#NextGenATP players De Minaur, Humbert, Hurkacz, Mmoh, Munar broke into the Top 100 this season
Every year, new faces break out on the ATP World Tour. This season has been no different.

ATP World Tour players will vote for the Newcomer of the Year in the 2018 ATP World Tour Awards Presented by Moët & Chandon, with eligible players being #NextGenATP competitors who have cracked the Top 100 of the ATP Rankings for the first time this season (as of 15 October). The nominees are as follows:

ALEX DE MINAUR
(Age 19, Career-high No. 31 on 15 October)
Alex de Minaur began the 2018 season at No. 208 in the ATP Rankings, with just two tour-level match wins to his name. But the 19-year-old Aussie has taken the ATP World Tour by storm, climbing to his career-best of No. 31.

Not only did De Minaur qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals, to be held in Milan from 6-10 November, but the teenager has become a consistent threat week-in and week-out. De Minaur reached his first two tour-level finals at the Sydney International and Citi Open in Washington, D.C., and he also claimed his maiden ATP Challenger Tour title in Nottingham.


UGO HUMBERT
(Age 20, Career-high No. 99 on 15 October)
Ugo Humbert’s second ATP Challenger Tour title came at the perfect time, as Humbert rode the momentum of his victory in Ortisei, Italy, into the Top 100 of the ATP Rankings on 15 October. It’s an impressive rise, considering the 20-year-old Frenchman owned just five main draw Challenger match wins before beginning the Gatineau Challenger in July.

After starting that event as the World No. 257, Humbert won 23 of 27 Challenger matches to soar to a career-best ranking. Humbert earned his first two tour-level match wins in the past two months, qualifying for the US Open, where he advanced to the second round, and defeating Bernard Tomic at the Moselle Open in Metz.

HUBERT HURKACZ
(Age 21, Career-high No. 88 on 15 October)
This time last season, Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz was outside the Top 400 of the ATP Rankings. But the #NextGenATP 21-year-old has combined strong efforts at tour-level as well as the ATP Challenger Tour to soar into the Top 100, reaching a career-high No. 88 on 15 October.

“I was imagining that I can be here,” Hurkacz said. “But obviously it was a very long way away.”

Hurkacz claimed his maiden Challenger trophy in Pozan, Poland, and also advanced to the final in Zhuhai, China, earlier in the season. The Pole has tallied six tour-level match wins in 2018 after beginning the year with just one.

MICHAEL MMOH
(Age 20, Career-high No. 96 on 1 October)
Michael Mmoh has found the best form of his career in the second half of 2018, propelling himself into the Top 100 with success at both tour-level and the Challenger circuit. The 20-year-old American advanced to his second ATP World Tour quarter-final (also Brisbane in January) at the Abierto de Tenis Mifel presentado por Cinemex in Los Cabos before going on a tear at the Challenger level, winning back-to-back titles in Columbus and Tiburon, both in the United States.

While Mmoh remained between No. 140 and No. 200 in the ATP Rankings from November 2016 and April 2018, his surge helped him crack the Top 100 for the first time on 1 October. All six of Mmoh’s tour-level match wins have come in 2018.

JAUME MUNAR
(Age 21, Career-high No. 79 on 8 October)
Jaume Munar joins Mmoh as players in this group to lift back-to-back ATP Challenger Tour trophies in 2018. And not only did the Spaniard triumph in Prostejov, Czech Republic, and Caltanissetta, Italy, but he carried that momentum even after he broke into the Top 100 on 18 June.

Munar made his maiden ATP World Tour semi-final at the Generali Open, where he lost to eventual champion Martin Klizan. The Spaniard then won two matches at the Winston-Salem Open, including a victory over fellow #NextGenATP competitor Andrey Rublev.

All four nominees have reached multiple finals this season

The Most Improved Player of the Year Award in the 2018 ATP World Tour Awards Presented by Moët & Chandon recognises the player who significantly rose in the ATP Rankings and demonstrated an increasingly improved level of performance throughout the year. The winner, as selected by fellow players, will be announced ahead of the Nitto ATP Finals in London.

Marco Cecchinato
After starting the year ranked No. 109 in the ATP Rankings, Marco Cecchinato burst onto the scene in April. The 26-year-old Italian became the first lucky loser of the season to capture a tour-level trophy at the Gazprom Hungarian Open in Budapest. Cecchinato defeated three seeded opponents en route to the title and soon elevated his game to new heights at Roland Garros.

The Palermo native, in one of the biggest upsets of the season, ousted 2016 champion Novak Djokovic in four sets to become the lowest-ranked Roland Garros semi-finalist since No. 100 Andrei Medvedev in 1999. With that result, Cecchinato also became the first Italian man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final since Corrado Barazzutti at Roland Garros in 1978.

It wasn't long before the Italian added to his trophy haul, with Cecchinato once again hitting top form on his best surface at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag in July. Despite falling a set down in his opening match against Jiri Vesely, the Italian reeled off eight consecutive sets to clinch his second tour-level trophy of the season. Cecchinato, who began the year with just four tour-level wins, currently owns a 23-22 record in 2018.

Alex de Minaur
Australian Alex de Minaur is the youngest man to be nominated for this year's award. The 19-year-old started his season with a 7-2 record, reaching the Brisbane International semi-finals before a stellar run to his maiden ATP World Tour final the following week at the Sydney International.

De Minaur, who began the year at No. 208 in the ATP Rankings, entered the third week of the season ranked No. 127 and soon impressed further with a stellar run of performances on the ATP Challenger Tour. The Sydney-born #NextGenATP talent reached three finals in a stretch of five Challenger events, culminating in his maiden trophy at the level in June at the Nature Valley Open (d. Evans).

A second tour-level championship match appearance at the Citi Open (l. to Zverev) and back-to-back Grand Slam third-round showings at Wimbledon (l. to Nadal) and the US Open (l. to Cilic) have since proven the Aussie's ability to consistently produce results. Now ranked at a career-high No. 31, De Minaur will look to end the season strong after qualifying for the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan.

Kyle Edmund
Like De Minaur, Kyle Edmund wasted no time climbing the ATP Rankings in 2018. The British 23-year-old defeated Kevin Anderson and Grigor Dimitrov en route to his maiden Grand Slam semi-final at the Australian Open and, just three months later, reached another career milestone in Marrakech.

Without dropping a set, Edmund navigated four matches to enter his first tour-level final in Morocco (l. to Andujar). But, not to be content with one milestone moment, Edmund continued to break new ground throughout the season.

The 23-year-old Brit made it to his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final in Madrid (l. to Shapovalov), overtook countryman Andy Murray to become the new British No. 1, reached a career-high No. 14 in the ATP Rankings and soon lifted his first tour-level trophy at the European Open. As top seed in Antwerp, Edmund defeated 2016 champion Richard Gasquet in the semi-finals and overcame Gael Monfils in a final-set tie-break to lift his first trophy.

Stefanos Tsitsipas
Starting 2018 with only four tour-level wins, from qualifying No. 91 Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to his second tour-level quarter-final in the opening week of the season at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open. But it was in April, on clay, that the #NextGenATP Greek made headlines. In Barcelona, Tsitsipas broke inside the Top 50 of the ATP Rankings for the first time after becoming the first Greek man to reach an ATP World Tour final since Nicholas Kalogeropoulos in 1973.

Semi-final showings in Estoril and Washington, D.C. helped elevate the 20-year-old inside the Top 30 before his sensational run to the Rogers Cup final. Defeating Dominic Thiem, Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Kevin Anderson in consecutive matches, Tsitsipas became the youngest player to beat four Top 10 opponents at a single tournament since the ATP World Tour was established in 1990.

But, after falling to his second championship match loss against Rafael Nadal, the Athens-born star's search for a first tour-level trophy continued. After securing his place at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, Tsitsipas' search soon came to an end at the Intrum Stockholm Open. In the tournament's 50th edition, Tsitsipas beat three Top 40 players before ending Ernests Gulbis' perfect 6-0 final record to triumph in the Swedish capital. The Greek star is the first player from his nation to win an ATP World Tour title.

Nominees made significant moves in the ATP Rankings following returns from surgery
The Comeback Player of the Year Award in the 2018 ATP World Tour Awards Presented by Moët & Chandon recognises those players who have overcome injury in re-establishing themselves as one of the top players on the ATP circuit. The winner, as selected by the players, will be announced ahead of the Nitto ATP Finals.
Novak Djokovic
Two years after he last sat atop the ATP Rankings, Novak Djokovic will return to World No. 1 on Monday following the Rolex Paris Masters, after rallying from a low of No. 22 in June.
"Reflecting on what I've been through in the last year, it's quite a phenomenal achievement, and of course I'm very, very happy and proud about it," he said. "Five months ago if you told me that – I always believe in myself – but it was highly improbable at that time considering my ranking and the way I played and felt on the court."
Djokovic: I’m Playing At My Best Level
Djokovic’s 2017 campaign concluded prematurely with a fourth-round retirement at Wimbledon as he struggled with an elbow injury. On his return to the courts at the Australian Open, the former World No. 1 lost in the fourth round and decided to undergo a ‘small medical intervention’. He was left searching for answers following consecutive opening-round losses in Indian Wells and Miami, and reunited with his former coach Marian Vajda at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
From a 6-6 start to the season, Djokovic turned his season around by reaching the Rome semi-finals, Roland Garros quarter-finals and the Queen’s Club final before triumphing at Wimbledon. From mid-August, he proved unbeatable. Djokovic became the first player to achieve the Career Golden Masters as he claimed the elusive Western & Southern Open title, and he added to his trophy collection by winning the US Open and Rolex Shanghai Masters.

Jason Kubler
When Jason Kubler was younger, his knee would swell up anytime he touched a hard court. With a hereditary knee condition, the former junior World No. 1 underwent numerous surgeries as a teenager and played exclusively on clay courts from March 2012 through May 2015 to protect his knees.
Kubler’s Titanic Top 100 Climb
After being set back by microfracture knee surgery in 2016 and a shoulder injury the following summer, the Australian made his ATP Challenger Tour hard-court debut last October at Traralgon and won the title as a qualifier. He replicated that result on home soil at the Playford Challenger to start 2018. With another hard-court title at the Winnipeg Challenger, a runner-up finish at the Vancouver Challenger, and his return to Grand Slam action at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, Kubler found himself breaking into the Top 100 ahead of the US Open. In New York, he recorded his first tour-level win for four years.
In the space of 12 months, Kubler soared more than 800 spots in the ATP Rankings, climbing from No. 921 last October to a career-high No. 91 this October. “It’s almost unreal. Twelve months ago, I didn’t even imagine anything like this,” he said.

John Millman
John Millman has been here before. In 2015, the Aussie was nominated for Comeback Player of the Year, after rising more than 1,000 spots in the ATP Rankings following a shoulder injury that had left him doubting whether he could play at the elite level again. Millman again faced adversity in 2017, when he underwent another significant surgery, this time on his groin. “This one was really tough because movement is a big part of my game. Even when I was on the sideline, I couldn't do so much,” he admitted.
Time In The Gym Proving Critical For Millman In Comeback
Dropping outside the Top 200 last August, Millman began his road back with success on the Challenger Tour in the latter half of 2017, culminating with the title in his final tournament of the year. With a runner-up finish at the Gazprom Hungarian Open in Budapest and a pair of Challenger titles in the first half of the 2018 season, he eclipsed his previous career-high ATP Ranking of No. 60 by mid-May.
But he didn’t stop there, as he continued his climb to World No. 35 by October. Millman’s biggest moment came at Flushing Meadows, when he upset Roger Federer under the lights to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open. “I have retired in my head maybe a few times throughout my career when things got pretty tough, with my body and stuff,” he said afterwards. “It's those moments, playing on Ashe that makes all that toil worthwhile, and if times get tough down the track, hopefully I can think back to that moment.”

Kei Nishikori
Only 10 months ago, Kei Nishikori couldn’t imagine he’d be competing for a place in the Nitto ATP Finals entering the final week of the regular season. After wrist surgery forced him to miss the final three months of the 2017 season, the former World No. 4 dropped outside of the Top 10 to a low of No. 39 this April.
From Challengers To London Contenders, Kei Has Reason To Sing
Now, Nishikori stands at World No. 11, with a pair of ATP World Tour 500 finals in Tokyo and Vienna in October giving him a chance to take his place among the elite eight at The O2. “It wasn't easy to imagine but now, the last couple of months especially, I've been playing really well and have a lot of confidence, “ he said. “I'm happy to be back at this level.”
Nishikori’s comeback campaign began with a first-round loss at the Newport Beach Challenger, but was quickly followed by a title at the Dallas Challenger and a semi-final run at the New York Open. At the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, he showed he was still a contender for the tour's most prestigious titles as he upset two Top 5 players – Marin Cilic and Alexander Zverev – before falling to Rafael Nadal in the final. He also reached the Round of 16 at Roland Garros, quarter-finals at Wimbledon, and prevailed against Marin Cilic in five sets to reach the US Open semi-finals (l. to Djokovic).

This week, the stars of tomorrow of the ATP World Tour have descended on Milan, as the Next Gen ATP Finals enters its second edition. It marks the culmination of a successful season for these rising talents and gives them an exclusive stage to showcase their talents.

It was apropos that the week also featured the awards presentation for 2017 Challenger Tournaments of the Year. With many Milan qualifiers making great strides on the ATP Challenger Tour this year, the circuit is a true springboard to the next level. Three of its elite tournaments were honoured on Wednesday.

The NeckarCup in Heilbronn, Germany and the Odlum Brown VanOpen in Vancouver, Canada, were recognised after standout editions. The Sparkassen Open in Braunschweig, Germany, was celebrated for a fourth consecutive year, since the awards as voted by players were introduced. The trio of world-class tournaments were acknowledged for their passion and commitment to growing the game at the Challenger level.

Milan

The €127,000 event in Braunschweig enjoyed a 25th anniversary this year. Notable past champions include Gaston Gaudio (2000), Tomas Berdych (2004) and World No. 5 Alexander Zverev (2014). In 2017, Spanish teenager Nicola Kuhn lifted the trophy in just his second Challenger appearance. The event began with a small Centre Court and one catering tent, and the main stadium has since been upgraded to hold a capacity crowd of 2,000 patrons, with a big stage for the concerts and over 50 concession tents for catering and exhibitions.

Drive less than five hours south and you'll arrive in Heilbronn, where players and fans have walked through the doors of the Tennisclub Heilbronn Trappensee for four years. The future of German tennis was on full display this year, with 17-year-old Rudolf Molleker becoming the youngest winner on the circuit in 2018.

"We do our job really passionately and the result is a high-quality event for the players and everyone visiting. After only four years, we've reached two of our objectives: make it possible to increase the prize money and be honoured as one of the best Challengers worldwide.

Indian Wells, Queen’s and Stockholm named Tournaments of the Year
Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas have been named among the recipients of the 2018 ATP World Tour Awards presented by Moët & Chandon, with winners revealed ahead of Friday evening’s award presentations at the Official Launch of the Nitto ATP Finals.

Djokovic, who will receive the 2018 year-end ATP World Tour No. 1 trophy this Sunday at The O2, has also been selected by fellow players as the Comeback Player of the Year following his historic return from elbow surgery and a No. 22 ATP Ranking in June to clinch year-end No. 1. Marian Vajda, who guided Djokovic in his return to the top with the pair reuniting in April, has been named by his peers as ATP Coach of the Year.

Nadal has been honoured by players as winner of the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for a second time, while fans have selected Federer as the ATPWorldTour.com Fans’ Favourite presented by Moët & Chandon for a 16th straight year. In doubles, a new pair – Americans Mike Bryan and Jack Sock – has been crowned Fans’ Favourites.

A pair of #NextGenATP players win in two player-voted categories, with 19-year-old Australian Alex de Minaur awarded Newcomer of the Year and 20-year-old Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas taking Most Improved Player of the Year honours. Other winners include Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic, the year-end ATP World Tour No. 1 Doubles Team, and Tommy Robredo, who receives the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award.

The ATP World Tour's best tournaments have also been revealed, with the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells (Masters 1000), the Fever-Tree Championships at The Queen’s Club (500) and the Intrum Stockholm Open (250) named the Tournaments of the Year in their respective categories.

And the BBC’s Sue Barker has been recognised as the recipient of the Ron Bookman Media Excellence Award for her long-standing contribution to the popularity of the game.

Novak Djokovic: The Serbian secured a historic return to year-end No. 1 in the ATP Rankings, becoming the first player to be ranked outside the Top 20 and climb to the top spot in the same season. Djokovic fell as low as No. 22 in June after undergoing right elbow surgery earlier in the year. Everything changed when he entered Wimbledon, subsequently posting a 31-2 record including Grand Slam titles at the grass-court major and the US Open, as well as ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crowns in Cincinnati and Shanghai. With his victory in Cincinnati, he notched the Career Golden Masters, becoming the first player to complete the set of all nine Masters 1000 titles. Having previously finished at year-end No. 1 in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015, Djokovic joins Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer for the second-most top finishes, behind only Pete Sampras (6).

ATP World Tour No. 1 Doubles Team

Oliver Marach & Mate Pavic: The Austrian-Croatian duo clinched the year-end top spot for the first time, becoming the first players from their respective countries to achieve the feat in any of the ATP Rankings (singles, doubles, team). Marach and Pavic completed a dominant campaign, beginning with a 17-match win streak and titles in Doha, Auckland and the Australian Open. Also champions in Geneva and Chengdu, they reached a total of nine finals, including runner-up finishes at Roland Garros and Monte-Carlo. Marach, 38, is the oldest member of a year-end No. 1 doubles team since 38-year-old Sherwood Stewart in 1984. The 25-year-old Pavic is the youngest member of a year-end No. 1 doubles team since Todd Woodbridge, 24, in 1995. It marks the fifth straight year in which a different team has finished as year-end No. 1.

Most Improved Player of the Year

Stefanos Tsitsipas: The 20-year-old became the top-ranked Greek in ATP Rankings history after rising to a career-high No. 15 this season, and he also became the first player from Greece to win a tour-level title. The champion at the Intrum Stockholm Open, Tsitsipas dropped just one set en route to the indoor-hard court crown. He rose from a season-opening ATP Ranking of No. 91 to become the youngest member of the Top 20. He also finished runner-up at the ATP World Tour 500 event in Barcelona and the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Toronto, falling to Rafael Nadal in both finals. In Toronto, Tsitsipas became the youngest player to beat four Top 10 opponents at a single tournament since the ATP World Tour was established in 1990.

Newcomer of the Year

Alex de Minaur: From outside the Top 200 to open the year, de Minaur soared to a career-high No. 31 in 2018. De Minaur began his campaign with a first tour-level semi-final in Brisbane and final in Sydney. He would carry the momentum to the Challenger circuit, where he captured his maiden title in Nottingham in June. The 19-year-old also reached his biggest final at the ATP World Tour 500 event in Washington and earned third-round finishes at Wimbledon and the US Open. In 2017, de Minaur won two tour-level matches. In 2018, he secured a total of 24 victories. Making his debut at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, he is one of just two teenagers in the year-end Top 100 of the ATP Rankings.

Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award

Rafael Nadal: Fellow players voted Nadal as the winner of the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for a second time, recognising the Spaniard for his fair play, professionalism and integrity on and off the court. Nadal also received this honour in 2010. This season, the 32-year-old Spaniard spent 36 weeks atop the ATP Rankings and won five titles, including record 11th titles at Roland Garros, Monte-Carlo and Barcelona. Off the court, Nadal supported flood relief efforts in Mallorca.

Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year

Tommy Robredo: To honour the memory of his close friend, the Spaniard launched his foundation and an international wheelchair tennis tournament, the Santi Silvas Open, in 2009. Robredo’s foundation organises activities which encourage sports training for disabled people, especially wheelchair tennis. It also creates awareness of the importance of sport as beneficial to mental and physical health, and at the same time as a stimulant to personal growth and wellbeing.

ATP Coach of the Year

Marian Vajda: Vajda and long-time pupil Novak Djokovic reunited this past April at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters after a one-year split in 2017. The 53-year-old Slovakian guided Djokovic to a return to No. 1 in the ATP Rankings and Grand Slam victories at Wimbledon and the US Open, as well as ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crowns in Cincinnati and Shanghai. Vajda is a former World No. 34 and won a pair of ATP World Tour titles in the late 1980s.

Roger Federer: The 37-year-old Swiss extended his reign in this category, winning the popular vote from fans for a 16th straight year to take his record tally of ATP World Tour Awards to 37. This season, Federer became the oldest World No. 1 in the 45-year history of the ATP Rankings and also claimed his 20th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. Ahead of the Nitto ATP Finals, he won his 99th tour-level title at his hometown tournament in Basel.

Mike Bryan & Jack Sock: The Americans claimed the fan-voted award in their first year as a duo. Mike Bryan previously won this Award with his brother Bob Bryan from 2005-17. With Bob sidelined with injury since Madrid, Mike Bryan and Sock teamed up during the grass-court swing and won the Wimbledon title in only their second tournament together. They followed with a second Grand Slam title at the US Open.

Ron Bookman Media Excellence Award

Sue Barker: As accomplished in a television studio as she once was on a tennis court, the former Roland Garros champion and World No. 3 anchors BBC's tennis coverage, including this coming week from the Nitto ATP Finals. Each summer at the All England Club, Barker performs what has become a Wimbledon tradition: an on-court interview with the new men’s and women’s singles champions. Barker started her television career with Channel 7 in Australia, before working for SKY and then becoming one of the most celebrated presenters at the BBC.

BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells): The BNP Paribas Open wins in the Masters 1000 category for a fifth straight year. Ahead of the 2018 tournament, the BNP Paribas Open unveiled a brand-new “Full Bloom” marketing campaign that highlighted the world-class venue and players set amidst the stunning natural beauty and backdrop of the desert landscape. In parallel, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden underwent a beautification project to further amplify the feeling of Tennis Paradise. Inside Stadium 1, video walls were replaced and upgraded to complement the action on court. Earlier this year, BNP Paribas extended its title sponsorship of the tournament through 2023.

ATP World Tour 500 Tournament of the Year

Fever-Tree Championships (Queen’s Club): The Fever-Tree Championships reclaims the distinction as Tournament of the Year after previously winning in the ATP World Tour 500 category in 2015-16 and the 250 category in 2013-14. The grass-court event has been staged for more than a century at The Queen’s Club in London, and has increased its centre court capacity by more than 30 per cent over the last two years. In 2018, the tournament welcomed Fever-Tree, the premium mixer drinks company, as its title-sponsor.

Intrum Stockholm Open (Stockholm): The Intrum Stockholm Open wins the Tournament of the Year award in the 250 category for the second time. It previously shared the honour with the Winston-Salem Open in 2016. The indoor hard-court tournament marked its 50th anniversary this year. With the help of new tournament promoter Game Set Events, it celebrated unique moments of the tournament, including interviews on court with Bjorn Borg, Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg.

A new pair – Americans Mike Bryan and Jack Sock – has been crowned the ATPWorldTour.com Fans’ Favourites presented by Moët & Chandon in the 2018 ATP World Tour Awards. Bryan previously won this award with his twin brother Bob Bryan from 2005-17.

“It feels great to win the Fans’ Favourite,” said Bryan. “It’s been a fun season with Jack. This guy is a human highlight reel so I think the fans love watching the replays of the tweeners and those huge forehands.

“Thanks to the ATP for this award. Thanks for all the fans that voted.”

Sock added: “I think the only reason I’ll have that award at home is because of this guy and what he and his brother have done for so many years. I think they’ve won it 60 years in a row, so I’m glad I could just fill in for one year and tag along.”

With Bob sidelined with injury since Madrid, Mike Bryan and Sock teamed up during the grass-court swing and won the Wimbledon title in only their second tournament together. They followed with a second Grand Slam title at the US Open.

Nominees re-established themselves on the ATP Tour following injury layoffs
The Comeback Player of the Year award in the 2019 ATP Awards goes to the player who has overcome injury in re-establishing himself as one of the top players on the ATP Tour. The former World No. 1 had missed the second half of the 2017 season and been limited to six tournaments in 2018 due to chronic hip problems. By the Australian Open, an emotional Andy Murray admitted he wasn’t sure whether he could continue on.

“I’ve been in a lot of pain for probably about 20 months now… I told [my team] I can’t keep doing this. That I needed to have an end point because I was just playing with no idea of when the pain was going to stop,” said Murray. He hoped to make it through to Wimbledon, but said following a memorable fight-back against Roberto Bautista Agut in Melbourne, “If today was my last match, look, it was a brilliant way to finish.”

Two weeks later, Murray underwent hip resurfacing surgery. Five months following the procedure, which he called “brilliant, completely life-changing for me”, he was back in tour-level action and teamed up with Feliciano Lopez to clinch the doubles title at The Queen’s Club. He made another step forward in his comeback as he made his singles return in August at the Western & Southern Open (l. to Gasquet), and continued to gain confidence by winning matches at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Mallorca and at each of his three stops during the Asian swing, including a quarter-final run at the China Open (l. to Thiem).

To cap off his 2019 ATP Tour campaign, he triumphed over Stan Wawrinka 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the European Open in Antwerp to win his first singles title since 2017 in Dubai. “It means a lot. The past few years have been extremely difficult… I think it was a great match,” Murray said on court after his victory. “I didn't expect to be in this position at all, so I'm very happy.”

Andrey Rublev
The future seemed bright for Andrey Rublev in early 2018. He began the season by reaching the Doha final (l. to Monfils) and reached a career-high ATP Ranking of No. 31 by February. Two months later though, he was at home, spending three hours a day at a clinic doing magnetotherapy for a lower back stress fracture, eating lunch and sitting on the sofa.

When he returned to action, he reached the semi-finals at the Citi Open and later at the Next Gen ATP Finals, but he still felt lost. “I felt like I wasn’t there,” he said. “I was feeling like I was in the past when I was playing well before the injury. To recover this mental part of being here in this moment took me a couple of months.”

By January 2019, Rublev had dropped outside of the Top 100. He began making his way back up the ATP Rankings during the March Masters, when he reached the third round as a qualifier in both Indian Wells and Miami, but his best tennis came in the second half of the year. He upset World No. 4 Dominic Thiem en route to the ATP 500 final at the Hamburg European Open (l. to Basilashvili), and then earned the biggest win of his young career a month later at the Western & Southern Open, knocking out seven-time champion Roger Federer in straight sets to reach the Masters 1000 quarter-final.

Back inside the Top 50, Rublev continued his climb with quarter-final runs in Winston-Salem and St. Petersburg and a fourth-round showing at the US Open, where he opened with another win over a Top 10 player, Stefanos Tsitsipas. On his 22nd birthday, the Russian celebrated with his hometown title at the VTB Kremlin Cup in Moscow. The next day, he rose to a career-high World No. 22. “I’m at a loss. I can’t find the right words for what it means to me to win here,” he said.

Former World No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had fallen to No. 262 by November 2018, his lowest ATP Ranking in 12 years. He had managed to play in only two tournaments early in the 2018 season after struggling with various injuries and ultimately underwent left knee surgery in April. Upon his return in September, he managed to win just one of his six matches, but on a more promising note, five of those clashes went to a deciding set.

In 2019, Tsonga proved he was still a contender in the opening week of the season. He reached the semi-finals at the Brisbane International (l. to Medvedev), including wins over Australians Thanasi Kokkinakis and Alex de Minaur. In February, he returned to the winners’ circle for the first time in 15 months as he defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert in an all-French final at the Open Sud de France. “It was an amazing moment for me to win here in Montpellier... I have made many efforts to come back [here], so for me it is a good reward and I hope I will be able to continue playing at this level,” he said.

Tsonga also benefitted from his return to the ATP Challenger Tour for the first time since 2007. “Playing in Challenger tournaments helped me find the reasons why I was playing tennis again,” said the Frenchman, whose quarter-final run in May at Bordeaux helped lift him back into the Top 100. “The conditions are always more difficult. There's always a battle.”

In September, the 34-year-old won 13 straight matches, including titles at the Cassis Challenger and at the Moselle Open in Metz, before his streak came to an end in the semi-finals of the Orleans Challenger. He continued to shine on home soil, reaching the quarter-finals at the Rolex Paris Masters (l. to Nadal), securing his return to the Top 30 and another 30+ win season.

Stan Wawrinka
After undergoing two surgeries in August 2017 to treat a knee cartilage injury, Stan Wawrinka managed to climb from No. 263 to No. 66 in the ATP Rankings last season. But the former World No. 3 knew there was more to come, saying repeatedly that he believed he would eventually find his best tennis.

His patience and optimism were rewarded in 2019. The 34-year-old Swiss reached two ATP Tour finals, two Grand Slam quarter-finals and finished the season back inside the Top 20, at No. 16 in the ATP Rankings.

Wawrinka ended a 20-month final drought in February at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam (l. to Monfils), where he reached his first championship match since Roland Garros in 2017. “This is a big relief for me,” said Wawrinka. “It’s my first final since the surgery, so to show I can still play at this level against the top players is very important for me.” In October, he again played for an ATP Tour title, only to come up short against fellow Comeback Player of the Year nominee Murray in Antwerp.

He compiled a 4-6 record against Top 10 players in 2018, including a victory over then-No. 1 Novak Djokovic en route to the US Open quarter-finals. At Roland Garros, he defeated No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the last eight. Wawrinka also celebrated a big milestone at the clay-court major, becoming just the ninth active player to record 500 match wins. “I’m not done yet,” he told ATPTour.com. “Let’s keep working hard and start the road to 600!”

The Most Improved Player of the Year in the 2019 ATP Awards goes to the player who reached a significantly higher ATP Ranking by year’s end and who demonstrated an increasingly improved level of performance through the season. This year's nominees are Felix Auger-Aliassime, Matteo Berrettini, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The winner, as selected by the players, will be announced later this month.

Felix Auger-Aliassime has been making headlines since he was 14, when he became the first player born in the 2000s to earn a position in the ATP Rankings. In 2017, at 17 years, 1 month and 5 days old, he became the fourth-youngest player to crack the Top 200 of the ATP Rankings. In 2019, the Canadian kept making strides – in fact, achieving a career-high ATP Ranking 13 times during the season. From No. 108 at the start of the year, the 18-year-old peaked at No. 17 in October and became the youngest player ranked in the Top 25 since Lleyton Hewitt in 1999.

Auger-Aliassime started his season by playing qualifying matches, but a breakthrough run in February at the Rio Open presented by Claro – where he became the youngest ATP 500 finalist in history (l. to Djere) – lifted him more than 40 spots into the Top 60. The following month, as a qualifier, he became the third-youngest ATP Masters 1000 semi-finalist at the Miami Open presented by Itau, a result that pushed up into the Top 50 at No. 33 in the ATP Rankings.

The Canadian reached another clay-court final in Lyon (l. to Paire) and again in his first grass-court tournament in Stuttgart (l. to Berrettini), making him the youngest three-time ATP Tour finalist since Rafael Nadal in 2004-05. By the US Open, Auger-Aliassime – who shares a birthday with Roger Federer – had earned his place in the Top 20. Though he qualified for the Next Gen ATP Finals, he had to cut his season short in mid-October due to injury, but he still finished the year at No. 21.

Even Matteo Berrettini didn’t aspire to finish his season at the Nitto ATP Finals. “Being here wasn't a goal at the beginning of the year. Also before the US Open, I didn't expect that. I wasn't thinking about that,” he said. “I knew that I was playing good in springtime, like [during the] clay season. It's just crazy that it happened.”

In 2018, Berrettini’s first full year on the ATP Tour, he compiled a 19-19 record, reached a high of No. 52 and won the Gstaad title. In 2019, the 23-year-old Italian finished with 43 match wins, a career-high No. 8 ATP Ranking and two more titles.

Berrettini started making his move in April, when he reached back-to-back clay-court finals in Budapest (d. Krajinovic) and Munich (l. to Garin) to break into the Top 50. He continued his climb, rising into the Top 20 with a strong grass-court campaign that included the Stuttgart title, the Halle semi-finals and Wimbledon Round of 16 (l. to Federer).

While the Italian was limited to one tournament in the lead to the US Open, he made the most of his appearance in Flushing Meadows, where he reached his first Grand Slam semi-final. With players battling for a place in the top eight in the ATP Race To London, Berrettini advanced to his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. A semi-final run at the Erste Bank Open lifted him into the Top 10, and Berrettini went on to clinch the final qualification spot at the Nitto ATP Finals during the Rolex Paris Masters. “I’m really proud of myself... It’s been an unbelievable season,” he said.

Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev enjoyed a solid campaign in 2018, winning his first three tour-level titles – including the ATP 500 in Tokyo (d. Nishikori) – and reaching No. 16 in the ATP Rankings by year’s end. “It's hard to explain because when I was No. 15, I was good already. Then I wanted to get into the Top 10, which is never easy. I just want to see how far I can go… I know that to be high up in the [ATP Rankings], you have to do a significant effort, but I'm trying to do my best,” he said.

Medvedev’s best helped him achieve an ATP Tour-leading 59 match wins, 46 hard-court wins and nine final appearances in 2019, in addition to a career-high No. 4 ATP Ranking. He opened the season with a runner-up finish at the Brisbane International, followed by the Sofia Open title, a semi-final run at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters (d. Tsitsipas, Djokovic) and a final appearance in Barcelona (l. to Thiem).

Medvedev broke into the Top 10 following Wimbledon, and proceeded to take things to another level. For a three-month stretch, from the end of July through mid-October, the 23-year-old Russian went on a 29-3 tear with six straight finals. After runner-up finishes at the Citi Open (d. Kyrgios) and the Coupe Rogers (l. to Nadal), Medvedev claimed back-to-back Masters 1000 titles at the Western & Southern Open and Rolex Shanghai Masters. In between those triumphs, he impressed at Flushing Meadows as he rallied from two sets down against Nadal in the US Open final before falling in four hours and 51 minutes. He also celebrated his home country title at the St. Petersburg Open.

“My goal is still the same: to be better every day with each training, each tournament [and] to win tournaments,” said Medvedev, who qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time. “It's been working well so far. It's a source of real pleasure.”

Only one player to date has won Most Improved Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons: Novak Djokovic in 2006-07. Stefanos Tsitsipas has a chance of becoming the second after going from Next Gen ATP Finals champion in 2018 to Nitto ATP Finals champion in 2019.

The 21-year-old Greek finished the season in the best possible way, and he also opened 2019 with a statement win. At the Australian Open, he knocked out World No. 3 Roger Federer – ATPTour.com’s top upset at a major this season – en route to becoming the youngest Grand Slam semi-finalist since Djokovic in 2007. Tsitsipas followed with a pair of ATP 250 titles in Marseille and Estoril and was runner-up at three other tournaments. He ousted No. 2 Rafael Nadal to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 final at the Mutua Madrid Open (l. to Djokovic), and was a finalist at the ATP 500s in Dubai (l. to Federer) and Beijing (l. to Thiem). He additionally recorded his first win over a No. 1 player when he defeated Djokovic in the Rolex Shanghai Masters quarter-finals.

Tsitsipas, who reached a career-high of No. 5 in early August, put together a debut to remember in November at the season finale, where he recorded straight-sets wins over Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Federer before prevailing against Dominic Thiem 6-7(6), 6-2, 7-6(4) in the final.

“I feel like my game is getting better over time...I'm competing against one of the best players in the world, and the amount of effort and the amount of work I put every day deserves to have an outcome like this,” he said following his triumph.

Started playing tennis at age 4 with his dad.

> Competed at 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals.
> Runner-up in Houston, joining his father at 1995 Bastad as only two Norwegians to reach an ATP Tour final. Also advanced to semi-finals in Saol Paulo and Kitzbuhel.
> Reached Grand Slam third for first time at Roland Garros, where he beat No. 31 Matteo Berrettini in the second round for the biggest win of career. Qualified at ATP Masters 1000 events in Miami, Rome, Cincinnati and Paris.

> Made winning ATP Tour debut in April at the Hungarian Open as a lucky loser (d. Valkusz). Saved one match point against Steve Johnson in his ATP Masters 1000 debut at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia as a wild card. Made Grand Slam debut at the US Open as a qualifier and fell to 2016 champion Stan Wawrinka.
> Captured ATP Challenger Tour titles in Bergamo, Lexington and Ortisei, becoming the second-youngest player to win three Challenger titles in a season behind Richard Gasquet in 2003.
