W dniach 22-24 września 2017 roku rozegrana zostanie pierwsza edycja Pucharu Lavera. Podczas trzydniowego spotkania w praskiej hali O2 Arena rywalizować ze sobą będą najlepsi tenisiści z Europy i Reszty Świata.

Z inicjatywą rozgrywania takiego meczu wyszedł Roger Federer, dla którego Rod Laver od zawsze był wielkim idolem. Szwajcar i jego agencja Team8 mają wielki szacunek do legendarnego Australijczyka. Laver to jedyny człowiek w historii, który dwukrotnie skompletował Klasycznego Wielkiego Szlema. Po raz pierwszy uczynił to w erze tenisa amatorskiego (1962), a następnie dokonał tego w erze otwartej (1969).

Puchar Lavera to najbardziej ekscytujący turniej w tenisie od wielu lat, dlatego nie mogę się już doczekać wspólnych występów u boku moich kortowych rywali, takich jak Rafa i Tomas. Tak naprawdę to nigdy nie mieliśmy okazji, aby być w jednej drużynie, grać razem debla i wspierać się. To będzie nowe doświadczenie dla tenisistów i fanów, dlatego cieszę się, że pierwsza edycja Pucharu Lavera odbędzie się w tak pięknym mieście jak Praga - powiedział Federer.
Wybór czeskiej stolicy nie jest przypadkowy. We wrześniu minie 10. rocznica od ostatniej wizyty Federera w tym mieście, w ramach spotkania barażowego o Grupę Światową Pucharu Davisa. Do tego czescy fani znani są z niesamowitego dopingu. - Myślę, że nie będzie przesadą, gdy powiem, że mamy najlepszych kibiców na świecie, dlatego ten turniej będzie dla nich nie lada gratką. Wiem, że będą mocno wspierać swoich ulubionych tenisistów - stwierdził Tomas Berdych.

Kapitanem Europy został Bjoern Borg, zaś Reszty Świata John McEnroe. Już w sierpniu potwierdzono, że w pierwszej edycji, która zostanie rozegrana w dniach 22-24 września 2017 roku w Pradze, wezmą udział Roger Federer i Rafael Nadal. Organizatorzy spodziewają się sporego zainteresowania, dlatego rozpoczynająca się 24 lutego sprzedaż biletów może zakończyć się błyskawicznie.

Najważniejsze postanowienia odnośnie formuły rozgrywania Pucharu Lavera:
1) Każda drużyna będzie się składała z sześciu tenisistów. Czterech z nich zostanie wybranych na bazie rankingu ATP po zakończeniu Wimbledonu, natomiast dwóch wyznaczą kapitanowie. Opiekunowie obu zespołów będą odpowiedzialni za nominacje poszczególnych zawodników do kolejnych pojedynków.
2) Turniej będzie rozgrywany przez trzy dni (piątek, sobota, niedziela) na korcie o nawierzchni twardej. Każdego dnia odbędą się po trzy mecze singlowe i jeden deblowy - wszystkie w formule do dwóch wygranych setów (trzeci set będzie rozgrywany jako super tie break).
3) Każdy tenisista przynajmniej raz musi wystąpić w meczu singlowym na przestrzeni trzech dni, ale maksymalnie będzie mógł wziąć udział tylko w dwóch pojedynkach. Do meczów deblowych kapitanowie będą musieli wyznaczyć przynajmniej czterech różnych zawodników. Poszczególne mecze zostaną ustalone na podstawie listy zgłoszeń podanej przez opiekunów obu zespołów przed każdym dniem.
4) Za zwycięstwa w piątkowych meczach drużyny otrzymają po jednym punkcie, za zwycięstwa w sobotnich meczach po dwa punkty, zaś za zwycięstwa w niedzielnych meczach po trzy punkty. Zespół z największą liczbą punktów sięgnie po Puchar Lavera. Jeśli po 12 meczach wynik będzie remisowy, to zostanie rozegrany dodatkowy pojedynek deblowy.

ESPN International has signed an exclusive agreement to broadcast the Laver Cup, an international men’s tennis competition between an elite team of players from Europe against a team of their counterparts from the rest of the world. Under the three-year agreement, beginning with the inaugural event September 22 – 24 – in Prague – and running through 2019, ESPN has live exclusivity for its multi-media platforms to broadcast the event in Brazil, Latin America and the Caribbean.

The new unique format will unite fierce on-court rivals as teammates. During the three-day tournament, six of the best tennis players from Europe will play against six of their counterparts from the World team. The format will showcase the sport’s superstars competing on the same teams. The competition is named after Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, the only player with two calendar Grand Slams and 200 career titles to date. There will be 12 matches played over three days (nine singles and three doubles), with the number of points awarded for victories increasing each day. Each player will take the court once or twice for singles, with at least four of the six taking part in doubles.

Tennis legend Bjorn Borg will captain the European team and John McEnroe will lead the rest of the world. Borg and McEnroe have played each other 22 times, winning 11 matches each. Rafael Nadal (1), Roger Federer (2), Marin Cilic (5), Dominic Thiem (7), Tomas Berdych (19) and Alexander Zverev (4) have committed to represent Team Europe, while Milos Raonic (11) will be joined by John Isner (17), Jack Sock (21), Sam Querrey (16), Juan Martin del Potro (24) and Denis Shapovalov (51) for Team World.

Tennis doesn’t have a marquee weekend like the NBA all-star game or an NFL pro-bowl; the closest thing is the Davis Cup – although that faces plenty of problems. With the Laver Cup, we might finally be in luck. Here we’ve got the greatest players in the world divided into teams, coached by the previous generation’s greatest players and playing in the honour of the first truly great player — how can it not be great?

If you asked me if I’d prefer to see Roger and Rafa compete in the final of one more Grand Slam or watch this I’d pick the former but it would make me hesitate for 1.7 seconds.
58-year-old John McEnroe blowing a gasket. I say this as someone who proudly has racquet smashing inside their top 5 favourite things about tennis. If you don’t want to see one more outburst from the great outburster that’s fine but you’re just lying to yourself.
The black court. Because why can’t a tennis court look sexy?
Frances Tiafoe and Denis Shapovalov with something to prove. Don’t think these two aren’t taking notice when you second guess why they’re in an event with the greatest players of all time. I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up as MVPs.
Watching Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg be cool and spending an ordinate amount of time trying to decide who of them is cooler.
The team dynamics. For Team Europe I’ve got Roger Federer as George Clooney, Nadal as Pitt, Cilic as Damon, Zverev and Thiem as Casey Affleck and Scott Caan, Tomas Berdych as Julia Roberts and Borg as Elliot Gould. What about Team World?
Tomas Berdych the hometown hero. The criminally underrated Czech who, if he were born ten years earlier and didn’t have to play the big four in the semifinal of every single Grand Slam and would probably have two or three majors to his name, finally gets to be the crowd favourite. Yay.
The bench. Tennis has always had great on-court player reactions but we rarely get any memeable content from the stands. Instead of half asleep tennis coaches softly clapping after every point we’ll get the game’s best cheering on teammates with their own personal touch. Can’t wait.
The Americans. Jack Sock, Sam Querrey and John Isner have all won multiple major titles and Olympic gold medals in doubles. Given doubles is pretty important in this format, Team World could have quite the X-factor.
Nick Kyrgios. Because anything with NK Rising is always gonna be good.
