on Thursday to reach the SkiStar Swedish Open quarter-finals, has learned a lot in the past 17 months, since he made his first ATP World Tour semi-final at the Rio Open presented by Claro in February 2017.
He's learned how to train like Rafael Nadal, how to better take care of his body and how to push himself every week. But more than anything, Ruud has learned that he needs to bring a different mindset to his tennis. He needs to be more greedy.
Last year, Ruud, in just his third tour-level event, sprinted to the Rio semi-finals, winning his first three ATP World Tour matches at the 500-level event. He became the youngest semi-finalist on the ATP World Tour since Borna Coric in Basel 2014 and the lowest-ranked player to make a 500-level semi-final since Alexander Zverev (No. 285) in Hamburg in 2014.
But then Ruud relaxed. Instead of building on the best week of his young career, for the rest of 2017, he won only four more tour-level matches.

“I was really proud of myself, which you should be, but I was maybe a bit too happy with playing good that week... I wasn't maybe greedy enough to go for many good weeks in a row,” Ruud told ATPWorldTour.com.
“Of course you can be happy and proud over some good wins, but there's always another match, and usually the day after, if you win. You always have to be ready and greedy to get that win.”
Ruud will try to practise that approach on Friday when he looks to return to an ATP World Tour semi-final for the first time since his deep run in Brazil. The 19-year-old Ruud will face fourth seed Richard Gasquet, who beat Austrian Gerald Melzer 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Ruud's win on Thursday, besides placing him into his second ATP World Tour quarter-final, was also extra special because of who it came against. Ferrer, a three-time Bastad champion (2007, 2012, 2017), is one of a handful of players Ruud tries to emulate on court. Ruud's former coach Pedro Rico suggested that Ruud try to model Ferrer and Rafael Nadal's effort.
“I really look up to his attitude and enjoy watching him play,” Ruud said of Ferrer. “He's always serious... He's one of the greatest fighters who's ever played.”
Ruud hasn't faced Nadal yet, but he's trained with the No. 1 player in the ATP Rankings. In April 2017, Ruud worked with Rafa in Mallorca for a week.
“The first two days were really tough, I was really tired,” Ruud admitted.
He also realised what the rest of the ATP World Tour has known for the past 15 years. “It was not easy to keep up with Rafa on clay and not get so tired,” he said.
Ruud and his former coach Rico have stopped working together, and Ruud now works with and travels with his father, Christian Ruud, a former Top 40 player in the ATP Rankings who retired in 2001.

In Bastad, Casper Ruud will try to emulate Ferrer and his father. Dad reached the 1995 Bastad final, and if Casper Ruud can win two more matches and match Dad's achievement, he'll play for his first ATP World Tour title and climb further up the ATP Race To Milan.
The top seven players in the Race will qualify automatically for the Next Gen ATP Finals, to be held 6-10 November in Milan, while the eighth spot will be reserved for the winner of an all-Italian qualifier tournament to be held just prior to the prestigious 21-and-under event.
Ruud had to watch the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals on TV last year. He's currently in 10th place in the Race, three spots away from making his debut at the Fiera Milano.
“[The Race] is something that I think all the under-21 guys are following,” Ruud said. “It would be a huge thing and a huge achievement to get there this year because there are so many good players under 21 these days.”

#NextGenATP Norwegian Casper Ruud will face fifth seed Joao Sousa in the second round. Ruud beat Argentine lucky loser Carlos Berlocq 6-1, 6-2, and Sousa prevailed past Argentina's Guido Pella 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
#NextGenATP Norwegian Casper Ruud continued to excel at the Rio Open presented by Claro on Thursday. Having reached his maiden ATP semi-final at this event in 2017, the 20-year-old defeated fifth seed Joao Sousa 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to put himself into the quarter-finals again in Rio de Janeiro.
“I always play far away from home, but Rio always makes me feel very welcome,” said Ruud. “I feel the atmosphere here and it’s great to have the crowd on my side.”
Sousa dug deep after facing a break point to trail 1-5 in the final set, but Ruud hung tough to advance after two hours and 11 minutes. The Norwegian, currently No. 135 in the ATP Rankings, will make his Top 100 debut on Monday if he defeats Laslo Djere of Serbia on Friday.
“It’s a great chance for another 500-level semifinal,” said Ruud. “[Djere] is maybe the favorite in the [ATP] Rankings, but I’ve shown some good tennis before here and hopefully I can again."
Ruud enjoyed success on the ATP Challenger Tour last year by finishing runner-up at $50,000 events in Braga and Francavilla. He also excelled on bigger stages by reaching the quarter-finals last July at the Swedish Open and coming through qualifying at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and US Open, advancing to the second round at the first two majors of the year.

Djere, who defeated top seed Dominic Thiem in the opening round, continued his inspired tennis with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Taro Daniel of Japan. The World No. 90 didn’t face a break point against Daniel and won 83 per cent (20/24) of his first-serve points.
Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay produced a statement win over recent Cordoba Open winner Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina 6-1, 6-4. The 2016 champion wasted no time getting down to business on Quadra Guga Kuerten, dropping just one point on serve (16/17) in the opening set. He continued to dominate the baseline rallies in the second set and secured the win after just 68 minutes.
Awaiting Cuevas in the quarter-finals is Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain, who scored an impressive 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 comeback victory over Federico Delbonis of Argentina. Delbonis served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, but Ramos-Vinolas rallied to advance after two hours and 20 minutes.
The Spaniard improves his FedEx ATP Head2Head against Delbonis to 2-3. Ramos-Vinolas trails his FedEx ATP Head2Head with Cuevas 1-6 and the Uruguayan has prevailed in their past five matches.
Bellucci & Dutra Silva Upset Top Seeds
Wild card pairing Thomaz Bellucci and Rogerio Dutra Silva won an all-Brazilian quarter-final battle to upset top seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares 6-2, 6-7(6), 10-5. Bellucci and Dutra Silva squandered two match points at 6/4 in the second-set tie-break, but recovered to advance in one hour and 30 minutes. They'll play Roman Jebavy and Andres Molteni, who defeated Marcelo Demoliner and Frederik Nielsen 3-6, 6-4, 10-3.
Second seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah scored a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 win over British pair Luke Bambridge and Jonny O'Mara. Next up for the Colombian duo in the semi-finals are Maximo Gonzalez and Nicolas Jarry, who outlasted third seeds Nikola Mektic and Horacio Zeballos 4-6, 7-6(5), 12-10.

#NextGenATP Ruud Continues Love Affair With Brazil In Sao Paulo
Spoiler:
Djere ousts Auger-Aliassime in Rio rematch
Casper Ruud may be Norwegian, but Brazil is becoming like a second home. The #NextGenATP player defeated Bolivian Hugo Dellien 6-1, 6-1 on Friday in just 54 minutes to reach the semi-finals of the Brasil Open.
“Everything worked out today. It was really my day. He was a tough opponent and he was a very good player, so I had to play unbelievable to win with a score like this, 6-1, 6-1,” Ruud said. “I didn’t expect that to happen. I just tried to focus on every point, every point was important and I guess the margins were on my side and I played a good match.”
Ruud is just one win from reaching his maiden ATP Tour final, bidding to become the second Norwegian to do so in the Open Era after his father, Christian Ruud, who made the championship match in Bastad in 1995. The younger Ruud is into his second tour-level semi-final, after making the last four in Rio de Janeiro two years ago.
In fact, nine of Ruud’s 22 tour-level wins (22-22) have come in Brazil. The 20-year-old, who will crack the Top 100 of the ATP Rankings on Monday for the first time, also advanced to the quarter-finals in Rio this year, and both of his semi-final appearances have come in the country.
Ruud did not face break point against Dellien, winning 57 per cent of his return points and converting on five of his eight break chances. Ruud will face Chilean Christian Garin, who defeated fourth seed Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 47 minutes.
“It’s nice to win easily, but you also gain confidence when you win tough matches. Even though he’s played longer than me, I’m sure he’s ready for a good fight and I’ll be ready for everything tomorrow,” Ruud said of Garin, who is also pursuing his first ATP Tour final. “I’ll do everything I can to be ready. I think it’ll be a good match. Both of us are young and playing for our first final at an ATP [Tour event], so it will be an open match, I think.”
In a rematch of last week’s Rio Open presented by Claro final, Laslo Djere once again defeated #NextGenATP Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Djere, the only tour-level champion remaining in the Sao Paulo draw, had not reached an ATP Tour final before triumphing in Rio. But now, the Serbian will have a chance to reach a championship match for the second time in as many weeks when he faces third seed Guido Pella. The Argentine ousted compatriot Marco Trungelliti 6-0, 63 in one hour and 20 minutes.
Pella will try to reach his fifth ATP Tour final. The left-hander has not capitalised on any of those opportunities, and he is still in search of his first title.
