Schwartzman Reflects On Standing Ovation At Roland Garros

Argentine falls to Djokovic in five sets on Friday
Diego Schwartzman may have lost his third round match to Novak Djokovic on Friday at Roland Garros, but he won plenty of new fans with his inspired play and fighting spirit.
Shortly after Djokovic prevailed in their five-set tussle, both the Serbian and Court Philippe-Chatrier crowd rose to their feet to give Schwartzman a standing ovation for his effort. It was a first-time experience for Schwartzman, who said he’ll take it with him for the rest of his life.

“It took me a while to notice because I was packing my stuff. I could see that everyone was clapping, and that Djoko was clapping and looking my way. Then finally I understood and I thought, ‘Okay, get your kit in the bag and try to enjoy the moment.’ It's a truly extraordinary thing,” said Schwartzman. “I think people who haven’t experienced it directly cannot even imagine how wonderful it is. It's going to be a great memory.
“I just want to say thank you to all of them,” he added. “It was really nice to receive that noise from the people. It's amazing for me.”

Djokovic was also full of praise for Schwartzman after the match and acknowledged that the Argentine had him on the ropes for much of the contest.
“He definitely deserved the applause he got at the end of the match, because he was fighting, He was playing really well,” said Djokovic. “He was probably the better player for the first three sets.”
Schwartzman has been in fine form on clay this season. He reached the semi-finals last month in Istanbul and recorded back-to-back quarter-final finishes this February in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Schwartzman also defeated Alexander Zverev en route to his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final this April in Monte-Carlo. He currently sits at No. 41 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, just seven spots off his career-best ranking achieved in April.
Despite the loss, Schwartzman can take solace in reaching the third round at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. But if he continues to play at this level, it’s safe to say it won’t be his last.

Argentine saves match points in three games for first Top 10 win

Dogged Argentine Diego Schwartzman simply does not know how to surrender. The 24 year old saved four match points to pull off a remarkable 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-5 upset of No. 3 seed Dominic Thiem on Tuesday night.

“It was a really intense match as we know each other really well, having played three times before – twice on clay courts,” said Schwartzman. “I knew I needed to play really well to beat him and today I played at 100 per cent. I saved this match, I don’t know how I did it. I was a little lucky, but then focused solely on the point – not thinking it was a match point.”

After an impressive start in which he found himself up a set and a break, the No. 36 in the Emirates ATP Rankings looked to have botched his lead when Thiem levelled the match on his fifth set point of the second-set tie-break.

The 23-year-old Austrian looked to have turned the tables when he surged to 5-2 in the deciding set. But Schwartzman was not done yet. He saved two match points on serve at 3-5, another when Thiem served for the match and a fourth when he was serving to stay alive for 5-5.

With the momentum swing now well in his favour, Schwartzman broke to serve for the match. But the nerves soon took hold. A wayward double fault did not help his cause as he slipped behind 0-40. But this was not to be Thiem’s day.

Schwartzman reeled off the last five points of the match to inflict Thiem’s fourth straight Coupe Rogers loss at the first hurdle.

The Austrian’s 67 unforced errors and eight doubles faults made for a tough night. It was Schwartzman’s first defeat of a Top 10 opponent in the Emirates ATP Rankings in 14 attempts.

Schwartzman Recovers From Slow Start In Montreal

Diego Schwartzman completed a remarkable turnaround on Wednesday at the Coupe Rogers to reach his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final of the season.
Schwartzman lost the first eight games of the pair’s second meeting to beat his former training partner in South America, #NextGenATP American Jared Donaldson, 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 in two hours and eight minutes. Donaldson won their Aegon International first-round match 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5 in June.
The 24-year-old Schwartzman, now 24-19 on the season, will next face Dutchman Robin Haase, who saved eight of 10 break points against seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov to advance 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-1 in two hours and nine minutes.

Haase also hit 13 aces and won 77 per cent of his first-serve points to beat Dimitrov for the first time in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. Haase reaches his second Masters 1000 quarter-final. He fell to then-World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the 2012 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters quarter-finals.
Schwartzman, who reached the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters quarters (l. to Nadal) in April, has never made the final four at Masters 1000 event. He'll try turn around an 0-4 record against Haase in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

The story of the bottom half of the US Open draw took another twist on Friday as Diego Schwartzman ousted fifth seed and 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic in the third round. The Argentine battled from a set down as he edged Wimbledon runner-up Cilic 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4.
World No. 33 Schwartzman is through to the fourth round of a Grand Slam championship for the first time and will take on 16th seed Lucas Pouille.

The highest seed now remaining in the bottom half of the draw is No. 10 John Isner, who faces Mischa Zverev in the Arthur Ashe Stadium night session. Cilic’s departure means a new Grand Slam finalist will be guaranteed at Flushing Meadows.
"Sometimes if you have luck in the draw and you can take the chances, it's always good for the new guys or for the guys who are outside the Top 10," said Schwartzman. "I think many players are doing well this week, and they are taking the opportunities because many players are injured this week. I think we are trying to take the chances and try to go forward in the tournament.

"I am a little bit surprised [to be in the fourth round], but the past weeks I was playing really well. I did third round in Paris and quarters in Montreal. I think my confidence is going up. I think in every match I can win. I am playing well and try to be like this every match."

Schwartzman benefitted from 80 unforced errors from the racquet of Cilic, who had been sidelined with an adductor injury since finishing runner-up to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final in July. In contrast, the 25-year-old Schwartzman reached a string of quarter-finals after Wimbledon, most notably at the Coupe Rogers in Montreal, where he upset No. 7-ranked Dominic Thiem to reach the last eight at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament for the second time this year.

Pouille was a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 winner over Mikhail Kukushkin, edging the Kazakhstani in two hours and 20 minutes to set a first-time meeting with Schwartzman for a spot in the quarter-finals.
The 23-year-old Frenchman had endured a difficult run of form in the weeks leading into the US Open, winning just two of six matches since capturing the Mercedes Cup title on grass in Stuttgart in June. But the right-hander has turned it around again at Flushing Meadows and is looking to reach the last eight for the second year in a row, having beaten Rafael Nadal in the fourth round last year before falling to Gael Monfils.

Q. A lot of ups and downs at the end of that match. How were you able to close it out?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: I think all the match was like this, was up and down. Every time in the third set, as well. I was a break up two times, I think, and then I can close the third set 7-5.
Then in the final of the match I think I start to be a little bit nervous. When I served 5-2, I think he played much better than me. I didn't do many mistakes. But then in the 5-4, it was just one break, and there it start the nerves in my body and was really tough the last game, but I can win and I am really happy.
Q. He's got a really good serve. How were you able to break him so many times?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: I don't know. I am trying every time to return well. I keep improved the thing. I always, in the practice, I stay five, ten more minutes doing returnings. And nothing. This time I can do it very well, and next match I need to do it again, because I know with my serve is not easy. I need to do it every match good.
Q. How would you describe the opportunity that there is for you and some of the other young players who are not the famous guys that we have seen for so many years?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: I think it's a little bit new era with many players, new players. Many young players are playing amazing tennis. Shapovalov, Zverev, Thiem, Coric are playing really, really well. Nothing. I am a little bit old than that guys (smiling). But I try to improve every year.
Sometimes you can play better than two years before when you are 25, 26, and I think the years, for me, are really good. I am improving year by year.
Q. What does it mean to you if you are indeed an inspiration for people who are not tall?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: I hope maybe they can understand tennis is for everyone. Is not just for the tall guys.
Sometimes it's helping a lot if you are big, because you can serve fast, you can do everything fast on the baseline because you have more, the arms are bigger than me.
But nothing. I was always like this, and I always try to improve my tennis and try to don't think about.
Q. Next match, Pouille or Kukushkin? And just generally the opportunity you have at this tournament. There is no Top 10 guys left in the bottom half of the draw.
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: Yeah, I never look before my match who is the next opponent. Just try to be focused on the match. Yes, Pouille, big player, top 15, he's doing very good years. If he win, it's going to be a really good match. He's playing fast, aggressive.
Kukushkin, I think, is more just moving the ball. We have Davis Cup in a few weeks in Kazakhstan, and he's from Kazakhstan. If he win, it's going to be, like, some important match.
Q. As you were walking to the net, I think you were having some words either with yourself or with Cilic afterwards. What was it you were saying as you were getting ready to embrace?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: In the final of the match?
Q. At the end.
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: Yeah, I come back from one or two break points, and one of that break points, I try to do like this (raising arms in the air) just because I need some air and nothing else. Was nothing about Marin.
And after the match, when he coming to the net, I just say sorry to him, because sometimes the opponent can't understand well the situation. Nothing. I just did good words for him, because he's a big player. He's a really good guy inside the court. Nothing else.
Q. Before the tournament began, there were players, big players you knew who were not going to be here: Djokovic, Wawrinka, Murray. There have been health problems that are widespread. What does that give you in the sense of the opportunity that there is to make a run?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: Yeah, sometimes if you have lucky in the draw and you can take the chances, it's always good for the new guys or for the guys who are out from the Top 10.
I think many players are doing well this week, and they are taking the opportunities because they are injured. Many players are injured this week. I think we are trying to take the chances and try to go forward in the tournament.
Q. To what degree did you surprise yourself today and to be this far here at the US Open?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: Yeah. About because I am in the fourth round? Yeah, I am a little bit surprised, but the last weeks I was playing really well. I did third round in Paris and quarters in Montreal.
I think my confidence, it's going up. I think in every match I can win. I am playing well and try to be like this every match.

Q. Looked like you were in pretty big trouble at the end of the third set. What were you feeling at that point and how were you able to still win the match?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: Yeah, in the third set when I was 2-3, he broke my serve in the 2-All, then he served 3-2. Start to feel some pain in my right leg. Then was tough because I was just thinking about that. Never happen to me something in the leg. Just a few times in my career. Was tough to be focus again of the match.
I think he have the chance in the fourth when he was a break up again. Then he start maybe to be a little bit nervous, more than me. I was just thinking in my leg. I think that helping a lot to me to be more aggressive on the match and try to win every point.
I think in the final, the fourth set, I play really good tennis.
Q. You seem to love playing on Grandstand. To what extent did the crowd help you out there today?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: Yeah, always. I mean, all the matches, they are helping a lot in the matches. In the first round, second round as well, they are helping a lot to me. When it's a tough moments on the matches, they are making noise with me, just to be with me on the match. That is helping a lot always. I am really happy for that and thanks everyone for doing that.
Q. After your last match you said that you get a lot of joy in the message to people who aren't so tall about your success, that tennis is for everyone. What messages have you gotten back from people with your run here that maybe have made a special impression on you?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: Yeah, I think they are enjoying more than other players maybe because of that, of that thing. They are enjoying when I just do a game with that in the matches, maybe with the hands or everything.
I am enjoying with the people here. When I win the matches, they are really happy with me. Me, too, with them. I think we are enjoying together to be here in the quarterfinals.
Q. What about the message as far as height and the role of height or not role of height in success in tennis?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: I don't understand that.
Q. What message is your success sending about height in tennis.
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: Similar to the other day. I mean, is not just for the big guys here. The big guys have a little bit of advantage to play tennis because they can serve better, they can do a lot of things better. If you are small, you just need to be focus in many things.
Is not easy, but I am here. I am smaller than that guys, and nothing. I am enjoying. Maybe a lot of players like me can do in the next year.
Q. Back to your injury. Were you surprised you were able to win that fourth set?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: Yeah, I am really surprise because I was just thinking in the leg in the fourth set. Maybe Lucas, as well. That's why he can't deal well in the fourth.
Q. Thoughts on Carreno Busta next on Ashe?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: No, I want to play (indicating an outside court)...
No, it's going to be really nice for me. I am really happy to be in the quarterfinals this year. More if I play against Pablo because he's my friend outside the court. We have a good relationship in the locker rooms, and we have a lot of things outside the tennis life.
It's going to be really nice for both of us to play in the quarterfinals here in a Grand Slam. Is nice.
Q. What about styles of play? How would you describe his style versus your style?
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN: I think we are similars. We are similars. We try to be solid in the baseline, play every point, be focus on every point, try to run a lot on the court.
I think it's going to be a tough match for both. We need to be in our 100% to can play our best tennis.

Argentine to meet Carreno Busta in last eight
The size of the fighter is irrelevant. It's the fighter's fight that makes all the difference.
That has been the mantra of Diego Schwartzman throughout his career and he has put that on display for the world to see at the US Open. Schwartzman fought off a leg injury and a stern test from Lucas Pouille to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final in New York on Sunday. The Argentine outlasted Pouille 7-6(3), 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 in two hours and 35 minutes, firing 44 winners including nine aces.
The 25 year old was efficient on return as well, converting an impressive seven of nine break chances. At 5'7", Schwartzman is the shortest Grand Slam quarter-finalist since fellow 5'7" South American Jaime Yzaga at the 1994 US Open.
Having won just one match in three previous trips to New York, the 29th seed was keen to seize the opportunity in the bottom half of the draw. Schwartzman played the role of giant slayer in rallying past fifth seed and former champion Marin Cilic in four sets and would do the same in ousting Pouille, who reached the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows last year.
"All the matches, they are helping me a lot," Schwartzman said of the support of the New York crowd. "In the first round and second round as well, they are helping me a lot. When it's a tough moment, they are making noise with me, just to be with me in the match. That is helping me a lot. I am really happy for that and thanks to everyone for doing that."

Schwartzman proved to be an unstoppable force on Grandstand on Sunday, flying around the court and launching his diminutive frame into forehands and backhands. A forehand winner would seal the opener in a tie-break and, after exchanging a pair of breaks midway through the second, he would take a two-set lead with another rifled forehand.
Momentum abruptly shifted in the third set, with Pouille breaking twice to force a fourth. An emotional Schwartzman received treatment on his upper right leg, but his agility was not hampered. And he remained focused on the finish line after falling behind an early break in the fourth, breaking right back to love and reeling off five straight games to emerge victorious after just over two and a half hours.

Schwartzman is in the best form of his career, having reached his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final three weeks ago in Montreal, registering his first Top 10 win over Dominic Thiem. Projected to rise to a career-high Top 30 position in the Emirates ATP Rankings, he will next face 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. A massive opportunity awaits, in what will be the first clash of their careers.
"It's going to be really nice for me," Schwartzman said about playing Carreno Busta. "I am really happy to be in the quarter-finals this year. Even more because Pablo is my friend outside the court. We have a good relationship in the locker room and we have a lot of things outside the tennis life. It's going to be really nice for both of us to play in the quarter-finals here in a Grand Slam. It is nice."
Fellow Argentine Juan Martin del Potro will look to join his countryman in the quarter-finals on Monday, when he battles Dominic Thiem. The last time multiple players from South America featured in the last eight in New York was in 2009: eventual champion Del Potro and Chile's Fernando Gonzalez.
