Milos Raonic is Back Playing Tennis Again

After undergoing hip surgery on July 5, Milos Raonic has returned to the tennis hopeful of playing the US Open.

Raonic injured his hip in a freak fall early in a second round Wimbledon match against Gilles Muller. The Canadian with the booming serve was keen on playing his home tournament in Montreal, but according to a report from the Toronto Globe and Mail that’s unlikely.

Raonic has been busy with rehab, training in the pool and earlier this week he began hitting again on the tennis courts.

“It’s certainly a different type of work,” Raonic told the Globe and Mail. “I wish I could be playing for eight hours a day instead of rehabbing. It’s a different type of work, but it needs to be done.”

The 6′4″ 20-year-old Raonic has been at the forefront of the new stars in tennis. He currently ranks No. 27 on the ATP computer and if healthy would have been a major obstacle this summer on the hardcourts.

Catching up with Milos Raonic

Beginning the year ranked No. 156 in the world, young Canadian star Milos Raonic has seen his ranking skyrocket to a current position of No. 29 on the ATP World Tour. Ranked as high as No. 25 in May of this year, Raonic is currently recovering from a hip injury he sustained at Wimbledon.
In the following interview, the intelligent and articulate 20-year-old discusses the current state of his injury; when he intends on returning to action; who he believes will be the best player of the current group and up-and-comers, and finally which players have the best strokes on Tour.

Q) Just getting straight into it here, how has your summer been barring your recent hip injury?
A) It’s been good, it’s been heavy. People think we get injured and we relax but it’s the opposite. It’s about eight hours of rehab a day, six days a week. It’s actually more tiring than being on Tour playing. I’m happy with my progress and how things are going.

Q) Do you have a ballpark figure of when you’re looking to return?
A) Well hopefully the US Open. The thing with injuries are that it really comes down to week-to-week. Right now I’m making some great strides with it. I’ve had two on-court training sessions and things are going very well and ahead of schedule. I don’t want to comeback at 90 percent or 95 percent, I want to comeback at 100 percent and have this injury finished with and behind me.

Q) How do you deal with the pressure filled situations in matches?
A) Oh, the thing is here that you have to believe, and it’s not always easy to believe. You have to, in those situations go with the things that you know best. Go with the patterns that you know best, not something out of the blue. Sometimes people get caught up and down on their game and go with something that they’re not used to, and their chances of succeeding in pressure [situations] drops.

Q) How has your life changed since your rise up the rankings this year? Is your life significantly different than a year ago?
A) Sure, a lot has changed since last year. There are a lot more perks in my life, a lot of things I can enjoy more. Now I get invited to go to different performances all the time, and to different concerts. For example, Drake is playing here in Toronto tonight, and I called this morning because I didn’t have a ticket and I got one. But the most important thing is walking around and people coming up to me and saying hi or asking about my injury. The support is great.

Q) When you play, are you playing for Milos or are you playing for Canada? Can you talk about how Tennis Canada has helped elevate your status to where it is today?
I think one of the reasons that I’m able to deal quite well with the pressure is because when I’m competing or down I’m really playing for myself. I’m not wondering what others are thinking about. I love the outside support, I love the game, and at the end of the day if I win or a lose, I can only blame myself. Tennis Canada has been a big part of it. I think they have one of the better systems worldwide. It takes time for kids to believe that they can be at the top. I’m willing to be a big part of that. Kids need to want to be there like they believe they can in Hockey.

Q) What changes are looking to make in your game in order to increase your ranking?
A) Improving my returns. If you look at what Novak Djokovic does with his return it’s incredible. Having a chance to hit with him, he gets his racket on every ball. Even if it’s a floater return, he puts pressure on the guy to play another ball. You want to be able to neutralize your opponent and make them hit another ball, and dictate on the next shot.

Q) You’ve been put into this group of up and coming players with Ryan Harrison, Grigor Dimitrov, Richard Berankis and Bernard Tomic. Which player in your opinion will have the best career? With all things being equal, and you’re all in the top 10 and battling for Grand Slams, which player will give you the most trouble?
A) Wow, well I hope myself. In terms of potential I would have to say Grigor. But I think mentally out of the group I would have to say Ryan is the best competitor. It’s going to come down to who can work through their weaknesses and improve. But I think if you get into two guys, Ryan has the best competitor in him and Grigor has the most potential.

Q) For our last question, could you provide one player who you think has the best serve, forehand, backhand, movement and who is the best competitor on Tour?
A) Serve: Ivo Karlovic, but in terms of [service] games I would say Roger Federer.
A) Forehand: Federer.
A) Backhand: Djokovic.
A) Movement: Djokovic.
A) Competitor: Nadal, by a long stride.

Milos Raonic to miss U.S. Open

Canadian tennis star Milos Raonic will not participate in the final Grand Slam of the season - the U.S. Open, which starts next week in New York.

The Thornhill, Ont., native continues to recover from hip surgery, which he had early last month in Colorado.

Raonic released the news on his Twitter account: “After extensive deliberation with my doctors + team, I have decided to delay my tournament return until after the US Open.”

The hard-serving Raonic, currently ranked No. 29 in the ATP ratings, originally injured his hip during a second-round match at Wimbledon.

Raonic needs more recovery time after Davis try ends early

Obrazek

Raonic needs more recovery time after Davis try ends early Canadian Milos Raonic has returned to his training base in Barcelona and won't make an ATP return as planned indoors in Metz, France, next week after being forced with withdraw prior to a Davis Cup singles match in Israel.

While Canada won the weekend 3-2 and will return to the World Group for the first time in seven years, the news is not great for the 31st-ranked Raonic.

The player who injured his hip in a slide on the Wimbledon grass in the second round and then underwent surgery, tried and failed to make a solid return to competition. His only match since his injury was a losing singles rubber at the weekend in Israel before withdrawing.

"The hip is completely fine. It's more like everything else has taken a toll on me," the 20-year-old told Canadian media. "I"m feeling dizziness, almost like a migraine. I feel uncoordinated."

The impatient player is keen to get back on court but knows he cannot rush his healing and rebuilding. "It's like all these little problems now seem so big. I get a little sick, and it seems to make such a big difference. I'm feeling a little slow out there, and suddenly it feels like I can't think the game as I play."

Raonic is now hoping to start playing again in October indoors at the Kuala Lumpur ATP stop.

The player was able to start hitting balls last month instead of going through the more standard waiting period of up to five months and at one time had considered entering the US Open, a plan which didn't work out.

Raonic ready to return to tournament play

TORONTO - It appears that Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., will be returning to tournament tennis next week at the Japan Open in Tokyo.

Currently in Barcelona, Raonic tweeted Thursday, "off to Tokyo tomorrow, I look forward to going back there its amazing, as well as playing competitively again."

A year ago at the same event, he qualified and reached the second round before losing 6-4, 6-4 to then world No. 1 Rafael Nadal.

Raonic, who played and lost an opening-day Davis Cup singles match in Ramat Hasharon, Israel, two weeks ago, has not competed on the ATP World Tour since injuring his right hip in a fall at the beginning of a second-round match at Wimbledon on June 22.

He had surgery on the hip on July 5 in Vail, Colo.

Currently ranked No. 30, he will join headliners Nadal and Andy Murray in the 32-player field at the US $1.2-million tournament in Tokyo.

The following week, he is scheduled to play the $3.24-million Shanghai Rolex Masters in China, the eighth of the nine ATP Masters 1000 events for 2011.

Raonic back where it all began

Obrazek
“Woody Woodpecker” hits Tokyo

Top Canadian Milos Raonic has landed, and is finally ready to take up the ATP Tour where he left off, which was in pain on the grass at Wimbledon last June.

In a way, it’s a perfect full circle. Asia (specifically the Kuala Lumpur event, which is taking place this week) was where Raonic began working with coach Galo Blanco, exactly a year ago. The transition began from former coach Fred Niemeyer, who wanted to travel less and has since worked a similar kind of magic with another young Canadian, Vasek Pospisil.

(The photo above right is from Blanco, the nickname as well. The Spanish equivalent, hilariously enough, is “Crazy Bird”).

The Asian swing is where Raonic first made a breakthrough and started getting people’s attention.

When he arrived for the qualifying in Kuala Lumpur, Raonic was ranked No. 237 in the world. After qualifying for his first major at the U.S. Open (and losing to Carsten Ball in the first round in a lacklustre effort he said afterward would never happen again), the Ontario had just won his first Davis Cup match, a 9-7 in the fifth win over obscure Dominican Victor Estrella.

He did the job in Kuala Lumpur.
Obrazek

Then, he went to Tokyo, where he did the same thing, and got to face Rafael Nadal.
Obrazek

Raonic left Asia with a couple of nice paycheques, and a ranking of No. 155.

He wasn’t really able to capitalize, though, because of a shoulder injury that scuttled the rest of his 2010 campaign save for a couple of matches.

Raonic came back in January, and you know the rest.

He returns a year later ranked No. 30 in the world, after a pretty vigorous rehab following his July 5 hip surgery. Davis Cup was a non-starter, and Raonic pulled out of his planned participation in this week’s Kuala Lumpur event.

But even if it might help him to get a couple of extra matches in, Raonic won’t have to qualify.

Obrazek
Which one means “flush”?

Raonic will, however will have to start defending points, beginning right now. This whole year, until the injury, was pretty much onward and upward, all gravy.

And that is, as we always say at Open Court, where they separate the men from the boys.

Raonic was just edged out of the No. 8 seed (out-ranked by Nadal, Murray, Ferrer, Fish, Troicki, Tipsarevic, Stepanek and Monaco).

Monaco was lower-ranked at the cutoff date, but has since squeezed ahead of Raonic.

So the Canadian could have gotten fairly unlucky with the draw, especially with no first-round byes.

The good news is his first-round opponent will be wild card Yuichi Sugita. The bad news is that for the second straight year, Nadal could be waiting in the second round.

So far, Raonic is rather impressed (and probably a little befuddled) with Japanese technology.

IF STOCKHOLM OPEN 2011
Raonic Reach QFs

No. 6 seed Milos Raonic progressed to the last eight of an event for the fifth time in 2011 after beating Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 6-3. The Canadian, who won his first ATP World Tour title at the indoor event in San Jose (d. Verdasco) in February, fired seven aces and did not face a break point to advance past the German in one hour and 13 minutes. The win avenged a three-set loss to Petzschner in the Halle quarter-finals.

Raonic: I need to get players' respect back

Milos Raonic reaches his first semifinal since February when he takes down Grigor Dimitrov in Stockholm. Considered one of the ATP’s most promising young players after he won San Jose earlier in the year and reached the final of Memphis, the 20-year-old Canadian had hip surgery on July 5 after taking a fall at Wimbledon. The big server returned to play in mid-September and is currently ranked No. 29, but says his opponents no longer fear him. "One of the big things is having respect, and when you lose it, it’s hard to get it back," he told the Toronto Star. "If they smell blood, people in tennis are really hungry and out to expose it."

Raonic pleased with injury comeback despite loss

Obrazek

Canadian Milos Raonic is pleased with his tennis injury comeback progress despite missing a chance for a Stockholm Open final.

The big server, who underwent hip surgery in July after Wimbledon, lost a lead and paid the price in a three-set loss against Gael Monfils in Sweden.

"I had some sloppy mistakes," said 29th-ranked Raonic, who led a set and a break in the semi-final. "He's a top 10 player so he'll take those and run with them.

"Overall it's been a good week, it just came down to a few tight games that didn't go my way. I didn't manage them well, that's something I have to work on."

Raonic was competing in only his third tournament since his return this month in Asia. All three of his losses have come against the Top 10 elite.

He went down to Rafael Nadal in Tokyo, lost to David Ferrer in Shanghai and was beaten in Stockholm by Monfils, the No. 10 who is hoping to earn a place to next month's World Tour Finals in London.

"I'm making good progress," said Raonic. "I'm focusing on my serve, it's a big part of my game. I never expected to be playing this well so soon after coming back. I'm pretty happy with everything."

Bombardier z Kanady
Milos Raonić (Kanada, 20 lat, 29 ATP)

Zaczynał rok jako 156. tenisista świata. Potrzebował zaledwie sześciu tygodni by awansować na 37. lokatę! Jak na 20-letniego żółtodzioba z dalekiej Kanady - osiągnięcie bez precedensu.

Rodzice Raonicia pochodzą z Czarnogóry, tam też przyszedł na świat Milos. Do Kanady przybył z rodziną gdy miał 3 lata.

Raonic beats Sampras in exhibition
Canada's rising star Milos Raonic beat American tennis legend Pete Sampras 7-6 (4), 6-1 in an exhibition match at Air Canada Centre on Wednesday.

Raonic used his powerful serve to overpower the 14-time Grand Slam champion, who was playing his first match in Canada since retiring almost a decade ago.

"This kid's serve is bigger than big," Sampras said.

"I think I've watched him play a couple thousand hours more than he's watched me," Raonic said.

"I just hope that he takes it easy on me and respects the fact that I've won 14 more majors than [him]," Sampras said with a laugh.

"I saw him play a little bit over the last year and he possesses obviously a big serve, a big second serve," Sampras said. "But he can do a lot of different things. He can come in, he can stay back, he's got a good sense of the game.

"He can do everything, he's got a great future."

"When I look at a young kid, I look at a weapon," he said. "And when you can serve 135, 140 [miles per hour] on the line and really pick your spots, that's a pretty big weapon to have.

"He's on his way. He's very young, he's eager and he's got a great future."

"What Milos needs right now is experience," Sampras said. "He needs matches, he needs to get healthy and he needs to stay healthy."

"Don't expect him to win Wimbledon next year," he told reporters. "It's going to take some time. He can do it but let's be patient here. Let's not put too much pressure on the kid.

"He's got a great game, a great future and I wish him all the best."

"It's amazing to hear all these comments come from him because it means so much to me," Raonic said. "But I know at the end of the day, I know that no one is going to give me anything in the future.

"I'm going to have to keep working for it."

"When I retired, I took three or four years and I didn't play tennis, talk tennis, I wanted to get away from it," Sampras said. "I put on some weight, got lazy, got fat, the whole thing. Now that I'm back into it, it's nice and to play Milos is a big challenge."
