Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic have the chance to put things right at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Saturday.

The Croatians agonisingly lost out to Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in two tie-breaks in the 2021 final, but the top pairing in the ATP Rankings has another shot at lifting the trophy in the U.A.E after coming through a stern semi-final test against John Peers and Filip Polasek on Friday.

Mektic and Pavic were forced to stay cool under pressure as they saved all five break points they faced in their 6-4, 7-5 victory, winning 80 per cent (32/40) of points behind their first serves in the match.

Standing between them and a first ATP Tour title of 2022 in Saturday’s final will be fourth seeds Tim Puetz and Michael Venus, after they came through a Match Tie-break against American-French duo Austin Krajicek and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7.

Rolex Paris Masters champions Puetz and Venus are seeking their first win over Mektic and Pavic, who won the only previous meeting between the teams in Vienna last year.

Not long after his semi-final loss to Cameron Norrie, Stefanos Tsitsipas teamed with Feliciano Lopez to reach the doubles final at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC. The unseeded duo knocked off Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara, 6-4, 6-4, to reach their first ATP Tour final as a pair.

Against fourth seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer in Saturday's final, Tsitsipas will be bidding for his first tour-level doubles crown. He previously reached the final of the 2019 Miami Open, teaming with Wesley Koolhof at the ATP Masters 1000 event.

Lopez, a former doubles World No. 9, is seeking a sixth ATP Tour doubles title in what will be his 12th final.

There was no doubles action at the Chile Dove Men+Care Open on Friday as both spots in the championship match were set by walkovers. In a dramatic day of quarter-final doubles action at the Serbia Open, all three matches went the distance and one seeded team was sent home.

Top seeds Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic survived a Match Tie-break to knock off home favourites Ivan Sabanov and Matej Sabanov, while third seeds Max Purcell and Matthew Ebden missed out on two match points in a loss against Tomislav Brkic and Nikola Cacic.

Mektic and Pavic came from behind against Serbia's Sabanov twins to advance to the semi-finals, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4. The established Croatian pairing is seeking its first ATP Tour title of 2022, after falling one point short in the Dubai final in February, when the duo held three championship points against Tim Puetz and Michael Venus.

They'll face Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski as they bid for their second final of the year, after the Monagesque-Polish pairing defeated Ben McLachlan and Andre Goransson, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.

Ebden and Purcell, champions in Houston earlier this month, saw their win streak snapped at five after a 3-6, 7-6(9), 10-4 result. The Aussies could not serve out the match at 6-5 in the second, then had two match points go begging at 6-4 in the tie-break.

Brkick and Cacic dominated the Match Tie-break, winning the first three points and racing to a 9-2 lead before closing it out on their third match point. Both men were born in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with Cacic playing under the Serbian flag.

Top seeds Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic moved within one win of securing a first title since the Tokyo Olympics in July with a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski at the Serbia Open in Belgrade.

The Croatian pairing, which ended 2021 as the No. 1 doubles team in the ATP Rankings after picking up nine tour-level titles last year, has struggled for its best form this season. Two breaks of serve in the semi-final of the ATP 250 event on Friday were enough for them to reach their second championship match of the year, however, as they continued a strong showing on debut in Belgrade.

Mektic and Pavic will face Ariel Behar and Gonzalo Escobar in Saturday’s championship match after the Uruguayan-Ecuadorian team ousted Tomislav Brkic and Nikola Cacic 6-2, 7-6(3). Behar and Escobar, who also reached the final in Belgrade in last year, are chasing a third ATP Tour title together having lifted the trophies in Delray Beach and Marbella in 2021.

At the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies overcame defending champions Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in a rematch of the 2021 final to seal a last-four spot at the ATP 500 event.

Krawietz and Mies are two-time Grand Slam champions on the clay at Roland Garros and the German pairing had to use all their experience on the red dirt to hold off the fourth-seeded Colombians in a 6-4, 7-5 win. Krawietz and Mies saved all 10 break points they faced in a 90-minute victory to level the ATP Head2Head series between the two teams at 1-1 — Cabal and Farah triumphed in the only previous meeting between the teams at the 2019 Nitto ATP Finals.

Also in Barcelona, Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer continued their strong 2022 with a 6-3, 7-6(4) win over a pair of Top 50 singles stars in Pedro Martinez and Lorenzo Sonego.

Arevalo and Rojer are hunting their third title of the year after back-to-back triumphs on the hard courts in Dallas and Delray Beach in February. The El Salvadorian-Dutch duo proved its clay-court pedigree with a run to the semi-finals at last week’s Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, and the pair held their nerve on Friday to rally from 0/4 in the second set tie-break by winning seven straight points.

Defending champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic got back to winning ways Tuesday at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia with a dominant victory to open their Rome campaign. The third seeds cruised past Lukasz Kubot and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 6-3, 6-3, to earn their first victory since reaching the Belgrade final last month.

After early exits in Munich and Madrid, the Croatians started strongly in the Italian capital. They broke serve three times in the match and erased all four break points against them, winning 74 per cent (26/35) of their first-serve points with the help of seven aces. Grigor Dimitrov and Hubert Hurkacz await in the last 16.

Mektic and Pavic reached the Dubai final in February but are still seeking their first title of 2022. The Croatians won nine titles last season, their first as a team, including three at ATP Masters 1000 events (Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome). They also claimed the Wimbledon title and Tokyo Olympic gold.

In an all-Italian showdown between wild-card duos, Luca Nardi and Lorenzo Sonego downed Flavio Cobolli and Francesco Forti, 6-2, 6-7(7), 10-4. They will face eighth-seeded Germans Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies, recent champions in Barcelona and Munich, in the last 16.

Defending Rome champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic continued to roll though the draw at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia with a third consecutive straight-sets win on Friday. The third-seeded Croatians advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over newly crowned Madrid champions Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski.

Mektic and Pavic converted on both of their break points and saved all five against them to advance to their third ATP Tour semi-final of the season. While serving out the match, the Croatians escaped 30/40 to complete an efficient performance on Court 1 at the Foro Italico. They served five aces and won 81 per cent (29/36) of their first-serve points in the contest.


Koolhof and Skupski lead the Pepperstone ATP Doubles Team Rankings for 2022 with four titles on the season, while Mektic and Pavic are 14th in the doubles race as they seek their first title since winning Tokyo Olympic gold.

The Croatians won both of their previous tour-level semi-finals this season, in Dubai and Belgrade, but fell agonisingly short of both titles in a pair of Match Tie-breaks. In the Rome semis, they will face Italians Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini, who beat eighth seeds Andreas Mies and Kevin Krawietz, 6-7(3), 6-4, 11-9, on Friday.

In the lone doubles contest of the day to be extended to a Match Tie-break, the home favourites battled back from a set and a break down to delight the Italian crowd on Court 1. They won four straight games from 2-4 in the second and twice clawed back a mini-break in the Match Tie-break to advance to their fourth semi-final as a team this year.

The 2015 Australian Open champions are seeking their fifth tour-level title together and second of the season (Rio de Janeiro).

The opposite semi-final will feature a pair of unseeded teams as John Isner and Diego Schwartzman take on Andrey Golubev and Maximo Gonzalez. The first-time pairing of Isner and Schwartzman ended the feel-good run of alternates Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara with a 6-3, 6-2 quarter-final victory. The Kazakh-Argentine duo of Golunev and Gonzalez defeated Ariel Behar and Gonzalo Escobar, 6-2, 7-6(10), to reach the last four.

Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic earned their second ATP Tour trophy in as many weeks on Saturday at the Gonet Geneva Open, rallying past Pablo Andujar and Matwe Middelkoop 2-6, 6-2, 10-3 in the final.

The Croatians arrived in Geneva off the back of winning their maiden title of the season in Rome and played with renewed confidence at the ATP 250 event, losing just two sets en route to the crown.

In a tight final, the top seeds recovered from a slow start against Andujar and Middelkoop as they returned with greater depth and closed the net more effectively throughout to secure victory after 69 minutes.

“I am really happy about the nine-win streak,” Mektic said. “We weren’t satisfied with our results before Rome but now we are in good form and looking forward to playing in Paris.”

Mektic and Pavic were competing in their fourth tour-level final of the year and have now won their past nine matches. It is the 11th title the pair has won together, after they captured a tour-leading nine crowns in 2021, including three ATP Masters 1000 trophies.

Prior to this week, Pavic, 28, also enjoyed success in Geneva in 2018 and 2019, lifting the trophy on both occasions with Austrian Oliver Marach. Mektic, 33, was making his debut in Geneva and is now 19-13 in tour-level doubles finals.

"I have played the tournament four times and now have my third title,” Pavic said. “It is always a special week and I am always happy to be back here. I have a lot of friends here and it is kind of a different feeling for me. I enjoy playing on the centre court and the club. I play good tennis here year after year. I am very happy with the title.”

Spaniard Andujar and Dutchman Middelkoop were teaming for the first time at the ATP 250 tournament. Middelkoop captured his 12th trophy in Rotterdam in February, while Andujar was aiming to win his maiden tour-level doubles title.

The thirds seeds, who dropped just one set en route to the trophy, produced a strong serving display, firing 13 aces and winning 87 per cent (41/47) of points behind their first delivery to secure victory at the ATP 250 grass-court event in 88 minutes.

The Croatian duo of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic won its third ATP Tour title of the 2022 season on Sunday with a comeback victory in the Cinch Championships final. The second seeds won their third Match Tie-break in as many matches to secure a 3-6, 7-6(3), 10-6 victory against Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara at The Queen's Club in London.

"I was a little kid watching this tournament so many times," Mektic said during the trophy ceremony. "This is my first ever match on this court and it really is like a dream to hold this trophy now."

Pavic shared similar sentiments after claiming his 12th tour-level title with his countryman. "I haven't played on this court since 2018, and it's always a special feeling to be here, to play on this court," he said. "It's an amazing feeling and we're happy to win the title."

The reigning Wimbledon champions never trailed in the second-set tie-break or the Match Tie-break as they answered back following a lightning start from their opponents.

With Great Britain's Glasspool and Finland's Heliovaara buoyed by the support of the London crowd, the unseeded duo raced through the opening three games of the match with the loss of just one point. But their early break came on their lone break point of the contest as Mektic and Pavic began to find their range.

The Croatians created four break chances in the second set, but made their breakthrough in the tie-break behind a pair of early mini-breaks. Big serving and fast reflexes helped them maintain that advantage and send the match to a decider.

The Match Tie-break was a back-and-forth affair, with Mektic/Pavic again scoring a pair of early mini-breaks only for Glasspool/Heliovaara to get back on serve at 5-6. The Croatians brought up match point with more strong work on serve and at net, and won a lengthy rally to seal the title. They closed by winning four of the match's final five points, including the last three.

Mektic and Pavic completed their first season together in 2021 as the No. 1 team in the Pepperstone ATP Doubles Team Rankings, winning nine titles including the Tokyo Olympics and three ATP Masters 1000s. With Sunday's victory, they improved to 90-24 as a team, including 12-5 in finals and 15-1 on grass.

The Croatians defeated Matwe Middelkoop and Luke Saville 6-4, 6-2 in the Eastbourne final to win their fourth title of the 2022 ATP Tour season, all coming in the past two months.They did not drop a set this week and will now look to defend their 2021 Wimbledon title.

"We played good in Queen's we played even better here," Mektic said post-match, "so we're very comfortable now going into Wimbledon." The 33-year-old also explained how the pair's challenging Queen's Club run — in which they came from a set down to win a Match Tie-break in their last three matches — gave them confidence to dominate this week.

In the final, Metkic/Pavic won the opening set behind an early break, then saved two break points to hold for 2-2 in the second and spark a run of five straight games to close out the contest.

After winning nine tour-level titles in their first season as a team in 2021, the pair won its first trophy of this season at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome. Since claiming that ATP Masters 1000 title, they went on to win in Geneva ahead of a third-round run at Roland Garros.

"We needed to get back the confidence, added Pavic. "When we did finally in Rome, it opened up a little bit. We won the title and then obviously from Rome we lost just one match in the French and were on a good run. We have confidence, we're playing well. We're going to be an interesting team at Wimbledon."

Defending Champs Mektic/Pavic Cruise Into Wimbledon Semi-Finals

Croatian duo to meet 2019 winners Cabal/Farah
Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic’s red-hot form on the grass shows no sign of abating at Wimbledon.

The defending champions eased to a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 quarter-final victory against 11th seeds Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies on Tuesday at the grass-court major. The win extended the all-Croatian team’s winning streak to 12 matches, following its title runs at The Queen’s Club and Eastbourne in the lead-up to The Championships.

Mektic and Pavic were dominant behind serve, facing no break points and winning 85 per cent (45/53) of points behind their first delivery to keep two-time Roland Garros champions Krawietz and Mies under constant pressure. The second seeds converted four of their six break points to register a one-hour, 39-minute win and improve their record as a team at Wimbledon to 10-0.

Their next opponents will be Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah. The Colombian duo advanced to their second semi-final at the All England Lawn Tennis Club after Denis Kudla and Jack Sock retired from the quarter-final clash with the Colombians leading 6-3, 6-3, 6-7(3).

The only previous time Cabal and Farah made the semi-finals at Wimbledon, in 2019, the Colombian duo lifted the trophy. The 19-time tour-level titlists are hunting their first tour-level crown of 2022 in London.
