Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic met for the 29th time in the US Open final at Flushing Meadows on Monday.

It was the pair's third meeting in a Grand Slam championship final and saw Djokovic avenge the defeat he suffered a year earlier to Nadal in the rain-interrupted 2010 US Open final. Djokovic also triumphed in four sets when they met in the 2011 Wimbledon final.

This season World No. 1 Djokovic has closed the gap on Nadal's lead in their head-to-head series, beating the Spaniard in their past six meetings to narrow it to 16-13. All six of their meetings this season have been in finals; two at Grand Slam level and four at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments. Nadal holds marks of 9-2 on clay and 2-1 on grass, while Djokovic leads 10-5 on hard courts.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic claimed his third Grand Slam title of the season and his first at the US Open when he defeated defending champion Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-1 in a rematch of the 2010 final. With the victory, Djokovic improved to a 6-0 mark against the Spaniard in finals this season. The pair showed what was in store for the final, with their hard-hitting rallies averaging 10 strokes in the opening game. In both the first two sets Nadal led by a break of serve, and both times Djokovic came roaring back, putting Nadal under constant pressure with his retrieval skills on the baseline and his clever use of the angles, drawing the errors from the Spaniard’s racquet. Ten-time major champion Nadal showed his mettle in the third set, winning it in a tie-break after Djokovic had served for the match at 6-5. However, the Spaniard could not maintain his high level and with both men tiring in the intense contest, it was Nadal whose resistance broke down first and Djokovic broke serve twice to claim victory in four hours and nine minutes. The 24 year old became the sixth man in the Open Era to win three major titles in the same season.

The current World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 titlist, met the soon-to-be No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. For two sets, Djokovic was superb hitting 22 winners past Nadal, who was unable to hit top form in lengthy baseline rallies. But Nadal hasn't won 20 straight matches at the All England Club for nothing. The top seed battled back to win the third set to raise hopes of a first two-sets-to-love comeback in a Wimbledon final since 1927, when Henri Cochet defeated Bill Tilden. Novak Djokovic notched his 34th consecutive victory as he brought to an end Rafael Nadal’s 37-match unbeaten run on clay by beating the defending champion 7-5, 6-4 in the final of the Mutua Madrid Open. Despite never having beaten Nadal on clay in nine previous attempts, Djokovic raced out to a 4-0 lead in the Masters 1000 final. Nadal fought back and broke the Serbian to bring himself back level in the ninth game, but Djokovic claimed the opening set three games later. After recovering a service break early in the second set, Djokovic broke Nadal again in the final game to seal victory in two hours and 17 minutes. “Under the circumstances, I’ve played probably the best match of my life on clay against the World No. 1 and the player to beat on this surface,” declared Djokovic.

In one of the most electrifying men’s singles finals in Sony Ericsson Open history, Novak Djokovic defeated World No. 1 Rafael Nadal for the second consecutive ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event after winning at Indian Wells two weeks earlier, upending the Spaniard 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) to win his second Miami title. With the win, he improved to 24-0 on the season and increased his overall streak to 26 wins in a row, dating back to December’s Davis Cup Final. Novak Djokovic just cannot stop winning. The Serb extended his unbeaten run to 20 matches as he came from a set down to defeat World No. 1 Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a gripping finale. The 23-year-old Djokovic has not lost a match since falling to Roger Federer in the semi-finals of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals last November. “I don't think anybody is unbeatable. I do have the best period of my life on the tennis court, but nobody is invincible,” he said. “Still you are just trying to play your best in each match you're playing.” Victory marked Djokovic’s 21st tour-level title and his sixth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown. A day earlier, in a semi-final clash that also had the No. 2 South African Airways 2011 ATP Ranking on the line, Djokovic had defeated Federer, making him the third player to beat Nadal and Federer in the same tournament on two occasions, joining Nikolay Davydenko and David Nalbandian. In a eagerly anticipated clash, Nadal overcame Djokovic for the second time in succession. The first set was closely fought, but Djokovic required treatment for an eye problem after the seventh game of the first set that spelled the end of his challenge in front of a 17,000-strong crowd. Just as in his opening group match against Andy Roddick, Nadal took time to find his rhythm but secured two breaks of serve to Djokovic's one break in the opening set. Djokovic, unable to hit top form in the second set, explained afterwards, "Playing with one eye, especially against Nadal, is not enough. It's just incredible that this happened to me because it never happened in my life. I was feeling great. But my right eye got irritated, and from 5-5 I could not play. Nadal reversed a three-match losing streak against Djokovic, defeating the Serbian 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to win his first US Open title and become the seventh man to complete the career Grand Slam. Though rain delayed their meeting by a day, Nadal made a confident start to the championship match Monday as he broke Djokovic. Though the Serbian drew level at 2-2, Nadal regained the lead as he converted on his sixth break point opportunity of the next game. The pair was locked at 4-4, 30/30, in the second set when rain suspended play for one hour and 57 minutes. When they returned, Djokovic broke the Spaniard for a third time to force a set off of Nadal for the first time during the 2010 US Open. Djokovic was unable to maintain the momentum, however, with Nadal continually putting pressure on his serve. The top seed created 16 break point chances through the final two sets and converted on three of them (6 for 26 during the match). He claimed the victory as his opponent’s return sailed wide on championship point after three hours and 43 minutes.

Djokovic denied Nadal his 400th tour-level match win (399-91 mark) by defeating the Spaniard 7-6(5), 6-3, but was unable to book a spot in the semi-finals after Nikolay Davydenko beat Robin Soderling in the final round-robin match of the elite eight-man tournament. The match got off to a scrappy start with three successive service breaks before Djokovic was able to carve out a 3-1 lead, saving a break point in the process. Nadal levelled in the eighth game and with the crowd urging him on he was able to force a tie-break. It was Djokovic who produced the better tennis in the first part of the tie-break, moving Nadal around with a drop shot-lob combination to earn a 6-2 lead. A brief lapse in concentration from the Serbian saw Nadal fight back to 6-5, but Djokovic was able to sneak over the line as a forehand error from Nadal – one of 35 unforced errors he committed in the match – handed him a one-set lead. Nadal required a medical timeout to receive treatment on his lower back early in the second set and Djokovic immediately pounced in the fourth game, taking advantage of errors from Nadal to lead 3-1. Djokovic went on to wrap up victory in one hour and 57 minutes.

In-form Djokovic, a winner at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel just six days previous, cruised into the final with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Nadal in 77 minutes. Djokovic broke serve to love in the sixth and eighth games of an entertaining 34-minute first set. Nadal won eight of 18 service points, including three aces, and 12 points overall. Djokovic opened up a 3-0 lead in the second set, courtesy of another service break to love in the second game. At 4-2, Djokovic recovered from 15/30 by winning three points in a row. Nadal kept fighting, but never looked likely to reach his first indoor final since February at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam. "There's not much to say about today's performance, except it was perfect," said Djokovic, who hit 31 winners. "[It was] exactly the way I wanted it. I have done, tactically-wise, everything that I imagined to do and planned to do before the match. I was very aggressive. took the early control of the match over my opponent, and it paid off. I was hitting winners from all over the court and really trying to keep that momentum going throughout the whole match. I didn't give him many chances to come back into the match."

Djokovic snapped a five-match losing streak against Nadal, repeating his 2008 semi-final win over the Spaniard in Cincinnati to charge into the final for the second consecutive year. He raced away with the first set in 29 minutes and then closed out the 6-1, 6-4 win in 91 minutes after facing just one break point in the match. Nadal, playing just his second tournament back since Roland Garros as he battled knee tendinitis, fought valiantly in the second set to make the match a contest. He staved off three break points in the opening game of the second set, forced Djokovic to save a break point at 4-3 and then also took Djokovic to deuce in the final game of the match before his young rival served out just his fifth win in 19 meetings with Nadal. "Obviously I have to be very pleased with the way I played," said Djokovic, who won 75 per cent of first-serves points. "This has been one of the best matches of the season so far. I was trying to be from the first point in the control of the match, be very aggressive, and take the chances on each shot or ball that I had. That's what I did."

For the third time in five weeks the pair met. It was dramatic theatre and arguably their best match to date. Nadal saved three match points in a dramatic final-set tie-break to beat Djokovic 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(9) in four hours and two minutes for a spot in the final. It is believed to be the longest best-of-three sets match on the ATP World Tour in the Open Era (since 1968). It was the first time Nadal had played a third set tie-break on clay since 11 July 2003, when he lost to Nicolas Lapentti at Bastad, Sweden. Djokovic had the better of the opening exchanges and led Nadal 3-0 – courtesy of service break in the second game. The third seed managed to maintain his advantage, winning 20 of 26 service points to take the first set in 51 minutes. Djokovic’s fluency continued in the second set, but he was left to rue missed opportunities for service breaks in the third and ninth games. Nadal managed to fight off another break point in an 11-minute game for a 6-5 lead and went on to create his first break point opportunity, a set point, in the next game. Nadal maintained his record of never losing a tie-break against Djokovic to level the score line. Djokovic regained his composure to open up a 3-1 lead, after breaking Nadal in the fourth game. But Nadal responded with an immediate service break of his own. In the third-set tie-break Djokovic created his first match point when he hit a forehand winner for a 6-5 lead, but he could not capitalise on the chance as Nadal hit a forehand winner down the line from a long baseline rally. A second match point went begging on a Nadal second serve at 7-6, when Nadal wrong-footed Djokovic with a series of forehands before hitting the winning forehand stroke on approach to the net. Nadal’s first match point came and went at 8-7. Djokovic hit a nerveless forehand winner, having hit a second serve to Nadal’s forehand, for his third match point at 9-8 after four hours of play. Nadal gritted his teeth once again, and urged on by his compatriots was able to recover to 10-9 courtesy of a Djokovic forehand in the net and a forehand winner down the line. Nadal seized control of his second match point by forcing Djokovic out wide to lunge for a forehand, which landed in the net.

Two weeks on from their keenly contested match in the final of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, Nadal and Djokovic met in an ATP World Tour final for the fourth time at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome. Nadal served for the first set twice, but each time was thwarted by a Djokovic determined to defend his title at the Foro Italico. The Spaniard raised his level in the first-set tie-break though before breaking twice in the second set to secure his 30th consecutive clay-court victory and a record fourth Internazionali BNL d'Italia title after two hours and three minutes of play. Nadal’s victory had added significance for Djokovic, who will surrender his No. 3 South African Airways 2009 ATP Ranking to current No. 4 Andy Murray when the 2008 Rome points drop on 11 May.

In their third meeting in an ATP World Tour final, Nadal prevailed over Djokovic 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 to clinch his fifth straight title at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Nadal reeled off five straight games to take the opening set in 63 minutes, but dropped his first set in Monte-Carlo since the 2006 final after Djokovic went up two early breaks in the following set. In a key first game of the third set, Nadal recovered from a 0-30 deficit and saved three break points – completing a 16-minute opening game with a forehand crosscourt winner – and then claimed a 2-0 lead in the next game when a Djokovic forehand hit the net tape and landed wide. Djokovic reclaimed a break of serve to make it 2-1, but Nadal flexed his muscles and won four straight games – dropping just three points – to wrap up victory in two hours and 44 minutes.

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester presented the Spaniard with his fifth trophy of the season and his third in succession following wins in Hamburg and Roland Garros. With the win, Nadal became the first reigning French Open champion to win at The Queen’s Club since Ilie Nastase in 1973 and the first Spaniard to win here since Andres Gimeno in 1960. Rafael Nadal came out on top in the battle for the No. 2 position in the South African Airways ATP Rankings with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Novak Djokovic in a titanic battle over three hours and three minutes. It was the greatest match of their rivalry to date. In a first set featuring five breaks of serve under the roof on Center Court, Djokovic began in blistering form, breaking Nadal early to lead 3-0. The pressure began to tell on Djokovic, and Nadal broke back to lead 5-4. However, with Nadal serving for the set, Djokovic relaxed, went for his shots and it paid off as he leveled for 5-5. With the atmosphere rising, 2007 finalist Nadal found more outstanding tennis and a forehand pass broke Djokovic’s serve again and gave Nadal the 6-5 lead. This time Nadal did not falter and he served it out after 72 minutes. Both men continued to produce their finest tennis for much of the second set, before Djokovic was able to edge out a break of serve to lead 3-2 with some deep, aggressive hitting bullying Nadal into errors. With Nadal serving at 2-5, 15-30, a reflex volley from Djokovic set up two set points and the pressure told on Nadal as he put a forehand wide for Djokovic to level the match. Nadal immediately earned a break of serve in the third set. After failing to convert break back chances, Djokovic’s resistance began to crumble.

Rafael Nadal reached his fifth career Grand Slam final after fourth seed Novak Djokovic retired due to severe blisters on his left toe. Djokovic did not look fully fit, after two epic victories over Lleyton Hewitt in the fourth round and Marcos Baghdatis in the quarterfinals. Nadal began the match sluggishly dropping his opening service game to hand his opponent a 2-0 lead, which Djokovic capitalised on with the first set in 37 minutes. World No. 5 Djokovic dropped his serve twice in the second and sixth games of the second set, which Nadal clinched in 35 minutes. The trainer was then called at one set apiece to bandage a blister on the little toe of Djokovic’s left foot. The Serbian attempted to play on but, after being broken in the third and fifth games of the set, decided to call a halt at his fifth career grass-court event.

Both started the semifinal as the only ATP players to have broken the 40-win plateau on the
season. Novak Djokovic, a first-time Grand Slam semifinalist, challenged Rafael Nadal in the 66-minute first set as he came from down two breaks to get back on serve at five games all. Otóż wydaje mi się, że Djoković specjalnej taktyki na Nadala nie ma, po prostu wytrzymuje wymiany i gra częściej winnery, Rafa nie tyle gra z nim słabo, co oczekuje, że w końcu zrobi błąd lub zagra krócej, nie dzieje się tak, więc traci rezon i albo przegrywa wymiany, albo stara się grać w linie, a ponieważ nie jest urodzonym shotmakerem (raczej rozprowadza po korcie i dopiero wtedy przyciska jakimś mocniejszym uderzeniem), to często pudłuje (np. piłka na pierwszego seta w finale Wimbledonu), poza RG i może Rzymem grał optymalnie, trafił tylko na jeszcze lepszego defensora, no i co tu ukrywać, wszechstronniejszego tenisistę w ataku, który w dodatku pewnie operuje oburęcznym backhandem, więc liczba punktów Hiszpana zyskanych po źle zagranych backhandach przeciwników po jego forehandowym topspinie zostaje drastycznie zmniejszona, właściwie dopóki Novak biega do wszystkiego to Nadal nie ma mu czym zagrozić poza serwisem, bo te topspiny są zupełnie niegroźne dla Serba.

Novak Djoković w finale Us Open 2011 po raz szósty z rzędu pokonał Rafaela Nadala, wygrywając tym samym 13 pojedynek w karierze przeciwko Hiszpanowi. Serb poprawił także swoją statystykę przeciwko Nadalowi w meczach finałowych, wielkoszlemowych i rozgrywkach na nawierzchni hard.

Johnathan, zgadzam się z tobą w 100%. Kiedy Novak nie miał takiej wytrzymałości jaką ma dzisiaj, to Nadala nikt nie mógł powstrzymać. Serb jest pierwszym zawodnikiem w turze, który wytrzymuje tempo jakie nadaje Nadal (czasem dokonywał tego Roger, lecz nie na taką skalę), biega do każdej piłki i przebija ją na drugą stronę. Djokovic przerósł Rafę pod względem wytrzymałościowym i to właśnie dlatego nie ma teraz sobie równych. W obecnych czasach główną rolę gra przygotowanie fizyczne, więc jeśli Djoko utrzyma taką formę to przez długi czas nikt może nie być w stanie z nim konkurować (tym bardziej, że Serb też potrafi grać w piękny, techniczny sposób, lecz rzadko z niego korzysta).

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic faces a supremely fast turnaround if he is to feature from the start in Serbia’s bid to reach the Davis Cup final. Fresh from winning the US Open title on Monday, the 24 year old embarked on a whirlwind media tour in New York on Tuesday and was due to arrive back in his capital city of Belgrade on Wednesday.

Defending Davis Cup champion Serbia faces Argentina in the World Group semi-finals, with the tie set to begin on Friday. Djokovic is joined on the home team by US Open quarter-finalist Janko Tipsarevic, Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic, while Juan Martin del Potro and David Nalbandian spearhead the Argentine campaign.

In answer to whether Djokovic may be rested in Friday’s singles rubbers, Serbian Davis Cup captain Bogdan Obradovic said, "It is too early for such a decision. We will see when he arrives how he feels. We will sit and talk, all of us. There are two days more of practising. We are very eager to see him, to join us, as always after big wins. Novak always brings lot of positive energy."

Djokovic found himself in a similar position a year ago, travelling to Belgrade from New York after contesting a Monday final at the US Open, and was subsequently rested on the first day’s play against the Czech Republic in the semi-finals. That tie saw Serbia come back from two-rubbers-to-one down to clinch a 3-2 victory, with Djokovic winning the fourth singles rubber against Tomas Berdych.

Beaten US Open finalist Rafael Nadal is also pulling out all the stops to represent Spain in the other semi-final against France. The Mallorcan arrived in Cordoba late on Tuesday night, having travelled on a private jet with the president of the Spanish Tennis Federation, José Luis Escañuela. He faces not only the difficulties of weariness and jetlag, but also has the added challenge of switching back to clay after weeks pounding the North American hard courts, with only two days to practise.

"I am tired for sure," admitted Nadal. "It’s only Wednesday, I played a very long match on Monday. I arrived late yesterday and for sure it is a challenge for me to be here. I am trying for my country, but it’s tough.

"I am happy with what happened in New York," continued the Spaniard. "I fought a lot, I was playing in the right way, but Djokovic did fantastic. For me it’s not a mental problem (playing Davis Cup), it’s more of a physical problem. If we talk about the mental part, I am ready to play."

Cóż, Nadal w kwiecie wieku i u szczytu formy jest rozbijany przez Djokovicia, który w zasadzie prezentuje to samo co on, tylko przerasta go jakością i stylem.

Nadal zbudował swoją pozycję, dlatego że trafił akurat na Federera, któremu ten styl zupełnie nie leżał, jednak kwestią czasu było pojawienie się kogoś na kim to przebijanie nie będzie robić wrażenia i wtedy wyjdzie szydło z worka. Przyszedł Djoković, który wytrzymuje te mordercze wymiany i szybko okazało się, że Rafie brakuje argumentów. "Król" nagle staje się nagi i nie umie niczego zmienić, bo innymi opcjami taktyczno-technicznymi nie dysponuje. Wszystkie tegoroczne mecze z Novakiem wyglądały podobnie - Hiszpan rzucał na szalę wszystko co ma, próbował wszystkich markowych zagrań, ale niemal za każdym razem odbijał się jak od ściany, bo Joker bezceremonialnie ogrywał go jego własną bronią - defensywą. W finale US Open poza trzecim setem też był przecież bezradny. I nie sądzę, aby mógł już w swoim tenisie coś zmodyfikować. Według mnie musi po prostu czekać, aż Serbowi powinie się noga albo wypali się fizycznie.

Bardzo trudno jednoznacznie powiedzieć, czy ktoś gra gorzej, czy nie, ale ja jestem zdania, że to Djoković znacząco podwyższył loty niż Nadal je obniżył. Przecież gdyby nie ta eksplozja formy Novaka, Rafa poza AO wygrałby wszystkie najważniejsze turnieje. Wtedy też wyłapałbyś tę rzekomą baloniadę z backhandu lub jakieś minimalne spóźnienia do piłek w porównaniu z zeszłym sezonem?

Djoković opracował strategię wybitnie na rozpracowanie Nadala, jest jego szybszą, wytrzymalszą i dokładniejszą wersją, po prostu góruje nad nim w każdym elemencie. Wiem, że ciężko pogodzić Ci się z tym, że Twojemu tenisowemu idolowi wystrzelił taki konkurent i to w momencie wydawało się niezagrożonej dominacji, ale wyniki i przebieg ich tegorocznych meczów mówią same za siebie i nic tego nie zmieni.

Owszem, to prawda. Zdecydowanie większa to zasługa Djokovicia, a nie Nadala. Co nie zmienia faktu, że Nadal loty w tym sezonie obniżył. Ja to szacuję na około 70% możliwości z zeszłego roku. Jak widać na większość wystarcza, ale na Djoka w tej dyspozycji nie.

Co więcej, ja się na żadną dominację nie nastawiałem. Już w 2008 roku zapowiadało się na ogólnoświatową demolkę, a zderzenie z rzeczywistością przyszło chyba szybciej, niż się ktokolwiek spodziewał.

Nadala stać na ZNACZNIE lepszą grę, szczególnie z prawej strony i serwisowo.

Otwarte pytanie jest takie, czy ta znacznie lepsza gra Nadala będzie skutecznym antidotum na Nole? Pierwsze 5 porażek, o dziwo, nie dało jednoznacznej odpowiedzi. Dopiero finał USO uświadomił nam pewne sprawy, gdzie walczący jak lew Hiszpan przegrał dość wyraźnie. Wydarzenia na korcie są dla Rafy dość brutalne i często nakazują przychylenie się do zdania Johnathana - Nadal przy regularnym Djokoviciu był długimi momentami całkowicie bezradny, czym w wielu sekwencjach pojedynku Serb zasadniczo obnażył niedoskonałości tenisa Hiszpana. Zobaczymy, jak to się rozwinie, lider rankingu nie będzie przecież takiej formy trzymał wiecznie.

Walczyć jak lew to sobie może, ale dwóch drugich serwisów i balona z BH to nie ukryje
Wiadomo, że musiałaby zajść sekwencja sprzyjających zdarzeń, żeby pokonać Djokovicia w tej dyspozycji. I o ile uważam, że wymienione przeze mnie czynniki umożliwiłyby wygraną (już w Miami było blisko, a tam było daleko do ideału), o tyle nie łudzę się, że do tego dojdzie w tym sezonie. Jak w końcu Rafa wygra (w to akurat wierzę ), to pewnie przez słabszy dzień Serba, a nie swoją genialną grę.

Nie uważam, żeby na przykład podczas półfinału w Madrycie (2009) Djoković grał gorzej niż teraz, a jednak udało się to spotkanie wygrać (konsekwencje były, jakie były). Myślę, że spokojnie da się to powtórzyć. Pytanie tylko: jak i kiedy?

Nie mam bladego pojęcia, dlaczego u większości fanów Rafy wytworzyło się przekonanie, że forma z US Open 2010 jest jego NORMĄ, w szczególności serwisową.
Tenis pokazywany przez Nadala w Nowym Jorku był jednorazowym wyskokiem, potwierdzonym tym, iż podobna gra nigdy już u niego nie wystąpiła- na tak długim odcinku czasu.
Myślę, że jako ludzie generalnie zaznajomieni ze sportem znacie pojęcie szczytu formy, który u Hiszpana przypadł na lata 2008-2010 z przerwą na denną, drugą połowę roku 2009.
Przypominam niektórym, iż Nadal rozpoczął bardzo intensywną przygodę z ATP na najwyższym poziomie w wieku 17-18 lat, teraz ma ich ponad 25, a jak chyba większość pamięta, Federer zaczął, mniej więcej, w tym okresie życia dość mocno dołować, mimo faktu, że jego gra jest znacznie mniej uciążliwa dla organizmu oraz zdecydowanie później, niż u Rafaela, wystąpił u niego przełom w karierze.

Nadal znajduję się obecnie w okresie starzenia się, a nie tenisowego dorastania do pewnego optimum, jakie można osiągnąć u danego zawodnika.

A to, że zarówno Hiszpan, jak i mocno zdziadziały Federer robią takie wyniki, pomimo faktu, iż pierwszy gra słabiej, a drugi znajduje się o krok od tenisowego grobu, świadczą jedynie o sile obecnych rozgrywek i rzekomego, znakomitego zaplecza( najlepszego od lat 80 lol)
