Murray Continues Push For Top Spot In Vienna
Spoiler:
Brit could take No. 1 ranking from Djokovic before Barclays ATP World Tour Finals
Andy Murray continues his quest to take the World No. 1 spot from Novak Djokovic at this week’s Erste Bank Open 500 in Vienna.
If Murray wins in Vienna and next week’s BNP Paribas Masters in Paris, Djokovic would have to reach the Paris final in order to maintain his No. 1 standing. Djokovic currently has 10,600 points in the Emirates ATP Race to London, while Murray has 9,685 points. Should Murray win in Vienna, the 500 points he would gain would cut Djokovic’s lead over him to 415 points. The BNP Paribas Masters has 1,000 points on offer for the winner, enough for Murray to make a move for World No. 1.
After Paris, the Emirates ATP Race to London and the Emirates ATP Rankings will mirror each other. Murray must win in either Vienna or Paris if he is to have any chance of holding the top spot in the Emirates ATP Rankings before the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. But even if he prevails in both events, it’s not a guarantee Murray would unseat Djokovic.
Below are the scenarios in which Murray would move into the No. 1 position on Nov. 7.
· If Murray loses in the first-round of Vienna, he must win in Paris and Djokovic must lose beore the third round.
· If Murray loses in the second-round or quarter-finals of Vienna, he must win in Paris and Djokovic must lose before the quarter-finals.
· If Murray loses in the semi-finals of Vienna, he must win Paris and Djokovic must lose before the semi-finals
· If Murray finishes runner-up in Vienna, he must win in Paris and Djokovic must lose before the final
· If Murray wins Vienna, he must win in Paris and Djokovic must lose before the final, or he must reach the Paris final and Djokovic must lose before the semi-finals.
The battle for World No. 1 could be decided at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Djokovic is a five-time winner and four-time defending champion at the season-ending event, while Murray has never reached the final and moved past the round-robin stage in just three of seven previous appearances.
Murray starts his Vienna campaign with an opening round clash against Martin Klizan.
Matek, niepotrzebne obawy. Ja to nie wiem, czy Nadal w ogóle wypadnie z "8". Bezpośrednie zaplecze jakoś nie ma ochoty i siły grać jesienią w tenisa.

Murray would overtake Djokovic for No. 1 if he wins Paris and the Serbian does not reach the final. OR Murray reaches the Paris final and Djokovic does not reach the Paris semi-finals.

Niebawem Murray przegra, bo kiedyś musi. Dogonić rywala jest relatywnie łatwo, ale go przegonić i utrzymać przewagę to zupełnie inna bajka. Pachnie powtórką 2014, kiedy Roger gonił, a Novak w Bercy jednym turniejem pozbawił Szwajcara złudzeń.

Novak Djokovic exits Paris Masters to hand Andy Murray world No 1 initiative
Spoiler:
Andy Murray will become world No 1 if he reaches the Paris Masters final after Novak Djokovic crashed out in the quarter-finals.
Djokovic, who had been hunting a fifth title in Paris, lost 4-6 6-7 to Marin Cilic to open the door for current No 2 Murray to become the world's top-ranked player for the first time.
The Serb, who has topped the rankings for 122 consecutive weeks, had never previously lost to Cilic but meekly surrendered that perfect record in straight sets.

Cilic, in buoyant mood after clinching his spot in the World Tour Finals on Thursday, seized his second set-point chance in the opener to take the initiative and put the pressure firmly on Djokovic.

Cilic missed two break-point chances for a 2-0 lead in the second set and looked like he could regret his missed golden opportunity when his opponent broke to serve to get back to parity at 5-5.
Marin Cilic beat Novak Djokovic for the first time ever after playing him 14 times previously, winning 6-4 7-6 in the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters.

But the Serbian produced two double faults as he allowed Cilic to break back and moved to the brink of defeat again when Cilic fashioned two match points at 6-5.
Djokovic saved both of them as he forced a tie-break, but the Croatian wouldn't be denied and pushed on to battle into the semi-finals after swiping away a mid-court forehand to secure a famous win in one hour 45 minutes.

It means Murray, who faces Tomas Berdych in his quarter-final on Friday at 6.30pm, live on Sky Sports 3, needs only to win his next two matches in the French capital to end Djokovic's reign at the summit that stretches back to July 2014.

If Murray overcomes Berdych he would have to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Milos Raonic to be the second-oldest player to debut at No 1, after the 30-year-old John Newcombe in 1974.
Frenchman Tsonga faces Canada's Raonic in the last of the quarter-finals.

Murray One Match Away From No. 1
Spoiler:
Murray will face Raonic in the SFs
Andy Murray continued his dominance against Tomas Berdych on Friday at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris and is now one match away from reaching World No. 1. The Scot toughed out a 7-6(9), 7-5 win over Berdych, who can no longer qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
If Murray wins his semi-final match on Saturday against Milos Raonic, he'll become No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings for the first time in his career.
The Briton has spent 76 weeks at the No. 2 spot, and the 29-year-old Murray is looking to become the second-oldest player (John Newcombe, 30, in 1974) to debut at No. 1. It has been a long wait for the Scot. Should he reach No. 1, he'll own the ATP World Tour record for most time between becoming No. 2 and No. 1, having debuted at No. 2 on 17 August, 2009.
“Getting to No. 1, like I said, is 12 months of work. Consistency. I have never done that before. In my career, I have had periods where I have been consistent for a few months at a time and then drop-offs. Whereas, this year, barring the month in March, I can't have done much better than I had done,” Murray said. “I have put myself in a position to do something that takes a lot of consistency, a lot of concentration for a long period of time. I'm happy about that.”

The Brit was nearly untouchable on his serve against Berdych. He didn't face a break point until he served for the match at 5-4 in the second set. Murray was broken but broke right back and held to advance. For the match, the Scot won almost 75 per cent of his service points.
Berdych's level was so high initially, though, that the Czech nearly led by a set. With a free-swinging forehand, the seventh seed led the first-set tie-break 6-1 but couldn't capitalise on any of his seven set points. Murray improved to 10-6 against Berdych in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series and has won their past six match-ups.
With the loss, Berdych is also eliminated from London contention. He needed to at least reach the Paris semi-finals to have a chance to qualify for the year-end championships, to be held 13-20 November at The O2 in London.
Raonic beat local favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 7-6(4). The Canadian saved both break points faced to knock out the Frenchman, who had an outside shot to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Tsonga’s elimination paved the way for Dominic Thiem to qualify for London for the first time.
Raonic got off to the quick start, breaking Tsonga in the opening game and again in the fifth game to run away with the first set. Tsonga made a comeback bid in the second set, but Raonic held firm and secured the win on his first match point.
Murray leads 8-3 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry with Raonic and has won their past seven meetings. “If it doesn't happen tomorrow, it can still happen in a few months, which is when I thought I'd have a better chance of doing it,” Murray said of reaching No. 1. “But obviously I'd love to do it tomorrow if I can.”
