Southern California native Taylor Fritz wins U.S. Open boys' title

Taylor Fritz of Rancho Santa Fe won the U.S. Open boys' singles title Sunday, completing a top performance by U.S. junior boys' players in three of the world’s best tennis events.

Fritz, 17, beat a U.S. teammate in the final, Tommy Paul, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-2. Paul had rallied from 3-1 in the second set.

Paul won the French Open junior title, beating Fritz in the final, and another U.S. player, Reilly Opelka, took the title at Wimbledon.

Fritz, son of former tour standout Kathy May, will finish the season as the top-ranked junior in the world and has chosen to turn pro. He likely will play no more junior events.

In the girls' tournament at the U.S. Open, U.S. player Sofia Kenin lost in the singles final to Dalma Galfi of Hungary, 7-5, 6-4.

Fritz, 17, Completes Stunning Title Run In Sacramento

Sacramento Challenger (Sacramento, U.S.A.): The future of American tennis was on full display on Sunday, as the three-week northern California swing on the ATP Challenger Tour rolled into Sacramento. For the first time since 2007, a final on the circuit featured a pair of teenagers as 19-year-old Jared Donaldson battled 17-year-old Taylor Fritz. Donaldson was looking to claim his second title after emerging victorious in Maui to open the 2015 season, but in the end it was Fritz who came away with the pulsating win 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

It was a story of survival and mental fortitude for the young American, who saved a remarkable 34 of 37 break points faced throughout the week, including 15 of 16 in the final. Competing in just his second Challenger main draw, Fritz would become the youngest American titlist on the circuit since Donald Young in Aptos 2007. He joins rising talents Borna Coric and Alexander Zverev as players aged 17 & under to win a title in the last two years. At World No. 694, he is the lowest-ranked player to win a Challenger crown this year. He soared to No. 339 with the win.

“The main thing is to not let this get to my head and to not think that I’ve made it. I’ve got a lot of work to do and I know that. Hopefully if I keep working I can continue to be compared to those guys (Coric, Zverev, etc.). I don’t think I’m going to rush into too many tournaments this year. Obviously we’ll rethink my schedule but it will be more Challenger events and less Futures.”

"I served a lot better than last week," Fritz told broadcaster Mike Cation on Sunday. "In Sacramento I was off in some service games. This week I served really well and played great tennis all around. It's surprising because this week the scorelines would suggest that it was much easier for me. But the draw was much tougher. I played a seed every round besides the first round and that just shows how much better I played.”

"I didn't see a difference in the amount of times he's coming to net from last week," Fritz added, referring to his rematch against Brown having saved three match points in the Sacramento second round. "Every time he made a first serve or hit a second serve into the body, I assumed he was coming in and tried to put it in a corner or just low. When I put it low, sometimes he'd miss it and other times he'd hit it too good.”

"I'm going to play a lot more tournaments. The plan was to take two months to train, but I think I'm going to bring the offseason down to one month. I thought I needed to train to have these results, but I put two really hard weeks in before Sacramento and that's all it took to start playing like this. Once you get the results, you have to capitalise on it."
