Raonic to face 19-year-old Kecmanovic, Thiem to play Monfils
Quarter-final action gets underway Thursday at the 2019 BNP Paribas Open with No. 13 seed Milos Raonic against Serbian lucky loser Miomir Kecmanovic. Raonic, the 2016 runner-up (l. to Djokovic), is making his fifth straight appearance in the Indian Wells quarter-finals. The 19-year-old Kecmanovic is through to an ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final for the first time.
Raonic won their lone FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting in January at the Brisbane International. "He plays fast and flat off both sides," said the Canadian. "He tries to take time away from me. I remember a few times I was a little bit too passive, but there is a few things I feel I could do better... It's going to be important that I can sort of try to take away his rhythm and give him a few different looks."
Kecmanovic, who entered the BNP Paribas Open with a 1-4 tour-level record in his career, is the youngest quarter-finalist at the tournament since 19-year-old Michael Chang in 1991. The World No. 130 is the lowest-ranked quarter-finalist at Indian Wells since then-No. 239 Ivo Karlovic in 2011. He is also the first lucky loser to reach the quarter-finals here since Indian Wells served as the inaugural ATP Masters 1000 event in 1990.

During Thursday's night session, seventh seed Dominic Thiem will look to maintain his perfect FedEx ATP Head2Head record (4-0) against No. 18 seed Gael Monfils. Two years ago in Indian Wells, Thiem won their Round of 16 match in straight sets.
"He has a very good season so far; won Rotterdam, played good Dubai," said Thiem. "When he's on, I think everybody knows what he's capable of. Hard to hit a winner against him. He's so fast and he can also put a lot of pressure. It's going to be a tough match and completely different than today, and for sure also great fun."
Monfils is 15-3 in 2019, including his eighth ATP Tour title in February at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament (d. Wawrinka).
