Bernard Tomic on track for another comeback



Bernard Tomic's first comeback from double hip surgery lasted for the 26 minutes it took the Queenslander to suffer the quickest recorded loss in ATP history. His next has been pencilled in for the qualifying rounds of the Madrid Open at the end of next week.

Tomic, who won just 13 points against Jarkko Nieminen in that ill-advised return in Miami on March 21, has borne a full load on the practice court for the past three weeks, having recovered well from the January procedures on both hips that followed his first-round injury retirement at the Australian Open against Rafael Nadal.

His ranking now having slipped to 71st, and No.4 in Australia behind Lleyton Hewitt, Matt Ebden and Marinko Matosevic, the 21-year-old apparently hopes to be fit and healthy to contest qualifying in Madrid – the scene of his father John's infamous headbutting incident involving hitting partner Thomas Drouet outside the player hotel almost a year ago.

Tomic snr's 12-month tournament ban is being reviewed before it expires on May 4, with no indication yet about whether it will be extended. The ATP-imposed suspension has been enforced at all but the two tournaments – Queen's Club and Sydney – where Tomic attended his son's matches as a paying spectator.

Tennis Australia president Stephen Healy said Tomic's status was a matter for the ATP World Tour, and said TA had not "taken a view" on the issue. But Healy did urge Tomic jnr to start making the most of his undoubted potential, three years after he famously reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals from qualifying.

"I think it's really important Bernard gets his act together," Healy said. "He's a huge talent, and he's got to make a decision how he's going to maximise his talent. Only he knows how that's going to work – whether that's with his father, or with another coach who has control, that's the decision he’s got to make, and time will pass him by if he doesn't make a good decision."

"From our point of view, if we've got Bernard, and we've got Nick Kyrgios and we've got Thanasi Kokkinakis, we're a force to be reckoned with in a couple of years. It will be fantastic, so I really hope he does make some good decisions."

Krygios and Kokkinakis met for the first time at senior level at the Savannah Challenger in the US on Wednesday. Kyrgios, 19, who resumed from an elbow injury to claim last week's Sarasota Open, beat his close friend and Davis Cup teammate 6-1, 6-3 on the green clay to enhance his French Open wildcard prospects ahead of the May 25 grand slam.

Tomic Starting Afresh On The Grass

It’s not been the start to the season that Bernard Tomic hoped for. While his contemporaries have pushed on towards the Top 10, the Australian saw his campaign curtailed in January as he underwent bilateral hip surgery after retiring in the Australian Open first round against Rafael Nadal.

But, after a scratchy comeback on the European clay, the 21-year-old Tomic is now looking to make a fresh start to his 2014 season on the grass, where he has enjoyed some of the best results of his young career. He opened his bid Monday with a hard-fought three-set win over Tim Smyczek at the Aegon Championships in London.

“It’s been very difficult. I played well at the start of the year like I always do, then I was meant to play Nadal at the Australian Open and I couldn’t finish the match unfortunately,” said Tomic, who reached the Sydney final in the second week of the season (l. to del Potro).

“But we needed to do two hip operations. I felt pretty strange for a few months and it was a difficult process in the rehab. There was a lot of time that I had to spend building up my strength and flexibility.

“The last sort of month has been matches for me, which has been important to get back. I’m OK now and I’m on my favourite surface, grass. I’m feeling pretty good and I’m happy that the surgery went well because you never know sometimes on that.”

The surgeries Tomic underwent corrected a lifelong structural problem by reshaping the head of his femur to allow better range of movement, and also repaired labrum and ligament tears. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald in February, Tomic’s physio, Ivan Gutierrez, predicted Tomic will eventually move up to 30 per cent more freely as a result.

“I sort of knew about it at the back of my mind when I was a bit younger,” Tomic told ATPWorldTour.com at The Queen’s Club. “If I had waited for a longer period, until I hit the age of 24, 25, I would have waited much more time for it to heal with the rehab. Might as well do it at the age of 21, when the recovery stage is much quicker, as opposed to doing it later down the track.

“You either have it or you don’t, these hip issues,” continued the right-hander. “If you’re not a sportsman, it’s tough to figure out if you’ve got it or not. In the sport of tennis, where you’re moving so much physically, you’re going to feel it over time. I felt like I needed to do it to get a much better improvement in my range in my hips and lower back. I managed to do it, so I’m very happy.”

Grass has proved to be a happy hunting ground for Tomic. He reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon as an 18-year-old qualifier in 2011, recording his first Top 10 win over then-No. 5 Robin Soderling before his run came to an end in four sets against eventual champion Novak Djokovic. Last year, he beat No. 9-ranked Richard Gasquet to reach the fourth round at The Championships.

Tomic“It’s good to get on grass,” admitted Tomic. “It’s a relief because clay is difficult for me. [Queen’s is] my first tournament on grass with the hips. You’ve got to react differently, feel the court differently and that’s what I’m trying to do. Some people go four or five months getting their timing and feel back after surgery. I’m happy I started in the last month. I won a match, managed to lose a few, some pretty tight ones. It’s good to get a win here on the grass.

“[My body] felt good. It’s different tennis because the balls are shooting through low and you’ve got to react quicker. So I’ve got to get used to that, especially in the next week, leading on to the next few tournaments and Wimbledon.”

After what he hopes will be a fruitful run at The Queen’s Club, Tomic expects to build on his confidence levels on his return to the All England Club in two weeks’ time.

“Absolutely [Wimbledon will give me confidence]. You take [past results in] when playing on grass. I need a lot of confidence now, especially with the surgeries I’ve had in the past four months. Confidence is the key for me now. I have to get another match under my belt [at Queen’s] to feel a little bit more confident. It will do me a lot of good if I can win this next match.”

While undergoing rehab and making a tentative return to the ATP World Tour in the spring, Tomic has watched on as Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic entered the Top 10, and Grigor Dimitrov built on his run to the Australian Open quarter-finals. It has served as added motivation for Tomic, who hopes he can rise back up and improve on his career-high Emirates ATP Rankings position of World No. 27.

“I think Grigor did very well the last six months. He managed to break inside the Top 20, which has been good. He’s always had it in him, same as Raonic. I think [Raonic has] held it a little bit longer, for the past two and a half years inside the Top 20,” commented Tomic.

“I’ve been close. I’ve managed to be between No. 27 and No. 35 for a while. I want to be inside the Top 20 and I need to focus. Especially getting back from the surgery is difficult for me. This year I’ll use getting back as high as I can. I missed three months and it’s not easy to catch those points. These next six to seven months will hopefully boost me back into the Top 40, which would be good.”

Australian wild card Bernard Tomic made a winning debut at the Claro Open Colombia, as he defeated Uzbekistsan’s Farrukh Dustov 6-3, 6-3 on Monday in Bogota.

Tomic, who made second-round exits at three grass-court tournaments over the past month, recorded his first win on hard courts since January, when he reached the Sydney final (l. to del Potro). The 21 year old had been sidelined for two months following the Australian Open, requiring double hip surgery.

Against the 140th-ranked Dustov, he fired 10 aces and dropped nine points on serve, while converting three of his four break point chances. Tomic awaits the winner between fifth-seeded Colombian and 2013 finalist Alejandro Falla and Japan’s Tatsuma Ito.

American Alex Kuznetsov set a second-round meeting with No. 3 seed Vasek Pospisil after beating Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 7-6(3). Pospisil will be making his first appearance since winning the Wimbledon doubles title with Jack Sock.

Argentine Guido Pella, meanwhile, posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Colombian wild card Eduardo Struvay in 63 minutes and will play fourth seed Radek Stepanek in the second round.

Qualifying action concluded Monday, with Great Britain’s James Ward, Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero, Colombian Nicolas Barrientos and American Kevin King securing their places in the main draw.

In the lone doubles match Monday, Thai twins Sanchai Ratiwatana and Sonchat Ratiwatana edged Dudi Sela and Jimmy Wang 6-7(4), 7-5, 10-8.

Bernard Tomic took a significant step forward in his comeback campaign on the ATP World Tour, toppling defending champion Ivo Karlovic for the Claro Open Colombia title on Sunday.

Tomic prevailed 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(4) in two hours and 13 minutes for his second tour-level title, adding to a 2013 triumph at the Apia Sydney International (d. Anderson). The 21 year old completed a strong week in Bogota, winning consecutive matches for the first time since undergoing double hip surgery in late January.

The World No. 124 became the third player outside the Top 100 in the Emirates ATP Rankings to win a title this year, joining last week’s Bastad champion Pablo Cuevas and Munich titlist Martin Klizan. Both were ranked No. 111. In addition, Tomic is the first Australian champion in South America since Ken Rosewall triumphed in Buenos Aires in 1968.

Tomic overcame a serving barrage from Karlovic, who hammered 39 aces, just five shy of his three-set record established earlier this year in Zagreb. The young Aussie needed four championship points to put away the 6’11” Croat, who refused to be broken when facing a pair at 6-5 in the deciding set, and another in the ensuing tie-break. Tomic would hold his nerve on his fourth, catching a net-charging Karlovic out of position with a perfectly placed low dipping return to his feet.

"He's a very difficult player," said Tomic about Karlovic. "He won here last year. For me it was a difficult match. I kept trying and believing in myself. Against him, if you stop believing and trying he will beat you.

"It's my first tournament on hard courts since my surgeries in Australia. This title is huge and it's one I will always remember."

The former World No. 27 fired 11 aces of his own, winning 79 per cent of first serve points and saving four of five break points faced. He joined doubles champions Sam Groth and Chris Guccione as Australian titlists in Bogota this week, improving to 4-0 in hard-court three-setters this year. Tomic, who received $120,270 and 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points for his efforts, will break back into the Top 100 with the title.

Karlovic, meanwhile, suffered his first defeat in the Colombian capital, ending an eight-match win streak. The 35 year old was seeking to become the oldest tour-level titlist this year and 11th over-30 champion. He falls to 5-7 in finals on the ATP World Tour, dropping his fourth straight in 2014.

"It is difficult when you lose like this," said Karlovic. "I had a lot of opportunities in the beginning. All in all it was a great week. I was in the final again and I can only be happy. I really like the conditions here and hopefully I will be back next year."

Q. Is it the flu?

BERNARD TOMIC: Not really. I mean, I was sick for the last 10 days. It was difficult having the flu, but my hip's a little bit not in shape. I'm feeling it inside. So I did the best thing not to play. You know, I don't want to muck around with that area. For sure something is there. I've got to get it checked. Got to get it analyzed the next few days. I've got to look into it and see what's wrong, because I'm definitely feeling something in that area. For me, it's not good right now. It's painful.

Q. When did it flare up again? Was it during the first-round match?

BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, it was in the first-round match in the doubles against Nick, as well. You know, I can't afford to get on court and, you know, play against David and cause much more pain to myself, because, you know, I'm going to have to stay with him the whole match. For me right now I cannot do that. Who knows? I can potentially make it ten times worse. For me it's the best thing not to go on court today. It's a very difficult decision for me, but I have to do this, you know.

Q. How much is it to do with the hard courts, do you think?

BERNARD TOMIC: Well, I don't know. That's the thing. I've got to get it looked at. Good question, because I only started playing on hard court in Bogota after Wimbledon. That was my first sort of tournament on hard court from those two surgeries. I managed to win that. I have played a few good tournaments after that: Washington, Toronto, Cincinnati. Here I played pretty good in the first round. It's just unfortunate that this is happening like this. But it's tennis. It's life. You're going to get things like this.

Q. Bother you the whole year or just come on the last...

BERNARD TOMIC: Just the last few days since the first-round match. It's just something that I don't want to get on court with a player like David and have in the back and potentially cause a lot more problems to myself. I have to go get this checked now and see the next few days how it is, and, yeah, then decide what I have to do from there.

Q. How much of not wanting to go out there and maybe give it a go is knowing that David is a player you're going to play a lot of long points against and not someone you can standstill and beat out there?

BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah. That's what I had in the back of my head today. Good question. It's something that I thought about a lot. But I needed to go out against David today and be 100% on my game. I was playing good the last month. Was playing very good tennis. But it's unfortunate now. There is nothing I can do. I've got to look into it and see what this problem is. Hopefully I can arrange it and it can go away soon, yeah.

Q. Same part of your hip you had the surgery on?

BERNARD TOMIC: No, it's a different area. That's all I can sort of say now. I'll get it seen with a specialist, so I get their ideas and I'll decide what's the best idea.

Q. Where would you go? Go to Florida? Miami? Monte Carlo? Back to Australia?

BERNARD TOMIC: I don't know yet. I have to decide now in the next, you know, 24 hours. It's not easy because of Davis Cup. I really don't know. I have to decide. So I have to find that out in the next 24 hours. This. Is not an easy decision, so I have to look into that and talk with my father and obviously just come up with the best solution. For sure my biggest priority is to get this hip checked and see what the cause is and what problem it is. Then after that I can look into whether I can, you know, go down to Australia for the event in Perth for the Davis Cup. But until then, I have to find out what I'm doing.

Sydney flashback: Tomic’s title

Since moving to Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre in 2000, Apia International Sydney has been a happy hunting ground for Australians. In our “Sydney flashback” series, we will reflect on some of most memorable performances by our home-grown heroes in the lead up to the 2015 tournament. Today we feature Bernard Tomic’s maiden ATP title in Sydney in 2013, and his impressive performance to return to the final 12 months later.

Bernard Tomic has long been known for producing his best tennis on home soil.

And nowhere Down Under has he been more potent than when playing the Apia International Sydney.

Tomic was the story of the 2013 summer in Australia, winning in Sydney for his first career ATP final and becoming the first home-grown champion at the event in eight years.


“(I) couldn’t ask for anything more. It’s an amazing feeling. Now that I know what it feels like to win a tournament, and it’s the best feeling in the world,” he said after defeating South African Kevin Anderson 6-3 6-7(2) 6-3 in an absorbing final before an atmospheric crowd on Ken Rosewall Arena.

“I’m so happy I won. To do it here in Sydney, it’s awesome. I can’t ask for anything better. I’m so proud of myself. Can’t stop here now. Now I’ve got to look to the next tournament and keep playing the tennis I’ve been playing.”

Indeed, Tomic next travelled to Melbourne and enjoyed a third-round finish at the Australian Open. His Sydney triumph formed part of a sparkling 10-match winning streak to open the 2013 season – beginning with three wins at the Hopman Cup, he then scored five en court to the Sydney crown and another two at Melbourne Park before the great Roger Federer brought his winning ways to an end.

Tomic upended a succession of top 50-ranked opponents to win the Apia International title that year. Ranked No.64 himself, he ousted compatriot Marinko Matosevic, Florian Mayer, former Sydney champion Jarkko Nieminen and Andreas Seppi, all for the loss of just one set.

The tall, powerful Anderson, then ranked 36th and now in the top 20, proved a tough adversary for Tomic as the then 20-year-old made his ATP finals debut.

“He was serving amazing tonight. I couldn’t pick it. There is a reason why he’s won a few titles and been consistently in the top 30 and 40 the last few years and he’s beaten top-five players before,” Tomic said at the time.

“He’s not easy to play. I was lucky I got that double fault in the third set, because anything could have happened after that. I did play well off the ground. I served pretty good, but he was serving outstanding. So for me to get that break in the third set was huge, and I’m happy I closed it out.”

Perhaps even more impressively, Tomic returned to the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre 12 months later and picked up right where he left off, storming to his second consecutive final and looking particularly impressive in his straight-sets dismantling of the talented Alexandr Dolgopolov in the quarterfinals.

“Pressure is not a lot for me. I can handle that. I think to be a good player you need to handle pressure. Obviously I was defending here. I managed to get back to the final. Now I’m aiming for my second title, which is a huge feeling for me,” he said after beating Sergiy Stakhovsky in a sapping three-set semifinal.

Although top seed Juan Martin del Potro was too strong for Tomic in final, it was a remarkable effort for the young Aussie to reproduce his solid Sydney form of 2013 and in the process build a nine-match winning streak in the Harbour City.

“It was a very different feeling in a final,” Tomic said of playing in front of a sold-out crowd of 10,200.

“I’m happy they were lifting me up and they were on my side. It’s amazing playing in a crowd like in this Australia. It’s not every day in every tournament you get the chance to have crowd like this supporting you.”
