Tsitsipas: 'This Is Not Where I've Maxed Out'

Stefanos Tsitsipas admitted he was disappointed with his performance against Holger Rune at Roland Garros on Monday, but the World No. 4 believes he will learn important lessons from his fourth-round defeat at the clay-court major.

“[It was] a great match from his side, but I have to say it was a very bad management from far back from the court from my side,” said Tsitsipas in his post-match press conference. “I don't know, it was as if I was missing too many returns, giving away too many free points without really giving a chance to myself to compete a little bit."

#NextGenATP Dane Rune upset the fourth seed with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win on Court Philippe Chatrier. Tsitsipas was full of praise for his opponent’s performance, but has already identified the match as a turning point in his bid for further success on the ATP Tour.

“I was a completely different player once I stepped into the court, taking returns early,” said Tsitsipas. “I really feel it's one of those matches where every match would be a lot different after this point.”

Tsitsipas enjoyed a successful clay-court season overall, successfully defending his title at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters and reaching the final at another ATP Masters 1000 event, the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome. Given his strong form, the Greek admitted he felt he was capable of going deeper in Paris.

“I knew I [was] going to have to play difficult opponents that know how to play on this surface, but mentally, physically, tennis-wise, I felt good,” he said. “This is not where I've maxed out, let's say. I didn't give myself the opportunity to max out. It's not that he didn't give it to me, I didn't give myself the opportunity to go all the way and that is a shame.”

The Greek was impressed by 19-year-old Rune, who was making his maiden appearance in a Grand Slam fourth round on his Roland Garros debut. Tsitsipas admitted that there was an element of surprise to the Dane’s approach on court.

“He's young, he plays with a lot of emotion," said Tsitsipas. "[A] one-of-a-kind of an opponent, I would say. It's kind of strange, I don't get to face that very often from someone. But then suddenly [he] seems to be playing amazing, which is a good thing, of course.

“He is a very emotional player, he can play great, he absolutely deserves this victory. [He] played better, faced crucial tough moments better. But I can see something different next time with this opponent. I'm pretty convinced I can do way better.”



Tsitsipas recognises the emergence of young talent such as Rune and Carlos Alcaraz may make his push for success on the ATP Tour more difficult, but the eight-time tour-level titlist sees it only as extra motivation.

“[It] has to come at some point, it comes for everyone, right? I'm not worried. I know my tennis, I know my game,” said the Greek.

“These kids are going to want to beat me badly because obviously they are chasing. I'm chasing too, but I'm at a different kind of position than they are. I'm hungry to beat them too. Now that they have beaten me, I want payback.”

Tsitsipas Accepts Stuttgart Wild Card

Greek will make his debut at the grass-court event
Stefanos Tsitsipas will make his debut at the BOSS OPEN after accepting a wild card into the ATP 250 grass-court event, which will take place in Stuttgart from 6-12 June.

It will be the first time that the Greek has competed on grass this season. Last year, the 23-year-old played just one match on the surface, losing to Frances Tiafoe in the first round at Wimbledon.


Tsitsipas arrives in Stuttgart off the back of a fourth-round exit to #NextGenATP Dane Holger Rune at Roland Garros. He is currently 34-11 on the season, having captured his second ATP Masters 1000 crown in Monte Carlo in April.

In a strong field, Matteo Berrettini, Hubert Hurkacz and Denis Shapovalov will also be competing. Marin Cilic clinched the trophy at the ATP 250 event last season, defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final.

Tsitsipas will face American Maxime Cressy or a qualifier in his opening match and could face former World No. 1 Andy Murray in the third round. The Scot starts against a qualifier and could meet either seventh seed Alexander Bublik or American Denis Kudla in the second round.

In the bottom half, second seed Berrettini will play Portugal’s Joao Sousa or a qualifier in his first match back from injury. The Italian has not competed since March due to a right-hand injury.

Tsitsipas Rules Again In Monte Carlo

The first Masters 1000 action of the year on clay saw Tsitsipas break his trophy duck for 2022 with a successful defence of his title at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.

The Greek dropped just one set all week in the Principality. That came against Diego Schwartzman in a Monte Carlo classic to cap a thrilling day of quarter-final action in that saw all four matches go to deciding sets. Tsitsipas squandered a 5-2 lead in the second set, before rallying from 0-4 in the decider to oust the Argentine.

Tsitsipas’ final opponent was Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the unseeded Spaniard who stunned top seed Djokovic to kick-start a dream run to a maiden Masters 1000 final. Tsitsipas ultimately proved too strong, however, completing a 6-3, 7-6(3) win to become the sixth player to clinch back-to-back Monte Carlo titles.

“I am very proud of myself,” Tsitsipas said after his triumph. “Things weren’t going well at one point, but I managed to stay composed to finish the match off. I am really proud with the belief I put in my game. Sometimes you doubt yourself, but it is always important to keep your head high."

Mixed Success For Tsitsipas Brothers In Stuttgart

Petros and Stefanos clinch first-round win but later fall in quarter-finals
From a nerve-wracking victory to quarter-final disappointment, Petros Tsitsipas and Stefanos Tsitsipas went through a rollercoaster of emotions at the BOSS OPEN in Stuttgart on Wednesday.

The Greek brothers led their first-round match against Andre Goransson and Ben McLachlan 7-6(3), 5-5 when rain curtailed play at the ATP 250 event on Tuesday evening. Despite losing the second-set tie-break upon resumption on Wednesday, the wild cards held their nerve to clinch a 7-6(3), 6-7(4), 10-8 victory and advance in Germany.

Later in the day they returned to take on third seeds Hubert Hurkacz and Mate Pavic in the quarter-finals. Once again a Match Tie-break was required to separate the teams, but this time it did not go the way of Petros and his older brother Stefanos as Hurkacz and Pavic ran out 4-6, 7-6(3), 10-5 winners.

Hurkacz and Pavic are partnering for the first time in Stuttgart but both have enjoyed ATP Masters 1000 success this season. Hurkacz lifted the Miami Open presented by Itau trophy with John Isner, while Pavic clinched his fifth title at that level at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome alongside regular partner Nikola Mektic.

In the other quarter-final completed Wednesday, Fabrice Martin and Andreas Mies clinched a pair of tie-breaks to overcome the show-stopping pair of Alexander Bublik and Nick Kyrgios. The fourth seeds ran out 7-6(5), 7-6(4) winners to book their semi-final spot.

A pair of first-round matches rounded out the doubles action as rain again interrupted proceedings in south-west Germany. Aleksandr Nedovyesov and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi upset second seeds John Peers and Filip Polasek 7-6(2), 6-4, while all-French duo Benjamin Bonzi and Arthur Rinderknech clinched a 7-6(6), 6-7(8), 10-8 win against Ariel Behar and Gonzalo Escobar.

Tsitsipas Sets Murray Meeting In Stuttgart

Stefanos Tsitsipas earned his first win on grass since 2019, dispatching Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals at the BOSS OPEN in Stuttgart on Thursday.

The top seed, who lost to Frances Tiafoe in his only match last year on the surface at Wimbledon, quickly found his range at the ATP 250 event, firing his forehand through the court in a rain-disrupted match to triumph against the #NextGenATP star after 72 minutes.

“I could work a little bit on the percentage of the first serve, which could be higher. Otherwise I was very involved with my footwork,” Tsitsipas said. “Being very active on the first ball on the serve, pushing my opponent back. It was a good match.”

Tsitsipas has now recorded a Tour-leading 35 victories this season, highlighted by his run to the title at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters in April. His last win on grass prior to his victory over Stricker came against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy at the Cinch Championships in June 2019.

The Greek wild card is making his debut in Stuttgart and will next play former World No. 1 Andy Murray. It will be the second ATP Head2Head meeting between the pair, with Tsitsipas running out a winner in five sets at the US Open in 2021.

Tsitsipas reached finals in Rotterdam and Rome earlier this season, but arrived at the grass-court tournament in Germany off the back of a disappointing fourth-round exit at Roland Garros.

Stricker, who defeated Maxime Cressy in the first round, was facing a Top 10 opponent for the first time in his career. The 19-year-old won an ATP Challenger Tour title in Cleveland in February.
