Nicolas Jarry fought hard to overcome Portugal's Henrique Rocha and the wild card's home support Wednesday at the Millennium Estoril Open. The Chilean won 6-7(13), 6-3, 6-4 after two hours and five minutes in front of an energetic crowd at the ATP Challenger Tour 175 event.
Jarry let slip four set points in a marathon opener, which lasted 73 minutes, but the seventh seed regrouped and relied on his booming serve. The 29-year-old finished the match having won 75 per cent of his first-serve points, compared to Rocha's 62 per cent, according to Infosys ATP Stats. The former No. 16 in the PIF ATP Rankings will next meet anther Portuguese player in Gastao Elias.
Jesper de Jong delivered the upset of the day in Estoril, ousting eighth seed Joao Fonseca 6-2, 7-5, handing the Brazilian his first Challenger loss of the season (10-1).
"I played one of my best performances ever I think," said the 24-year-old De Jong. "I came out flying and after I won the first game, the nerves went down. I managed to play without many mistakes."
