Bernard Tomic handed wildcard to defend his Apia International Sydney title

Obrazek

Bernard Tomic has needed a wildcard entry to make the field and defend his only ATP Tour title in Sydney next month.

Tomic's ranking of No.51 in the world fell just outside the cut-off point of No.49 for the men's field at the Sydney International from January 5-11.

But organisers were quick to hand Tomic their first wildcard on Thursday, ensuring the 21-year-old can attempt to repeat his heroics of early this year, when he won through to beat South Africa's Kevin Anderson in the final.

Tomic will have his work cut out against a field headed by resurgent world No.5 Juan Martin Del Potro.

Exciting Wimbledon semi-finalist Jerzy Janowicz will make his first appearance at the tournament and joins world No.13 Nicolas Almagro, No.16 Fabio Fognini and former champions Jarkko Nieminen and Dmitry Tursunov.

Australian players including Marinko Matosevic, Matt Ebden and Nick Kyrgios could also take part in the event as potential wildcard participants.

Tomic zadowolony z nowego szkoleniowca

- Mam z nim dobry kontakt. Na treningach jest także mój ojciec. On również akceptuje Velimira - powiedział.

Chorwat przybył do Australii w zeszłym tygodniu, by zająć się przygotowaniami Tomicia do startu sezonu 2014.

Roger Federer not surprised by Bernard Tomic's fall from grace but says he can bounce back

Obrazek
Roger Federer was given a tough match by Bernard Tomic in Melbourne earlier this year.

Roger Federer says Bernard Tomic needs to make a move into the top 25 next year, putting behind him the wreckage of the final weeks of his 2013 season with a strategy to simplify his approach to tennis.

Tomic opens his Australian summer campaign on Saturday night in Perth at the Hopman Cup when he plays Canadian Milos Raonic, the world No.11.

Federer, who opens his quest to rebuild a challenge for grand slam honours in 2014 at the Brisbane International, is plainly surprised that the young Australian he beat in the third round at Melbourne Park last January has since gone backwards in the rankings by eight places.

Federer's career trajectory is one which could give food for thought to Tomic, 21, and his father John, who is banned as coach until May by the ATP Tour for injuring practice partner Thomas Drouet.

"Clearly, we all expect more from Bernard after the great start he had in Sydney and then at the Australian Open,'' Federer saidfrom his training base in Dubai.

"He has had a very tough season, let's be honest.

"We know he has a higher gear to go to and has great potential. It's going to be one of those seasons where he (needs to) prove himself on the tour and not lingering around No.50 in the world and move inside the top 25.

"He struggled all the way through which wasn't surprising after what happened. I hope he can play a more simpler way mentally. It's hard playing when distracted for a long period of the time.''

Tomic lost his last six main draw matches in 2013.

"It is a lot. But it's happened before,'' Federer said.

"In the beginning, every problem you have is almost a new problem. When you are in the public eye, it's not as simple as you sometimes think it is.

"You have to be able to clear things out. As he is getting older, I am sure he is learning how to do that.''

Even though Tomic has come to prominence in an era in which the average age of the top-100 men is 27 years, a comparison of his achievements from the ages of 18-21 to Federer's is interesting.

Tomic reached his first grand slam quarter-final at 18 years, eight months, at Wimbledon, and in the year Federer turned 18, 1999, the Swiss right-hander went 13-17 for the season.

Federer was aged 19 years, seven months when he made his first grand slam quarter-final.

On his 21st birthday, he was ranked No.13. Tomic was ranked No.51 when he turned 21 in October.

Andy Murray, to cite a comparison other than the extraordinary Federer, was No.3 on his 21st birthday.

"I was famous (when I was 21) for being able to beat people on any day, but not being consistent enough. It wasn't enough,'' said Federer, who broke through to win the 2003 Wimbledon title a month from his 22nd birthday.

Milos Raonic will provide an immediate measuring stick of how Tomic has rebounded via his pre-season in the Hopman Cup, having already built a trend of playing some of his best tennis in Australia after a training block.

Rod Laver said earlier this month that he expected Raonic, ranked 11th, to be the next man other than the "Big Four'' - Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Federer and Murray - to win a grand slam title.

Tomic last month hired Croatian Vladimir Zovko as coach and John Tomic previously foreshadowed he intended to be more in the "background'' in the coaching of his son.

Sam Stosur and Canadian Eugenie Bouchard are the other players in the Australia-Canada Hopman Cup tie.

Bernard Tomic aims to lose party boy image ahead of Australian summer
Obrazek
BERNARD Tomic wants to ditch his party boy image and believes a humble approach will help him crack tennis' top 20 in 2014.

Tomic's previous goal of becoming a top 10 player this year seemed less far-fetched when he won the Sydney International and made it to the third round of the Australian Open in January.

But his campaign began to unravel with off-court distractions, which included his father and coach John being banned from tournaments after an incident that left Tomic's former hitting partner Thomas Drouet with a broken nose.

Tomic's second half to the year was blighted by a series of first-round bombouts, and the 21-year-old later enhanced his party boy reputation after being photographed getting a lap dance during Schoolies' week on the Gold Coast.

But the world No.51 wants to be known as a great tennis player rather than a great party goer.

"I've been young, and maybe I lost my head there a little bit," Tomic said.

"But I've got to stay humble. I've got to work hard.

"The next step for me is the top 25, the top 20. Once I get in there, I can only move forward."

Tomic will begin his Australian Open preparations at Perth's Hopman Cup, where he will team with Sam Stosur in a bid to break Australia's 15-year title drought.

Their first assignment is against Canada on Saturday, when Tomic will take on world No.11 Milos Raonic.

Tomic has produced some of his finest tennis on Australian soil, including a win over former world No.1 Novak Djokovic in Perth last summer.

But the 196cm right-hander has struggled to maintain his health and form overseas.

"Once the tour starts, I don't take care of my body as well as I should," Tomic said.

"I play a lot of tournaments. I get sick a lot of the time. So I'm always up and down.

"It's difficult to control that.

"In Australia, I seem to rest and prepare very good. And I play good tennis in the summer.

"Hopefully I can keep it up in 2014."

Seventeen-times grand slam champion Roger Federer says Tomic needs to make a move into the top 25 next year, as well as simplify his approach to tennis.

Tomic agreed with the Swiss great, and said his new coach, Croatian Velimir Zovko, had helped him with his discipline.

Zovko will work with Tomic's dad John, who is banned from attending tennis tournaments until May.

E tam, po prostu nie można być aż takim idiotą.

Raczej nigdy mu nie będę kibicować, ale ma za duży potencjał, żeby w krainie biedy i nędzy płynącej o nazwie ATP spisać go na straty.

Tomic: 'I'm back into tennis now'
Obrazek

Bernard Tomic, who will attempt to defend his Sydney title this coming week, says he has refocused and feels good about his game. Tomic ended 2013 with five straight first-round losses, and received some criticism after celebrating his 21st birthday in November with lap dancers at a night club.

''Everyone has their off time. Some people use it differently than others,'' Tomic told the Sydney Morning Herald. “But I'm back into tennis now, back into tournaments, and this is something that is very important for me and I'm ready for the Australian summer and hopefully I can do better because each year I've started doing better and better in Australia. So hopefully this is going to be an even better one.''

Bernard Tomic turns it on for father John as fans turn away from Sydney

Bernard Tomic, it could be argued, performed for a bigger crowd at Schoolies.

Despite completely dominating his first outing at the 2014 Sydney International - destroying Spaniard Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-0 at the Sydney Olympic Tennis Centre yesterday - the controversial Aussie played before a Ken Rosewall Arena that, at best, was half full.

While his father John, who is banned from the upcoming Australian Open, made a surprise appearance courtside, the low crowd numbers suggest the Australian public is far from sold on the 21-year-old defending champion who has endured a raft of negative headlines, including his Gold Coast nightclub lap dance from two school leavers in November.

Yet on the opening day his 2014 Sydney tilt, Tomic insisted not only was he ready to defend the trophy, his sole ATP win of last year, but had "a very good feeling" thanks to the old man being courtside.

"Obviously my dad is still there,'' Tomic said last night.

"He's the one that me taught me to play like this.

"I've spent hours with him that I probably won't spend with no one else in my life. He knows me the best and is one of the reasons I am who I am today.

Obrazek

"My new coach is helping me out in a new way but I've still got my dad on my side, which is very important to me. I know his ban will finish very soon, in a few months, and he'll be back to helping me. I'm happy. Today I played very good, felt very good . . . I've always got two open minds and they're helping me, I'm positive with it and thankful for that."

John Tomic has been banned from ATP events for a year after assaulting Bernard's practice partner Thomas Drouet in May last year, for which he received a suspended sentence.

Yet while the old man won't be seen at Melbourne Park - even as a spectator after Tennis Australia boss Craig Tiley said he was barred from the grounds - he is able to enter other venues as a paying fan at the discretion of individual tournament directors.

When asked if he had a contingency plan for the Australian Open, Tomic, who has employed a new coach in Velimir Zovko, continued: "Yeah, well I've moved down to Melbourne, so Melbourne is home for me now.

Obrazek

"Obviously he (dad) can't come in, but that's fine. I'll see him at home. If there is anything I need to hear, he'll tell me."

Tomic will meet Blaz Kavcic in the second round, the Slovenian qualifier having downed Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 6-3.

And it's expected Tomic senior will again by present, with tournament boss Craig Watson confirming permission had been granted to attend the Australian Open tune-up, although he is strictly prohibited from entering the players' area.

"The ATP has banned John Tomic - as is public knowledge - which excludes him from getting credentials and being in other accreditable areas," Watson said.

"There is nothing that prohibits the events agreeing to John being in public areas of the ground and I've agreed to allow that to happen."

Tomic also insisted he was disappointed despite having failed to make his goal of reaching the top 10 in 2013.

"You know, if I'm 25 years old, 26 years old I would probably feel like that,'' he said. "But I've just turned 21, so I think I'm at the right age."
