Following early upsets at the US Open, three Americans — Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe — have a big opportunity to make a move in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin.

Fritz reached the semi-finals at last year's Nitto ATP Finals, while his countrymen have an opportunity to move into qualifying position with a big run at the season's final major.

With early exits by fifth-placed Stefanos Tsitsipas and seventh-placed Holger Rune, eighth-placed Fritz has a big chance to consolidate his standing. Into the third round at Flushing Meadows, the American currently has 2,740 points. Another win would put him at 2,830 points and a run to the quarter-finals would give him 3,010 points, moving him within 45 points of Rune.
Fritz will play Jakub Mensik on the Czech's 18th birthday Friday and if he wins, would not face a seeded opponent in the fourth round. Second seed Novak Djokovic is his projected quarter-final opponent.

Two-time Nitto ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev is in ninth place, just 35 points behind Fritz, putting him in a similar position to the American. The German has reached the semi-finals and final in his past two US Open appearances.

When 10th-placed Casper Ruud lost on Wednesday evening, that opened the door for players behind him to surge, particularly those on the bottom half of the draw.

Twelfth-placed Tommy Paul and 13th-placed Frances Tiafoe are the highest-ranked players in their quarter of the draw and could meet in the quarter-finals. A semi-final yields a player 720 points at Grand Slam tournaments. Such a gain would put either man firmly in Turin contention.

Alex de Minaur, who is in the top half of the draw, is in 11th place in the Live Race. Like Paul and Tiafoe, the recent Toronto finalist is also trying to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time.

The 2020 champion joins Alcaraz and Djokovic in Turin
Daniil Medvedev on Monday became the third player to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, which will be held in Turin from 12-19 November. The 27-year-old joins Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic at the season finale.

Medvedev will compete in the year-end championships for the fifth consecutive year after defeating Alex de Minaur to make the US Open quarter-finals. He won the Nitto ATP Finals in 2020 and reached the final in 2021.

The five-time qualifier has earned his place at the Pala Alpitour with a consistent season during which he has lifted five ATP Tour trophies, including two ATP Masters 1000 triumphs.

“After Rome you kind of know I'm probably there. It's just nice to have it official, to kind of know. I can just stay at home and still go to Turin, which is very close from me. Would be a nice trip,” Medvedev joked. “That's a nice feeling to be there that early, probably together with Carlos and Novak. I think that's only second time I’ve qualified that early… Happy to be there fifth time in a row, and hopefully many more.”

From the start of Rotterdam in February, Medvedev won 26 of 27 matches. He earned crowns in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai. After losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells final, he emerged victorious in Miami.

The 27-year-old also enjoyed a breakthrough on clay. Medvedev went 10-3 on the surface and claimed his first title in Rome, where he lost just one set en route to the trophy.

According to Infosys ATP Stats, the former World No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings has won 53 matches this year, second on the ATP Tour behind only Alcaraz. It is the third time he has earned at least 50 tour-level victories in a season (2019, 2021).

Medvedev owns a 9-7 record at the Nitto ATP Finals.

Medvedev’s US Open semi-final triumph on Friday night against race leader Alcaraz has opened the door for the 27-year-old as he looks to haul in his two rivals. Should Medvedev defeat Djokovic in Sunday's championship match to claim his second crown at Flushing Meadows, he would move to 7,390 points in the Live Race, within 785 points of Alcaraz in first and 755 of Djokovic in second.

That would raise the prospect of a three-way battle playing out across the final few months of the season to become ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by Pepperstone. It would also leave Medvedev full of confidence heading into a part of the season in which he has historically excelled.

The World No. 3 is a former champion at the final two ATP Masters 1000 events of the year, the Rolex Shanghai Masters (where Medvedev won in 2019) and the Rolex Paris Masters (2020). He was also the 2020 champion at the Nitto ATP Finals, where he will compete for the fifth consecutive year after sealing his qualification for the prestigious season finale last Monday.

Standing in Medvedev’s way of making his move in New York, of course, is seven-time year-end No. 1 Djokovic. Should the Serbian clinch his record-extending 24th major title on Sunday, he would leapfrog Alcaraz to lead the Live Race and simultaneously open a clear 2,355-point lead on Medvedev.

Serbian leads second-placed Alcaraz by 770 points
Novak Djokovic boosted his hopes of securing the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by Pepperstone for a record-extending eighth time when he clinched his 24th major title at the US Open on Sunday.

Djokovic entered the final in New York knowing defeat against Daniil Medvedev would leave him trailing Carlos Alcaraz in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin. His advantage against third-placed Medvedev would have also been cut to 755 points.

The Serbian has now given himself some breathing room, though, with his straight-sets victory against the 27-year-old Medvedev lifting him to first in the Live Race To Turin on 8,945 points, 770 points ahead of second-placed Carlos Alcaraz (8,175). The 36-year-old is 2,355 points clear of Medvedev (6,590), who qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals following his fourth-round win at the US Open.

Andrey Rublev has also climbed one place to fifth (3,640) in the Live Race To Turin after reaching the quarter-finals at the hard-court major. The 25-year-old is aiming to qualify for the prestigious year-end event for the fourth consecutive year.

Two-time Nitto ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev has moved to within the qualification cut after jumping to eighth (3,030). The German, who lost against Alcaraz in the quarter-finals, is 20 points ahead of ninth-placed Taylor Fritz (3,010).

With the ATP Tour entering the Asian Swing, the Pepperstone ATP Live Race To Turin continues to heat up.

Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev have already punched their tickets for the Nitto ATP Finals, with a number of stars hoping to perform well over the coming weeks in a bid to join them in Turin. Jannik Sinner is currently fourth in the Live Race To Turin on 4,365 points and looks in a good position to qualify for the prestigious year-end event for the first time.

The Italian, who won his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Toronto last month, competed on home soil in Turin as an alternate two years ago. Sinner’s next scheduled to compete in Beijing later this month.

Behind Sinner there are just 630 points separating fifth-placed Andrey Rublev (3,640 points) and ninth-placed Taylor Fritz (3,010 points). Rublev is aiming to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held from 12-19 November, for the fourth consecutive year, while Fritz was a semi-finalist at the event in 2022.

Alexander Zverev (3,030 points) is currently just inside the cut in eighth. The two-time champion will look to build on his US Open quarter-final run in the coming weeks. Stefanos Tsitsipas, sixth (3,570 points), and Holger Rune, seventh (3,055 points), make up the Top 8. Rune last won consecutive tour-level matches at Wimbledon.

Last year’s finalist Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe are 10th to 13th, respectively. All four will need deep runs during the Asian swing to increase their qualification hopes.
