GRANOLLERS WINS ALL-SPANISH CONTEST TO CAPTURE SECOND TITLE

Obrazek
Marcel Granollers won his second
ATP World Tour title.

Eighth seed Marcel Granollers defeated fourth seed Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in an all-Spanish final on Sunday at the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad to win his second ATP World Tour title.

The 25-year-old Granollers capped a dream week, which also saw him defeat second seed Stanislas Wawrinka and third seed Mikhail Youzhny, to become the seventh different Spanish winner on the ATP World Tour this season. He earned 250 South African Airways 2011 ATP Ranking points and €72,600 in prize money.

"Last week was bad for me because I felt a lot of pain in my arm, which I had felt since Wimbledon," revealed Granollers. "I went home and rested for five days without any practice, and I came here on Sunday and started to feel better and better. Now I have won the tournament and so it’s amazing.

"It’s very important for me because I won my first tournament in 2008, which was a little unexpected, and three years later I won here. So there is a lot of work behind today and I feel amazing."

In the fifth all-Spanish final on the ATP World Tour this year, and the first in Gstaad since 1997, Granollers dominate the first set, surrendering only four points on serve and converting one of his five break point chances to take the early lead.

Verdasco struck back with a decisive break of serve at the start of the second set to level the match, but it was Granollers who seized the initiative in the decider, breaking serve in the sixth game before claiming victory in two hours and 24 minutes.

"It was a very tough match because he’s an incredible player," said Granollers. "He’s won a lot of tournaments and it was very tough for me today. All week I served very well, especially today. I was very solid from the baseline and today I played the first set very aggressively."

Granollers was contesting the third ATP World Tour final of his career. He captured his first crown on clay in Houston three years ago (d. Blake) and finished runner-up to countryman David Ferrer on indoor hard courts in Valencia last November.

Former World No. 7 Verdasco was looking to win his first ATP World Tour title since triumphing in Barcelona (d. Soderling) in April 2010. The left-hander dropped to a 5-11 mark in ATP World Tour finals; he also lost out in the San Jose (l. to Raonic) and Estoril (l. to del Potro) title matches earlier this year.

Reflecting on the match, Verdasco said, "It was close, and when a match is like that, one or two points decide it. He played better than me on the important points and he served very good. He really deserved this victory, after having the pain in his arm the past few weeks and he didn’t even know if he would be able to play here. He played unbelievable all week, beat many good players, and today it was really tough just to return his serve.

"Of course it’s better to lose in the final than before the final," added the Madrid native. "But you always want to win, so it’s not easy to lose the final. I think I played well the whole week; it’s tough to play here with altitude. I just need to try not to let the negative part of losing the final get me down, and try to take the positive part and get the confidence and motivation for the upcoming tournaments.”

Granollers continues another dream run in Valencia

Obrazek

2010 Valencia runner-up Marcel Granollers is back in the semifinals after upsetting Gael Monfils on Friday. Granollers awaits either Juan Martin Del Poto or Sam Querrey.

Marcel Granollers is making another dream run at the Valencia Open 500.

Granollers, who reached last year's final and is 14-3 lifetime (including qualifying) at this event, took out Gael Monfils 7-6(12), 3-6, 6-4 in quarterfinal action on Friday afternoon. The Spaniard treated his home fans to a hard-fought victory after two hours and 26 minutes of play.

This one was back-and-forth right from the start. Granollers raced to a 4-1 lead in the first set only to see Monfils storm back and serve for it at 5-4. The world No. 34 broke back and eventually forced what prove to be a thrilling tiebreaker. Both players held multiple set points (none on their own serves) until Granollers finally struck for a decisive mini-break at 13-12.

Monfils could have had one foot on the plane to Paris after the opening-set disappointment, but instead he fought back in the second. The third-seeded Frenchman broke early and never came close to giving it back. He won 17 of 19 first-serve points and did not face a single break point en route to serving out the set at 5-3.

Despite going down an immediate break in set three, Monfils continued to fight. The world No. 10 recovered from 3-0 down and broke when his opponent served for the match at 5-3. One last momentum swing, however, went the other way. Granollers stormed back from 0-30 at 4-5 and won four consecutive points to clinch the win.

Monfils finished with 10 aces but double-faulted eight times, while Granollers recorded four aces and one double. Next up for Granollers is either Juan Martin Del Potro or Sam Querrey.

VALENCIA OPEN 500 2011

Granollers Outlasts Monaco For Valencia Title

Obrazek

Marcel Granollers captured his second title of the year on Sunday at the Valencia Open 500, outlasting Juan Monaco 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(3) in a clash that spanned just over three hours.

The Spaniard defeated four Top 20 players, Alexandr Dolgopolov (No. 16), Marin Cilic (No. 20), Gael Monfils (No. 10) and Juan Martin del Potro (No. 14) to reach the final. He improved to a 2-1 mark against Monaco, topping the Argentine in Valencia for the second straight year, having won their quarter-final encounter in 2010 en route to a runner-up finish to countryman David Ferrer.

After splitting the first two sets, Monaco broke serve to start the third set and maintained his advantage until the eighth game of the set. The two held serve in the final four games to send the title match to a deciding tie-break. From there, Granollers pushed ahead with a mini-break lead at 2-1 and never looked back to claim his third career title.

The victory gives Granollers his first hard-court trophy, with his two previous triumphs coming on clay in Gstaad earlier this year (d. Verdasco) and Houston in 2008.

Monaco was aiming to end a title drought dating back to 2007, when he won all three of his career titles. The 27 year old was appearing in his first final since a runner-up showing to Thomaz Bellucci in Santiago last year.

Granollers defeats Monaco to win Valencia Open

VALENCIA, Spain (AP)—Marcel Granollers defeated Juan Monaco 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (3) in the Valencia Open final on Sunday for his third career win.

Granollers dominated the first set between the two unseeded players with his serve-and-volley game.

Monaco rallied to win the second set and then saved three championship points in the decider to force a tiebreaker.

Granollers claimed his second title of the year when the Argentine hit wide.

The 34th-ranked Granollers lost to fellow Spaniard David Ferrer last year.
