LONDON—Milos Raonic, who pulled out of his final round-robin match against Kei Nishikori at the ATP World Tour Finals, says his leg injury could be significant. The Canadian said he became hurt when he was playing against Andy Murray on Tuesday, a match Raonic lost 6-3, 7-5.

“Through extensive sort of research with the doctor's team here, we found that I have a slight tear on the vastus medialis on my quad,” Raonic said. “Just a large area of swelling, about five centimeters long, three centimeters wide, and one centimeter deep of swelling and bleeding.”

Raonic said he thought that he was cramping against Murray, and that it did not affect him. However, he was not able to run as fast as he could.

The world No. 8 says that pulling out of the exclusive tournament was the right move. He did not want the injury to get any worse and potentially lose training time during the off-season in November and December.

“If I was to step out on court, I'd sort of be walking a tightrope where I can play obviously not at 100 percent, but with a significant risk of losing up to six to eight weeks if things go badly,” he said.

“So losing six to eight weeks of solely rehab, sort of means you lose 12 weeks of getting back into shape and everything, those are definitely significant factors in my decision. At some points I didn't want to accept it and listen to it. But it is what it is. I, alongside my team, all the staff with the ATP, made the best decision I believe.”

Milos Raonic enjoyed a career year in 2014, rising to No. 6 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, and reaching a first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon and second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final in Paris. His season would culminate with a first appearance at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

Raonic was recognised for his impressive campaign on Friday, winning the Lionel Conacher Award for the second straight year. The honour is awarded annually to the Canadian Press male athlete of the year.

The 6'5" right-hander found great success in London, becoming the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam singles semi-final in the Open Era at the All England Club and the first to qualify for the season finale at The O2 in November.

"I did achieve the goals that I specified but I always have this yearning for more, more, more," Raonic said. "It doesn't matter how much I do, I always want more — especially when it comes to my tennis.

"It's hard as an athlete to really be playing your best throughout the whole year and I was able to consistently play well in the big tournaments."

Raonic finished with 29 of the 82 votes (35 per cent) in balloting of sports editors and broadcasters across the country. Ice hockey player Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings was second with 19 votes (23 per cent).

Doughty won Olympic hockey gold at the Sochi Games and added a Stanley Cup title with the Kings a few months later. Freestyle skier Alex Bilodeau, who successfully defended his Olympic title in men's moguls, was third with 14 votes (17 per cent).

Raonic is the only tennis player to win the award, which dates back to 1932.

2015 Preview: ATP No. 8, Milos Raonic

If you want a definition of incremental improvement, look no further than Milos Raonic. The male leader of the Canadian tennis boom has added one upgrade after another to an already potent game, slowly working his way to the career-high ranking of No. 6 he hit last July. But that wasn’t his true apex, despite what the ATP computer spit out. That came in October in Bercy, when he faced Roger Federer. Needing a win to reach the World Tour Finals, Raonic crafted a straight-sets triumph over the world No. 2, who himself needed the win to maintain a realistic shot of ending the year at No. 1.

Whether Raonic can reach such heights remains to be seen, but he’s trending upward. Demonstrating consistency on all surfaces—a tribute to an increasingly judicious use of his booming serve and vicious inside-out forehand—Raonic has improved his movement and also shored up his backhand, no longer leery of using it to go down the line.

Best Case Scenario
There’s really nowhere left for Raonic to go other than up on the dais where they present the winner and runner-up trophies. Despite his outstanding consistency, he still has some trouble closing the deal at tournaments, but his performance in the majors suggests he’s becoming accustomed to life near, if not at, the top.

Worst Case Scenario
Although the sleeve Raonic wears is precautionary, the care he takes to keep that arm warm and live underscores the degree to which he relies on his massive serve. Raonic was one of only two men to crack over 1,000 aces in 2014. If his serving efficiency diminishes, his entire game will suffer.

Bottom Line
Raonic’s coaches, Ivan Ljubicic and Riccardo Piatti, have done excellent work in turning a sometimes gentle giant into an aggressive one. With a little more confidence and perhaps a bit more work on his backhand and return, Raonic could join the Grand Slam champion’s club.

RAONIC FIGHTS PAST NISHIKORI TO REACH BRISBANE FINAL

The last two times Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic met, their matches were split a hair. Saturday’s semi-final at the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp followed the trend.

After two hours and 33 minutes of high-quality tennis, during which neither player dropped serve, two points separated the pair and the third-seeded Raonic proved victorious, prevailing 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 7-6(4) over the No. 2 seed.

Raonic will face Roger Federer in Sunday's final and will look to deny the Swiss his 1000th match win. The Canadian got his first win over Federer at last November's BNP Paribas Masters, but trails the Swiss 1-7 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head.

"I've got to serve well," said Raonic. "That's always been a key. The last few matches I started poorly. So I got to keep that pressure on him and then sort of step up when I can create my opportunities. I think that's a good place to start."

Raonic, 24, defeated the 25-year-old Nishikori for just the second time in six FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings, and avenged his most recent losses in their emerging young gun rivalry. Nishikori had won one more point than Raonic in the Tokyo final and six more in their four hour, 19-minute marathon in the US Open Round of 16.

On Saturday afternoon, the World No. 6 looked in danger of his third straight defeat to his Japanese rival, but extended the match by winning the final three points of the second set tie-break. After saving a break point in the opening game of the third set, Raonic went on to claim his second straight win in a decisive tie-break (d. Groth in QF), helped largely by his 34 aces.

Both players won 77 per cent of their service points and saved all three break points faced on serve.

"I felt like we both played really well. The level of tennis was very high, especially starting the year off," said Raonic. "I felt I served really well. That kept me in it, especially in the beginning, because I felt he was getting more and more on top of me at the beginning from the baseline.

"That gave me a chance, and then I was able to create some opportunities in the beginning of the second. After that, it was pretty much straightforward holding from both of us. I felt like with my serve I put a lot of pressure on opponents in tie-breaks, and I was able to use that."

Raonic advances to his 14th ATP World Tour final (6-7 record), and his first since a runner-up finish at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris last November (l. to Djokovic).

World No. 5 Nishikori bowed out in the Brisbane semi-finals for a third consecutive year.

"I think he played really well; good serve," said Nishikori, who will play the doubles final on Sunday alongside Alexandr Dolgopolov. "There was not much I could do. I was playing okay. Lots of good serves.
There were no breaks. There was I think only a few points in the tie-break that I should have done better. He took some risks in the tie-breaks hitting good serves, good second serves. I think it was good start of the year for me."

Brisbane Performance Gives Raonic “Belief”

Following a breakthrough season that saw him finish the in the Top 10 for the first time in his career, Milos Raonic entered 2015 as an established threat. Would the 24-year old be able to handle the pressure of expectation?

Raonic’s performance at the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp left no doubt that he is up for the challenge. Despite becoming a victim of Roger Federer’s 1,000th ATP World Tour victory, falling 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-4 in a landmark final for the Swiss, the World No. 8 could not have hoped for a much stronger start to his season.

“I think it just shows the development I've been able to make over the last little while,” Raonic said, acknowledging that his mental progress has been just as important as the physical. “You put me in that same situation few months and weeks ago, and I think I could be out of that stadium pretty quickly.”

En route to his 14th career final, Raonic led the tournament with 66 aces, his serve broken just once in 44 games. He also avenged his heartbreaking five-set loss to Kei Nishikori in the US Open quarter-finals, toppling the World No. 5 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 7-6(4) in the Brisbane semi-finals. He hopes that confidence boost will pay dividends heading into the first Grand Slam of the year.

“In 2012, I believe I started the year winning Chennai. It was a great feeling, but I didn't feel like I was producing the same level,” Raonic admitted. “I didn't feel like I was going into the Australian Open with the same confidence and belief that I can really make something big happen there.”

After reflecting on his 1,000th career victory following the match, Federer had positive things to say about the Canadian’s progress and future potential. Nine years Federer’s junior, Raonic has won more titles than any other player born in the 1990s (6).

“I think he's definitely changed his way of playing since he started working with Riccardo [Piatti] and Ivan [Ljubicic],” Federer observed. “I think it's interesting to see him adapting and changing to that coaching staff.

“He's going to have a good year. He's already had a very consistent season this year, but I think he'll probably step it up a bit.”

Though disappointed with the loss, Raonic appreciated being part of Federer’s historic moment. During his post-match acceptance speech, he joked that with all Federer has accomplished, it’s hard to believe he’s not celebrating 2,000 wins.

“It's great to see everything he's done for tennis. The fans he's brought; the media attention he's brought. If he is if not one of the most popular athletes now in the world, he's definitely the most popular tennis player of all time.”

RAONIC HOPEFUL OF MENTAL EDGE IN MELBOURNE

Milos Raonic made his Grand Slam breakthrough when he reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon last year and, after an off-season in which the impetus was largely on his mental game, the Canadian hopes that if he finds himself in the same position in Melbourne during the next fortnight, he will be able to go even further.

The 24-year-old Raonic was part of the ATP’s training camp in Monte-Carlo in December and, as well as a lot of work on his fitness, spent time discussing mental intricacies with his coaches, Ivan Ljubicic and Riccardo Piatti.

“We spent a lot of time, through discussion, working on the mental side of things, how I want to deal with things, especially at important moments against top players,” said Raonic, who was felled in three sets by Roger Federer in the final four at the All England Club last July. “All these kind of things. We had about three and a half weeks to really sort of just buckle down and put in the work.

“[I’ve been working] with the team, with Ivan, with Riccardo, everybody around, just to sort of deal a bit better with specific moments, especially when it gets to the crunch time against the top players. Just finding ways to sort of maximise myself better, so I don't get caught up in the wrong things. I'm making sure I'm focusing on the right stuff.”

The work Raonic put in in December was certainly evident in the first week of the 2015 season at the Brisbane International, where he edged Kei Nishikori in an almighty tussle in the semi-finals before losing a close contest against Federer in the final.

Having seen Nishikori reach the final at the US Open last September (l. to Cilic), Raonic believes it could be the turn of the younger generation this season to step up and make their mark at the majors.

“I think we can step up and give ourselves a possibility to win at the bigger tournaments. I don't think there's going to be somebody stepping up like Roger, Rafa and Novak did a few times, winning three out of four slams. But I think there will be an opportunity for one of us to step up and have an opportunity to win their first slam.”

Raonic is set to make his fifth main draw appearance at Melbourne Park and will open his campaign on Tuesday against Illya Marchenko. Five years ago, he burst onto the scene at the Australian Open, coming through qualifying to reach the fourth round before his run was ended in four sets by David Ferrer. He also reached the last 16 in 2013 (l. to Federer) and last year lost a close third-round contest against Grigor Dimitrov. His previous performances Down Under give the Toronto native added confidence.

“For me it has that nostalgic feeling. I've always played well here. I've really enjoyed it. I've enjoyed the atmosphere. I've enjoyed the opportunities I have. I want to just keep building on that.”

Raonic Makes Canadian History In Melbourne

Milos Raonic became the first Canadian man in the Open Era to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals on Monday as he edged Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-3 on Australia Day in Melbourne.

The Toronto native is the first Canadian into the last eight in Melbourne since Michael Belkin in 1968, when the event was played in January. He is through to his third Grand Slam quarter-final, having made his breakthrough at Roland Garros last year (l. to Djokovic) and going on to reach his first semi-final a month later at Wimbledon (l. to Federer).

He is also the second Canadian man in history to reach three major quarter-finals, following in the footsteps of Robert Powell at Wimbledon in 1908, ’10 and ’12.

"It's great to be doing what I'm doing and that it is making a difference," said Raonic. "It is, I guess, part of some history, if you look really deep. But at the end of the day, at the same time, I'm always pushing myself for what I want to achieve. I'm always sort of looking in the mirror and saying, 'That's who I have to compare myself to: to myself.'"

The 24-year-old Raonic will face World No. 1 and four-time champion Novak Djokovic for a place in the semi-finals.

Raonic had lost his last match with Lopez, in Toronto last year, and was pushed all the way on Hisense Arena by the 33-year-old Spaniard, who just does not know when he is beaten.

Leading 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, Raonic looked to have the match on his racquet in the fourth set tie-break. He was denied his first match point on Lopez’s serve at 5-6, but then had the chance to close out the match on his own serve at 7-6. Lopez came up with a telling pass, though, and Raonic then hooked a forehand wide to give the Spaniard his first set point, which he duly converted.

With Lopez having saved three match points in a grueling five-set win over Denis Kudla last week, the Madrid native looked set for more heroics against Raonic. But it was not to be another great escape.

Serving at 3-4, Lopez – the only player who was still in singles and doubles (w/ Max Mirnyi) – crucially double faulted when facing break point. Raonic afforded him no more opportunities. Three aces gave the Canadian three more match points in the ninth game and he made no mistake as he forced a backhand error from Lopez after three hours and five minutes.

"I thought it was okay," said Raonic. "I'm happy with sort of the attitude that got me through. I stayed calm even though things weren't always panning out how I would have liked. I came up with the right play on my first match point. He came up with a great shot. Missed a lot of break point opportunities, but overall I can't complain too much. I fought my way through."

"When the match went to a fifth set, you always have a chance," said Lopez. "After winning the fourth set, the match was so close. I think I made a great effort in that tie-break when I was match point down, hitting a couple of good shots at that moment. But the fifth set, silly break that I got, and it was over. He wasn't going to give me one break at that time. Looking back, I have to be happy because I was already out in the first round and I managed somehow to be in the fourth round and managed to play a good match against Milos."

MILOS RAONIC FOUNDATION CONTRIBUTES $30,000 GRANT TO CANADIAN PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE

The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) is honoured and grateful to announce it is a recipient of a $30,000 grant from the Milos Raonic Foundation, to help more children with disabilities become involved in sports.

The funds will be directed towards the creation of an innovative CPC parasport digital online resource. The resource will help Canadian parents, professionals from health, education, sport and recreation access activity and lesson plans and providers based on location, age, disability type and sport preferences, to enhance the integration of children with a disability into existing sports programming.

The Milos Raonic Foundation harnesses resources in support of disadvantaged children and was established in 2012 by the Canadian tennis star.

“The Canadian Paralympic Committee would like to thank Milos Raonic and his Foundation for this very timely and generous grant,” said Karen O’Neill, CEO of the Canadian Paralympic Committee. “The development of this online resource has the potential to significantly elevate the level of awareness of opportunities in sport and impact thousands of children across Canada.”

Raonic recently won the Lionel Conacher Award for the second year in a row as Canada’s male athlete of the year. In 2014 at Wimbledon, he became the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam men’s singles semifinal. Raonic is the highest ranked Canadian male player in the open era.

The Milos Raonic Foundation’s mandate is to support initiatives intended to reduce economic, physical and other barriers that might prevent the full integration of all children in the lives of their communities.

“We are very pleased to provide this grant to the Canadian Paralympic Committee and to help make possible more participation in parasport,” said Raonic. “This is an exciting opportunity to positively impact the lives of Canadian children with a disability by providing a more direct route to help them reach their full potential.”
